Title: General Staff: Black Powder is in Beta on Steam
Post by: Tripoli on June 29, 2026, 06:52:07 AM
After a long development cycle, General Staff: Black Powder is available on Steam. https://www.general-staff.com/in-beta-more-scenarios-added/  See also https://store.steampowered.com/app/1128490/General_Staff_Black_Powder/

I'm one of the original backers, so I guess I'll install this and give it a go.

I only see coming soon. I guess you have to back it?
I can't remember what was special about this title?

Regarding what is special about General Staff: Black Powder.  First, the developer is a graduate of the University of Iowa, so you know it has to be good   (In case y'all didn't know, I graduated from Iowa).  Seriously, the thing that will distinguish this game from others is the AI.  The developer has a Ph.D in the AI field and has done work for DARPA on the subject.  See the second post here for more on the subject: https://www.general-staff.com/author/ezrasidran/

Regarding not being able to play because you weren't a backer: You can request to beta test, if you aren't a backer.  The email address to request to do so is  Betatester@RiverviewAI.com (take a look at the bottom of the post here: https://www.general-staff.com/in-beta-more-scenarios-added/  )

He's from Iowa, he only works in space :)
Yeah, not sure whether A.I. at this zoomed out level needs to be that smart. So I can wait for relase. I appreciate the info though. I have holidays coming soon so maybe if I get bored :)

It looks like it could have a lot of potential. Still 4 battles isn't much to keep you engaged with it too long.

Is it planned to have more battles to flesh it out more?

If you've got a lo-o-o-o-ng memory and enjoyed UMS: The Universal Military Simulator, UMS II: Nations at War & The War College, this is the same designer..

The game is supposed to ship with 15-20 scenarios.
