Looking cool. My type of games.
I really like to play historical battles and hope to see a good amount of historical battles in the final product.
No campaigns planned i guess (sequel of battles)?
Looks great. Any word on multiplayer or at least a way of context being added to each battle?
I'd hate for this to be a simple points based balance game. I'd like a scourge of war march to battle sort of game so battles were different every time.
I always found total war pure battles pretty passe without the campaign.
Will follow this game closely as it looks pretty good.
Thanks for posting. This looks great!
Agreed. Looks good. On my, "To Follow" list.
This looks pretty neat!
Hello, thanks for the interest. To answer a few questions:
No plan on multiplayer. I do like multiplayer competitive games, but it would massively complicate development for a very small percentage of the player base (perhaps less than 5% of field of glory 2, total war, etc...players regularly play multiplayer). For now, it is a tactical battles simulation against the AI, with a huge amount of the dev focus being on the intelligence of the AI.
As for campaigns, I may add some ability to string battles together with compounding losses, veterancy, etc...at some point, but there's no plan to add a turn based strategic layer for the initial release, although that may come much later as it's a natural extension, and is not as technically challenging to make as the battles. However, for now, the focus is all on the battles (both historical recreations and custom battles).
This looks really cool!

If only you could partner with a game like imperator rome that has a strategic layer with a heavy focus on supply and army status. But is missing a proper 3d battle layer.
No multiplayer is a big deal for me because even if I do not play the multiplayer element that is what I aspire to. Did you ever play total war arena? A lot of people mourn the loss of that game.
Also have you played manor lords battles, the thing that intrigued me about manor lords battles is that because it is a town militia each and every individual townsperson is represented. You could lose your town blacksmith in battle or your baker for example ehich would have a huge effect on your town functioning. This is the kind of thing that makes me care about a battle, that gives the battles a point.
Even without a reason to keep my troops alive and thus not cause phyric victories knowing it does not matter, I am still super keen to see how your game works out.
I have always wanted total war battles back and this looks like it could turn out to be what i imagined total war evolving into way back before I stopped playing it when rome2 came out. Total War basically gave up on the historical battle side of things and instead focussed on gamey cheese mechanics that turned battles into soul less statistical affairs where flags were moved around and the troops never seen.
Have you considered an army painter for this game. Maybe that would appeal to the miniature tabletop guys.
Will their be siege battles? I know total war has never really got siege warfare right. They went backwards actually, missing siege features rome1 had.
Is the game physics based or chance based?
Will their be modding to make the men and horse models less squat? I like 1/72 in real life because proportionally they tend to look less like sponge bob and more life like. However mediterranean types were fairly squat in this era so no problems here. Field of glory certainly has the same problem.
The video that inspired me to make this post.
Hey! Thanks for the engagement. Longer term, perhaps for a DLC, perhaps for a sequel, perhaps in partnership with someone else, perhaps on my own, it would be cool to have a dedicated turn-based and grid/map-based strategic or operational level of war to accompany the battles, but for now the focus is on tactics, ie pitched battles, across many different maps and modes. There will be some "campaigns" in the sense of related battles strung together for context, like an Alexander campaign, and dedicated on off historical battle reenactments, as well as custom battles, a bit like field of glory 2 on steam if you know that.
I did play multiplayer tw and field of glory, and quite a lot of tw arena when it was out, although it is notable that that game failed and was abandoned by CA, which is a much larger studio than me. I talk a bit about why no multiplayer in this thread on the steam forums:
https://steamcommunity.com/app/3064810/discussions/0/4628107478025994478/
I have played manor lords! but, that's basically a different game genre with small scale town/city-building with a town militia of a few dozen men with low level granular details like you've discussed, whereas Strategos is about major pitched battles with thousands, or even over ten thousand, of men, in large formations of hundreds each, with a concentration on a more abstract level of warfare (ie combats are resolved on the formation level like a tabletop game, like DBA).
Yes, TW battles being a bit more arcadey and fantasy now is a big motivation for this game's existence, ie to fill that void for historical, large scale formation tactics, including line shifting and terrain disorder, multiple morale levels and wild pursuits etc...
No sieges for now, as that is also basically like a distinct genre of game mechanically speaking (like you mention TW sieges are basically just field battles with a wall between the two armies, because that's what the engine can do as it's built around pitched battles, and I'd rather not do sieges at all if I can't do them justice, rather than do that kind of pseudo siege battle).
It is chance/rng/unit stats/poa etc...based like a tabletop game, similar to mechanics from the likes of field of glory. It is not a physics based battle system like mount and blade or some such, it is on a more abstract level than that. It's more like tabletop games scaled up and come to life (including in the art style).
I'm not opposed to people modding, but I haven't made special efforts to add modding either. We'll see what people come up with if there's interest in that I guess...
thanks again for your interest! and feel free to ask any other questions.
What an amazing answer. Thank you for the engagement. The game sounds awesome especially because you seem to have the background and experience of a seasoned veteran of the genre that cares a out what went wrong the current crop of wargames.
As for the tabletop look of the figures style. I don't mind the style, I just prefer a more realistic one, especially where horses are concerned. For me the idea is to bring tabletop to life and not to simply bring tabletop to the computer. Total war was doing that until they wete infiltrated by mad dungeons and dragons types that were not interested in realism. After that, everything realistic became too hard for them and any new battle features dried up. Not to mention any ability to see units and armies fight in a visually enjoyable manner.
Game looks great, it'll be on my steam wish list for sure. Imagine if field of glory empires could interface with this game instead of field of glory for tactical battles.
Congrats on picking up Microprose as a publisher. :twirl:
Holy crap that is cool!

Launch trailer
The game looks rather boring to me, the environments are dull or at least what we have been shown, the units are not that great looking just a step up from pixel art, and the sounds and immersion just don't do it for me. In all honesty this looks like a matrix/slitherine game built for the hard-core fans of this type. Hate to say it but unless I want more tactical battles there no reason I would not continue to play total war.

The self-centered nature of comments I see from TW players (or fans, but it is hard to describe today as a concept, as they seem to hate it as much as they love it more often than not) is quite impressive for it's all across the board.
You see little 3D guys fighting it out on a big map, it becomes a TW competitor. As a TW competitor, it is found lacking, so you decide to say out loud everywhere you guys go that you won't give up on TW for this one (or sometimes actually the other way around, with cries of "death to TW" punctuating the comments). You think it's all about you. It's mesmerizing to witness as a phenomenon, truly.
It only has tactical combat (no strategic map), it emphasizes command issues, it answers to tabletop rules (and that's why the little people look like tabletop soldiers), it is a 1:1 realtime expression of a Fields of Glory or DBA session. It's made so that we can finally play Issos or Raphia with the adequate number of soldiers on screen (something RTW could never do even in its best shape, because it's not meant to do that). TFA is closer from Carriers at War or Sea Power from CMO in game design than Strategos is to RTW or RTW2. Strategos is to RTW what Regiments is to Warno, literally.
Keep playing Total War, it's great! Place is big enough for us all to enjoy our own kind of antique warfare, no harm done.

I don't actually play a lot of total war, just was the closest comparison with Realtime battles. I am surprised slitherine did not pick this one up it totally fits their games. There will be an audience for this game, it will do all right but I don't think it's going to appeal to the casual strategy gamer and I suspect if they would add more progression elements, campaign (beyond the basic thing shown), or something with more immersion they would bring in more players.
They won't, not at this stage, like we won't do many things we're being asked to do either. Because features don't grow on trees, and team management and resources are a thing. And again, if it doesn't connect with you, you're not the audience, and it's perfectly fine
I don't expect game development to be transparent to everybody, but at some point there's some good sense involved. One guy can only code, model, design & implement so much, and a project has to be sized up according to where it comes from and how it got here.
It's always a gun and armor race. Mostly in the game industry the wheel is re-invented just with shinier wheels and often not even a full set of the older wheels capabilities. Because the older wheel was mature or from a time where longer gestation periods with more thought out elements for more cerebral audiences.
However. Strategos has some rare elements I am looking for like courier messengers and command delay. Those are things from scourge of war I really love. I have not seen it in an ancient game.
A friend of mine is excited for it as he looked at the phalanx animations and was impressed at the realism in the way they moved.
Strategos has some good elements. However a lot of us would have loved to see
It as a plugin for total war. Something getting towards a favourite game before we die.
Gamers more often or not do not simply look for nostalgia but progress ina given genre. Gamers don't have time or money to waste on repeats they csn still play with older games.
Publishers or development guys I would say look at what makes business sense and what makes money even if it is just a remake. No resources for more staff to make real strides.
Perhaps AI programming will allow humans to concentrate more on making huge innovations and realism improvements on past products.
Star Citizen is at least showing innovation can be achieved albiet with a huge budget, team and time issue.
Don't be too hard on customers that want something for their money. They cannot buy everything and mist assess a products worth.
I think it does have some interesting features that might be worth a look. I don't mind the graphics, as you will be playing from birds eye view most of the time. I think the real opportunity would be to set this thing up to connect to field of glory empires(or insert some other strategic level game that imports exports tactical battle details). I think it would be possible as the game comes with a map generator. Probably would involve some politics with matrix, but it would be really cool and would solve the campaign or lack there of questions. Most players want a context to why the tactical battle is being fought, it's why the total war series was so successful. It's why people love army general mode in steel division and warno.
Looks great - definite buy for me. Dont really get people who are supposed to love wargames being negative about another wargame.
I have seen it asked if the games courier system is the only way to order units around. What was meant by this is that the gentleman thought that an overall plan would have been agreed on a lot of the time before battle.
The pertinent question from me that comes from this very valid point is one of whether beginning stances and "qeued orders" a little like you would give in chain sequence from combat mission are in game as part of the deployment phase?
Another thing I would ask is whether there are more communication methods like trumpet, clarion, dipping of a banner etc as predetermined signals? I personally would not be unhappy if these are not in game and am just asking.
I take it we will not be getting stampedes with cattle that have fires lit on their horns? :P
So this would make me happy. slitherine decides to purchase this game and integrate it to field of Glory
Two birds one stone, everyone is happy
Vulcanhd just did a sponsored video on strategos. It was rather by the numbers and I can tell there was not much passion there for the game. But that is his MO.
Great to see one of my favourite youtubers playing something other than modern real time eugen style games.
Looking good to me!
Demo version is available

Intriguing system for sure, in tutorial got both my pikeman units broken but still managed to grab a win somehow. 🤣
Downloading now.
I see this is an updated demo which is good.
Quite a few excellent looking demo's out right now...
This, Master of Command and Heroes of the Olden Era......If this looks good too that will be 3 games I need to buy soon....I had been so restrained most of the year too
EDIT : Strategos is not for me sadly.
Camera controls are wonky and the UK to me is not clear.
Hope others like it.

I like strategos and think like master of command, it is a total war beater. But like Master of Command's campaign map, need at least some context to make me bother playing battles. Still it could be fun multiplayer.

Hello! Thanks for trying out the demo. Can you provide some more explicit feedback on why the camera controls are wonky and the UI unclear?
Is it the in-battle or main menu UI? The "worldspace" UI like banners and popups, or the "screenspace" UI like the buttons in the corners? Or the menu windows?
For the camera, is it the zoom or pivot or something else that is difficult to use?

Hi
I have uninstalled the demo now buy I am someone who doesnt like using WASD and likes to rely on the left/right mouse button and centre wheel to navigate and I think maybe that was the issue...I personally found zooming in and out and scrolling let and right with the mouse quite jerky but I am sure knowing me it was user error :uglystupid2:
Best of luck with the release either way.

Thanks for the feedback. There is an option in the settings to enable screen edge movement (pan on the edges and rotate in top corners), and click ground to move, and with middle mouse button + move mouse you can rotate/pivot the camera, and mouse3+click and drag you can pan as well (all rebindable, those are defaults). I've also added a quick fix to the zooming which had a bug in it in the early demo. I can emphasize these options more in the tutorial for people who don't like WASD. Let me know if you try it again.
Thanks
I just got finished playing the demo (with my beloved Romans) and enjoyed it. Very intuitive, especially if you have played Field of Glory II.
Back having another look at this pre-alpha. Still a great game with a campaign map coming. I have much more fun with this than total war.
so far it's doing a better job of simulating how an ancient campaign would have been than total war in a lot of ways. Much more than I expected, which was just a string of battles one after the other with no relation to one another. I was even able to hire mercenaries. See those Gauls in the army list in the bottom screenshot? I picked them up after pushing the Carthaginians out of the capital Syracuse.
The winter saved me actually. I lost a battle. The campaign season though was over and both civilisations forces retreated to the nearest safely held location. Awaiting the start of the next campaign year/season.
This campaign makes Strategos a must buy for me on day one. I am not really one for looking at an army list and choosing an army to fight an enemy army with via computer. I need a campaign, even if it is just basic.

You have to stop comparing this to Total War. I'm glad you like this more, that's fair, but they are two totally different games with very different appeals, pros and cons. Superficially, it's an understandable comparison, but on introspection they are extremely different games.
I like them both and feel like they each add to the genre in their own unique ways.

I know it's not fair to compare strategos to total war like it has all of Total Wars campaign features, both in campaign mechanical features and all of total wars ridiculous campaign abstraction. But, I need to replace total war. I did it partly with master and command and will probably do so with strategos. The tactical battles with a little context are what I am interested in and both the games I mention above do tactical better than modern total war games and offer that little bit of context I need to believe I have control over how I bring my army to battle. I don't need to control an empire. I just need to control an army on a campaign. Preferably with control over how the whole thing is supplied and planned before it begins. If strategos battles were not better than total wars, I would have no reason to play strategos.
But total war has not advanced itself in the realm of tactical battles for so long and they seem to have no intention of changing their "winning" formula for anything or anyone. Grogs cannot grow with their product and I for one am glad their are finally some games that rival and go beyond their tactical battle offering:
Total War replacements for me.
Ancient: Strategos
Medieval: Manor Lords
Musket: Master of Command
What's wrong with that?

That's a fair point. IMO FoG is a pretty robust tactical battle engine. I haven't tried the strategic layer games (though I own FoG:M) but I believe them to be pretty good also.
I suppose, though, Des is talking about real time battles and obviously the FoG system is turn-based.

I saw that people were playing FOG: Empires and thought it would be cool. However FOGII, Which I have pretty much zero hours in, I just loaded up to have a quick go to answer your question. I do not however have Empires. I have seen a video of it though. I actually think what I have seen of Strategos campaign thus far may do a better job of feeling like a commander. I like the graphics better in Strategos as well, stylised as they are.
The number of men in each unit is much more condusive to immersion and less constrained by the combat width of a hex.
Of course you all know my feelings on the penny packeting of turn based games. You get to move a tiny part of your army and see the reaction before committing to the whole armies planned move. This is a great advantage that real commanders did not have. Strategos is slow enough and can be slower iirc for all of us grogs to enjoy.
Well early access just broke on steam. I grabbed it. I think it's about $20 usd.
Just fought the battle of Zama in the re-enactments menu. Won that as the Romans.
The new campaign map above is available in this build as well. The game is early access and will be for some time I think. But I personally think it's pretty much done apart from the large campaign map. Which functions but is very new.
