Title: Of Orcs and Men
Post by: Gusington on September 27, 2012, 05:52:01 PM
Anyone know anything about this title? I just discovered it on Steam and it looks quite good.

It looks interesting. I plan on pre-ordering it later this month.

Too bad it comes out more or less the same time as the new X-COM game, and shortly before Dishonored.

You know what is hilarious.  I left the exact same comment in that thread that I just left here.  Apparently I am a boring commenter and have not done a good job 'keeping an eye' on this game.   ::)

The storyline and universe look to be really fleshed out well if you check out the site. It comes out at the same time as Dishonored though and well you know...

Also, it's developed by Cyanide Studio. Patchy track record there.

I really liked their Game of Thrones RPG IMHO, so I'm not too worried.

^Really? I haven't much about it since its release. Of Orcs and Men looks solid though and if the price is right I will take the plunge.

A new trailer has just been released: http://www.oforcsandmen.com/?rub=videos&vid_name=buddytrailer

I believe this hits the streets next week.

I need to point out that this has some language in it so be careful at work.

I think I am going to have to wait and see what the masses have to say about this one before being tempted to buy it.  I see is being developed for consoles as well and that always makes me leery.

I didn't get a warm and fuzzy out of that vid.

I'm still probably going to pre-order this.
But there's still about a week until release anyway.

I don't know...I liked it. What's not to like?

The fear of it being a console port.  The concept seems cool, playing as the 'bad guys' and killing the humans.  However, from the gameplay videos and information on the website there doesn't seem to be alot of information on the actual gameplay besides running around killing things even though they claim it is an RPG.

From what I understand you're not playing the bad guys.
That's the thing, the Orcs&Gobbos are actually "good" guys.
They've been conquered and oppressed by the bloodthirsty humans, and now they seek their freedom :P

I heard a lot of dialog and didn't see anything but combos for action.

I should know better than to judge a game by its trailer, but it looks like a generic console action game with a cool orc overlay. The problem is that the trailer should hook me. It didn't. Hopefully that's just mediocre trailer composition.

There is that. They have great ideas that don't quite live up to great. So close, and yet...

Game of Thrones RPG wasn't bad at all.
Blood Bowl games are pretty neat.
So?

So?

Blood Bowl was released with substandard AI and only half the teams.  The other half came out as expansions, and the A.I. is still not great.
Game of Thrones:Genesis was a RTS with some good ideas but so poorly implemented as to be unplayable, and only bore a passing resemblance to GoT.  I don't believe it's ever been fixed.
Confrontation was a poor man's Dawn of War, and disappeared without anyone noticing or caring
Game of Thrones RPG was closer to the source material than the RTS but otherwise generic with poor animation and voice work.

In short, Cyanide is a bed of good ideas, poorly implemented.

And before you ask, yes, I've played them all, and own three of them.
Game of Thrones

Game of Thrones

Confrontation wasn't that much of a DoW. I played it and kinda liked it.
Its main problems were technical.

The RPG had pretty darn good voice-acting to be honest. And still is one of my fav recent-times RPGs.

Cyanide isn't perfect, nor produces masterpieces left and right, but they don't suck that much.

Here is a pretty informative video walk-through from the developer.  It's definitely not a hack-n-slash.  It's more like Dragon Age or KOTOR.

Yes, in terms of combat.  However, from what I'm hearing, the game is very linear and not really an "open-world," per se, and while the story is intriguing, the action gets old. Its also just a 15 hour campaign essentially...I guess a little more if you do random side quests.  Might be one to sit and wait for a good steam sale.

I played the game for several minutes. So far a nice game.

However it does seem to have the bug that's way too common among Cyanide/Focus games,
And that is causing the GPU to overheat.
Can't even find a VSync option for the game.

Yeah man post more! If Orcs turns out to be good and I can avoid that overheating I may be buying more games in the next few months than I usually do in half a year.

Here's a video that seems to give a pretty good idea what the gameplay is like.  I don't think this one's for me.

(also, some accents just don't seem to belong in a fantasy game.  New York Woody Allen-esque Jew is one of them.)

I could love this game but not for 39.99. A rainy day Steam sale purchase it will be, if that. RPS didn't like it much.

What an annoying effing video.  Too many self-styled comedians d*cking around for the first three minutes of every let's play vid just doesn't come off well in most cases.  ::)

I saw it on steam a few weeks back and looked into it. As soon as I saw it was by Cyanide my interest cooled. The trailer looks good but the trailers always do. From what I can work out the combat system is the same as the Game of Thrones Rpg. It was ok but not great so I'll wait until there are a good few player reviews before I decide.
