A security update has a URL listed in the article. No financial data was lost but there was a loss of some info.

Not sure, but it could be this. With +/- 13 million people playing WoW plus Diablo III, they're kinda like Microsoft and Apple before the iPhone. Everyone hacked Micorsoft because hacking Apple didn't amount to any kind of bragging rights. Toppling WoW? That's an accomplishment.

The Blizzard MMO, and now Diablo 3, is a massive target for phishing & scammers what with their massive user base and turds willing to buy stuff from Chinese Gold Farmers (against the agreement) who are common customers of these crooks.
So between email phishing scams and outright hacking people's login info, they hope to log into someone's pilfered World Of Warcraft account and sell off everything that person has collected on their characters over the years. Then they turn around and sell the in-game gold from that, along with their gold farming take, for real world dollars.
It's lucrative for them.
"Follow The Money". That's where you'll find the motive in most things.
