Title: Void Crew
Post by: Silent Disapproval Robot on January 06, 2025, 12:08:36 PM
My gang of online gaming buddies twisted my arm and dragged me kicking and screaming into Void Crew.

It's a co-op "light" space sim where up to four of you crew a ship and embark on mini-campaigns of exploration, salvage, and combat across a series of missions ending in a boss fight (if you make it that far).

One player pilots the ship, one is the gunnery officer, one acts as engineer, and one is the EVA salvage specialist.   It's got a bit in common with games such as Wolfpack, Bridge Commander, Barotrauma, and even the board game UBOOT.

It's not a particularly complex game in terms of flight mechanics or physics but there are a lot of things to fiddle around with and tweak.  For instance, we discovered that if we turned off life support for a few minutes and opened the airlocks, we could lower the interior temperature of the ship down to almost zero degrees Kelvin.  Going below -100C started killing the crew, but if you kept it just above -100C, you could fire your guns for a lot longer before they'd overheat.

At the start of each campaign, you can select a pre-made ship or you can customize your own via use of the onboard fabricator.  We tend to do this and make the equivalent of an AC-130 gunship in space.  Having all your guns on one side of the ship allows you to concentrate shields on one side and makes life easier on the pilot and gunners when it comes to acquiring targets (the pilot needs to use sensors to tag them for gunners) and quickly draw a bead on them.  The downside is your other arcs aren't defended and if the baddies get around you, your EVA guy better be good at welding plates to the hull from the outside while under fire.

The game is a pleasant surprise overall and I've been having fun with it.  My friends have played much more than I have though so often I'm lost as to what's going on while they run around the ship fabricating and modding things at a ridiculous pace while I'm still trying to get out of the change room and figure out where the command deck is.

Now that we've got things dialed in, it's actually a bit less fun at times.  I kinda miss the early portions when we were still figuring things out and we'd end up killing half the crew by accidentally blowing them out the airlock by not cycling the doors/pressure properly or breaking everyone's legs when the pilot jumps to void space before everyone's strapped into a chair.
