Title: Elder Scrolls Oblivion remaster/remake
Post by: al_infierno on April 21, 2025, 12:41:54 PM
Bethesda is teasing this one tomorrow.  https://www.dualshockers.com/bethesda-oblivion-remaster-tomorrow-possible-release-date/

Seen some leaked screenshots on Twitter, and it looks pretty damn impressive.  It's clearly a full-on remake and not a remaster.

Looking forward to this.  I just recently tried Oblivion out after picking it up for some chicken feed on GoG and it holds up pretty well already IMO.  I mean it's no Skyrim and the inventory system is a little simplistic but got a feeling I'll be picking this one up to add to my catalog of games without enough time to play!

Same here, I haven't played it in ages and I've long since lost the disc I got when it first came out.  I'm looking forward to toying around with the fiddly character creator and more old-school RPG mechanics that went by the wayside for Skyrim.

Yeah there's something kinda charming that Morrowind and Oblivion have that feels like it's missing from Skyrim.  Or maybe I just haven't gotten far enough into Skyrim.  These games are obviously huge time sinks and I've really only dabbled with Morrowind and Skyrim (and the couple hours I mentioned with Oblivion).

In honor of the remake likely getting announced tomorrow, I picked up Oblivion on GOG for 5 bucks and made a classically hideous character.

Meet Grog the Barbarian.  Grog doesn't understand the value of coin.  He only understands the power of steel.  I plan to roleplay this guy through the whole story (or until I get bored) as the biggest, strongest dumbass in the land.

If you offer him gold as a reward for his service, he'll say "Grog no need shiny coins. Grog need steel."  And if you try to explain to him that you can bring coins into town and exchange them for weapons and armor, he'll probably just bash your head in for using big words.

And here he is after I got him properly geared up.

The remaster is out today!  Color me shocked, I thought for sure they'd announce a June or July release.

I'm surprised it released! Also surprised no discount incentives for owning other Elder Scrolls games. Good news anyway!

Yeah I wishlisted it but there's no way I'm paying $50 right now with all the unplayed stuff I have already collecting dust.  I'll definitely be snagging this on a sale though -- can't ever have too many unplayed games as long as you get em cheap!!

Haven't fired it up yet, but I'm really glad to see the character creator is just as unhinged as ever.  Some findings from Twitter.

Yeah, I'm not paying $50.  But I will purchase once it goes on sale.  IRT unplayed games: I fired up Baldur's gate for the first time last week, and I purchased it when it came out.  I need help.....

How does Oblivion compare to Skyrim? I never played Oblivion.

Can't speak to the remaster yet as it's still loading up, but the original Oblivion still held up pretty well when I messed around last night.  The combat is a lot worse, very floaty and the enemies tend to be spongey, and there's not much in the way of special combat moves.  That said, it has an old-school RPG style character class system, where you pick from a huge list of DND style classes like Barbarian, Knight, Rogue, Paladin, and so on -- and you can even create a custom class.  Your character is less "one size fits all" compared to Oblivion, which is kind of nice for that classic RPG nostalgia.

Also, it's been a while, but I remember the quests in Oblivion being generally more creative and interesting, rather than Skyrim where tons of quests just boil down to "go to this cave and kill a bunch of stuff."

For any Game of Thrones fans in the house, I gotta say -- I hadn't read the series when I played this game back in 2007 when it first came out, but replaying it now, it's friggin' surreal hearing Sean Bean -- the righteous heir of the recently assassinated monarch -- say the line "I'll come with you to hear what Joffrey has to say" in regards to a guy that wants to put him back on the throne.  Especially considering the HBO series wouldn't be made until 2011.

I'm guessing the devs must've been GRRM fans!

I remember feeling that Oblivion was a step down from Morrowind, which I recall really loving. I felt it was more restricted and limited as to what you could do and I hated how the world leveled up with you. It made it feel as if you never really progressed and never became very powerful or skilled. Wish they would remaster that old classic too.

A big plus 1 for what JH posted. It was a huge disappointment for me with its level scaling and stripped out Morrowind features.

Don't know if you guys have tried it or not, but https://openmw.org/ is a really good project that attempts to modernize the engine and fix a lot of issues with Morrowind.  I have actually used it some and it's a big improvement over the original.  I think I remember reading that it supports VR also, although I haven't tried it yet.

4 million is so few days? Sounds wrong. Or impressive.

It's likely that a very large percentage of those users are playing on GamePass, rather than purchasing the game outright.  Still a very impressive number, but a very different picture than 4 million units sold.

Let me get this right:  people are paying £50 for a remastered version of an old game and then modding it so that it looks like the original?

Exactly what I asked a colleague

But not quite - the new one is in a slightly different hue apparently and the mod tweaks the colours

The remaster is a bit desaturated, the mod just brings back the iconic bloom effect
