I bought this one on release and regretted it. The gameplay itself is fine but a little dated. The HUGE problem was the player-base. The game died off right away. It's supposed to be a 40 vs 40 match but, at 1900 PST, servers were usually completely empty. Occasionally, there'd be a single server with a whopping 2 players in it. As there are no bots in the game, it was essentially the world's lamest walking simulator.
The devs decided to put it up for 50% off today and the player base has shot up. There were about 100 players online when I hopped on for a match this afternoon and it was actually pretty fun. Hopefully this sale will actually be enough to push the player base up to the point where the game is viable. I'm not too optimistic, but if you've got an itch for a Cold War shooter along the lines of Red Orchestra/Rising Storm and feel like gambling, now's your chance.
Only 33 people online here atm. Will check tomorrow as it has had an 800 player peak.
If people come back I may be interested. Not sure. Is it a walking simulator? If it's the rising storm devs it might be in between walking simulator and action packed.
It's a walking simulator when you log in to play but all the servers have zero players. Nothing to do but wander around empty maps.
When the servers are populated, it feels a lot like the old RO/RS games. In terms of what's out there now, it's probably closest to Hell Let Loose but on a much more compact map so the action is more concentrated. There are squads with specific roles as well as commanders who have access to off map assets like artillery and recon but there's none of the base building/logistics stuff in HLL. It's purely combat focused. There's a hard limit on roles. The rifleman position will always be available, but machine gunners, AT, marksmen, grenadiers, etc are limited. There's a fair bit of bitching about it. Guys who like to play the marksman all seem to be convinced that they're the best sniper ever and anyone who isn't them is fundamentally challenged.
I think if I was interested in a strictly pvp experience, I'd be looking at Parabellum. It looks absolutely awesome. But I just don't enjoy pvp games and much prefer pve. I'm still loving Gray Zone and I have well over 100 hours into it.
I definitely tend to feel less enjoyment and more frustration when I try to play PvP style games these days. As the eyesight and reflexes continue to fade, my time spent playing is dropping compared yo my time spent staring at the 'you ded. Wanna respawn here?" screen I'm getting really good at respawning.
I saw that Hell Let Loose added Canada as a playable faction in their last update. I installed it and gave the Juno Beach map a whirl. I got murdered 5 times in the same little patch of dirt in as many minutes without ever seeing an enemy. Uninstalled.
Plus, the uniforms and helmets on the Canucks just didn't look right. The colours seemed much lighter than what I've seen and the helmets looked more like a Romanian or Dutch one and less lije the Mk III turtle helmets I've seen.

You are not alone with Hell Let Loose. I think even younger folks rage quit. You walk forever and get shot without seeing an enemy. The key though is teamwork. If you have a squad you have a better chance of at least not getting shot first. Then seeing the enemy and killing him.
I like holdfast for this reason, muskets at least need to be closer and miss a lot.
