Title: AoE III
Post by: Gusington on September 15, 2012, 11:03:30 AM
Age of Empires used to be one of my favorite franchises...it was the one that basically saw me return to computer gaming. So much so that I even bought the deluxe boxed version of AoE III.

And I was totally disappointed. The original gameplay did not have much variety, especially in single player modes. I never did buy either expansion: the Warchiefs or Asian Dynasties.

Today Gamestop was offering the whole megillah for 9.00. I could not help myself and bought it (I think I paid ~60.00 for the super deluxe boxed version originally). Other than Thief III, this is now the only game that I've bought twice.

IIRC some of you said AoE III improved with the expansions. If you could elaborate here I would appreciate it. Thanks all.

Even I won't buy a game I didn't like twice.

Hmm. Not a rousing set of endorsements. If it's still as craptacular as that well...it was only 9 bucks.

Someone(s) on this board did like it with the expansions...

I didn't really get the hate for AoE III. I didn't think it was a bad game at all.

The expansion nations were a lot more interesting just because they play incredibly differently from the standard European fare. So give some of them a shot.

^A ha...there's a fan. I knew I wasn't losing it. In this case.

I love AoEIII!  My friends and I played mucho mucho MP games.  I'm a terror with the Brits.  I got the Indians expansion and never played it.  MP is really where the value is in that.  And if you become proficient enough and would like some competition, I'll scare up a few friends and we can throw down!  Shoot, we can even play team MP, you and I versus the A.I.  I can cover you until you learn how to play.

Never liked AOE III.  I wanted it to be AOE II and it never was. Although I have to admit I never played MP with AOE III.

I liked Age of Empires II without its expansion more than I liked Age of Empires III with both of its expansions. But that's just me.

If there is one thing I have learned about PC gamers, it's that no matter how good or bad a game is it will always have its followers and no matter how good or bad a game is it will always have its detractors. It would be a very dull world if there were no differences in personal perspectives.

Well I've remember reading that the expansions and possibly a patch really changed the game around from what it was like originally. I'm curious as to how, if anyone can remember...

I can't remember why, but I hated it.  I got it for free from MS as a bribe to install their godawful-piece-of-shit-secret-weapon-to-destroy-PC-gaming-forever GFWL.  You will not believe the lengths I had to go to just to get it downloaded and installed.

I haven't been back to AoEIII or GFWL since.

It's a resource gather RTS.  I like it as much as I do for two reasons: 1) My friends and I played a lot of it and 2) I'm good at it.

I posted somthing about this many moons ago.  LB made a a comment about people being able to write their own macros, so he declined a match with me.  I wouldn't know how to write a macro if you sat down and taught me, but, if you think you want to play it, I'll teach you what I know.

I have played it for a few months and then never went back. Never got any of the expansions and never played MP. I didn't hate it, but it got dull quick...every faction played the same if not very very similar, IMHO.

So that's a, "no"?

No not at all. I'm trying to find out if the gameplay has evolved from when it was first released. The Asian Dynasties expansion looks most promising. I just hope the Chinese don't play the same as the Aztecs, for example.
