Title: Friday: the what youd like to play but will end up playing something else thread
Post by: undercovergeek on September 28, 2012, 09:42:00 AM
I hope to play -

CMBN tournament PBEM
CMBN PBEM x 2
Age of Wonders III: Shadow Magic
PrON
CKII

What ill probably end up playing -

CKII

And hopefully some painting of WHFB figures

Im not too sure its like some kind of menstruation process - but im happy with my gaming right now, loving the CKII and CMBN with new adventures to be found in AoW and PrON BUT theres a nagging, itching feeling at the back of my neck to buy a new game - it happens every month, i dont need one, i dont particularly want one. It usually happens on the eve of new releases but not generally for games i want - theres a wargame:EE sale on, but i dont really want it, there AJE but im not sure im sold on it yet, XCOM is on the horizon, as is Game of Dwarves - they all just trigger the 'ooooo shiny games' button and i have to fight off the urge to buy a game i dont want - i must resist!!

Probably some Civ IV Colonization - Started playing again after finding this cool mod (http://forums.civfanatics.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=19763) that makes the game a little more interesting.
I really suck at this game but I can't stop trying to get better.  :P

Some more beta testing.
More work on vassal modules.
Maybe try to get a live vassal game in.

When I'm not working on Red Storm during the weekend I'll sneak in some time on xcom, warlock and maybe some fallen enchantress beta.

I have several campaigns going, so I hope to get a chance to process some turns/time with each to keep them advancing and play around with FTL and Dragon Pass here and there.  I tend to jump between games and process turns to keep them all going... I also have EU Rome game, ES and CIV V that has been setting.... however

- CK II (Trying to take over Poland)
- HOI III (Germany Campaign moded)
- EU III (Brandenburg campaign, in a tight spot)
- OOTP (Continue one of my team rebuild saves)
- AGEOD Civil War (process a couple of turns on a save that has been in limbo)

Mostly

- Alea Jacta Est (Recently purchased)

Audentes fortuna iuvat!

Not much pc playing this weekend, but hope to try out mission 3 in Wargame: European Escalation.

And then some board gaming with the girl friend and maybe unpacking my new Star Wars: X-Wing Miniature Game...http://www.twins4ever.dk/cougarscorner/index.php?/topic/2783-unboxing-star-wars-x-wing-the-miniatures-game-with-expansions/ (http://www.twins4ever.dk/cougarscorner/index.php?/topic/2783-unboxing-star-wars-x-wing-the-miniatures-game-with-expansions/)

I just buy lots of crap and feel like an idiot.  But then I get something good and I'm off on a spree.

The Elusive Victory board game turned out to be a good buy so now I'm on a jet spree:

Back to Strike Fighters 2
Getting an ancient Lock-on: Modern Air Combat set of discs and starting down the DCS World Line

Old sprees that are holding up:
Some Dangerous Waters
Some Harpoon 4.1 Pen-and-paper
And Maybe:
some WWII online
some CKII

I just picked up F1 2012 today so I plan on giving that a spin (pun intended) this weekend at some point.  I'll also be working on Dynasty Warriors 7 and maybe Forza 4.  Throw in some AJE and my PBEM games with Armada 2526 and I'd say it's going to be a great weekend.

I'd like to play Shogun 2:TW but I can't because fuck you Creative Assembly!  Get AIDS and die in a ditch!

I'll probably play FTL, a bit of War Thunder, and drop in for some online Iron Front fun with the SimHQ guys tomorrow.

I've played far too much Warlock of late, so I'll give it a miss and play Warlock instread (maybe even a bit our co-op MP game, if Geek and Huw are both in the same space-time continuumumumum).

And some Nations at War, or maybe the long promised game of Normandy '44........

I am actually totally lost.

The one thing I do know I'll do is try to finish off my B-17 model...apart from that - I'm really not sure.

Here's the list of things I could continue

OOTP13 LA Angels
CM:SF Brits campaign
F1 2012 season
Squad Battles:Falklands
GTR2 Season
ARMA II Campaign

I also want to fire up
Alea Jacta Est
DCS World and give BS2 or A-10C or the new SU a run out

Just too many things. So I'm not sure just now...all I am sure of is finishing the model.

I'm gonna go with AJE.

Also, I installed DCS: Blackshark as well as EECH with the all-mods mod so I'll probably spend some time with that as well.

Honestly, any number of additional games are possible, but I can't say right now.

I want to play Alea Jacta Est, but my mind is frazzled with a heavy cold at the moment, so I've just been idling a bit in Guild Wars 2, with a dabbling on the side of FTL.

That new Small General Eastern Front release on Android is pretty darn good, it's morphing less away from Advanced Tactics and more towards Decisive Campaigns! Plus I keep amusing myself with Dungeon Village, and I dug out my old serial code for Cortex Command, which has just been released on Steam after 11 years in development! (I bought it in 2006!)

Let us know how that is.  I wanted to like Civ IV Colonization but it just seemed broken to me.

I recently was suckered in by a STEAM sale and got Wargame: European Escalation so I'll be giving that a go this weekend when I have time to game.

TCT, I think Toonces mentioned Wargame.  If you get a chance, give us an idea of what you think.  RTS's are good MP and I'm looking for a game and partners.

The love of my life is otherwise occupied this weekend, so, I will be picking up my CKII again.  Fourth try is the charm :-)

Wargame:EE is fun, but you can't get too wrapped up in the whole "realism" thing because although it doesn have some aspects of realism it's not realistic.  The more I play it, the more I think it really is just a really fun RTS game with modern toys.

What I hate about it right now is that you have to unlock everything which is a real bummer.  So you start with a basic set of units available but have to unlock other units by completing missions and getting "command stars".  You unlock units and build a "deck" of units from which to draw, set up a match with a certain point value, and then purchase those units in your deck each of which has a point cost associated with it.  Fairly typical RTS stuff except the unlocking.

I haven't tried MP, but I think if you did it against a fellow wargamer it would be fun.  I've read a lot of complaints about playing MP against kids that just spam units, but since I haven't tried it, I don't have any thoughts pro or con.

I'm ass deep in Germans in CMBN, the last couple of battles of the Road to Monteborg campaign. These last fights are brutal, triple-deep defenses flanked by minefields and I've only got 2 little companies of soldiers and some arty along with 4 tiny tanks to get through them. So if I'm getting my butt handed back to me too much, I'll switch to NTW.

I've had a hankering for some good old fashion Axis & Allies all week, and it's been over a year since I have blown the dust off of my A&A 1940 Europe/Pacific boxes. That 5ft wide map board is a sight to behold when the two are setup together. Alas, I have 36 hours of shifts to work this weekend and will have to wait to play another day.

Thanks, Toonces.  I love a good MP RTS battle.  I'm not a twitch gamer, but I find the length it takes for a typical RTS skirmish is what another person(s) are willing to give to a play session.  I prefer TBS games, but it's hard to find an opponent who has the time and intestinal fortitude to sit for hours to play a good TBS game.

Didn't play anything last night. Finished reading Robert K. Massie's "Dreadnaught" for the second time.

The rest of my weekend will be a split between Skyrim, AJE, and Crusader Kings 2. I broke down and bought Dawnguard the other day, only so I could get some of my mods to work correctly. Starting my 3rd new character since June, because my other two games got corrupted somehow. I'm thinking of starting a new game of CK2 with some gameplay mods. Think I'm going to play William Duke of Normandy and see if I can pull off the invasion of England. My Tuscany campaign has kind of broken down. Made some mistakes, will try to form the Kingdom of Italy again when the new patch and expansion comes out.

Games I may also play: Guild Wars 2, Aurora, Fallen Enchantress Beta.

Kushan,
Make sure you post your impressions of Skyrim.  That was a really happy 20 hours of gaming for me.  I think I logged another 5 hours after Dawnguard was finished before I lost interest in Skyrim again.  Dawnguard really kept me focused and on-task.

I've only played a little bit but so far Toonces' impressions seem accurate.  I looks like it could be a fun MP with guys you know.  The only thing I am kind of iffy about is the graphic elevation changes.  The tiered elevation instead of smooth hills kind of bothers me aesthetically.  Once I get a bit more time with it I'll try and let you guys know what I think.

I'm best at Civ IV.  I just bought Warlock when I got CKII.  Haven't tried it yet.  I'm really enjoying CKII, but I don't know how good I am.  HOI2:Doomsday is a favorite.  A couple of RTS I like, too.

Well, I did it.  I finished the main quest in Skyrim.

Total play time was 117 hours (including Dawnguard) and I was level 31 at completion.

Whew.  I'm sort of emotionally drained now.  The last couple hours were fairly intense and a lot of hard work.  I think I'm going to take a break now, maybe buy Field of Glory from Matrix and try something totally new.

Good run.  That was a lot of fun.  I'm not done with Skyrim yet, but I'm not sure what I'm going to do.  My guy's pretty bad ass right now so I don't know how much challenge any remaining portions of the game will be at this point.

I will be pretty busy with World of WarCraft this weekend since the Mists of Pandaria expansion went live this past week.

But I also plan on playing a bit of Soldiers: Heroes of World War II (http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/soldiers_heroes_of_world_war_ii) which I bought on sale at GOG.com for a mere $3.39 (sale ends soon, so don't put off buying it if you want it--GOG.com won't be offering it for awhile after this sale is over due to licensing issues). I bought the retail boxed version of this game when it was new, before I knew it had StarForce copy protection. That prevented me from installing it and the game has sat on a shelf for the past eight years. Now I can finally play it without worrying about StarForce doing harmful things to my PC.

Good on you for taking a principled stand.  I never knowingly bought a Starforce-infected game.  I did have a couple of games installed that used it, but that was before I realised.  It wasn't exactly advertised on the box.  >:(

Just had an INTENSE game of Atari's Axis & Allies RTS.  Both my buddies had their turn at trying to put me out of the game.  Both men failed.  It was a close run thing though.  CKII last night and Civ IV MP and CKII for the remainder of the day.  And the days slate of NFL action, too.  w00t!!

I always like to see what others are playing  :), I still don't know why some people just hate that, haters. >:(

I will be pretty busy with World of WarCraft this weekend since the Mists of Pandaria expansion went live this past week.

How is the new expansion? Is it worth going back to WoW for?

^I've been watching the wife play - pretty graphix, but gameplay just looks like more of the same. She likes it, but there again, she's a dedicated WoW-Head.

I have mixed feelings about it. I didn't like it when werewolves were made a playable race, and I don't like having pandas as a playable race either. But I was pleasantly surprised to find that the new battle pets are fun. Not so good was the continuation of the daily improvement of tradeskills (although I got my inscriptionist to skill 597, he still has to do the daily research in order to learn one new glyph per day); pretty much more of the same that we've had in the past. I haven't done any PvP at all, so I can't offer any experiences there. The new questlines seem to be well done for the most part, but I don't think much of the new gardening quests I did and started doing (you have to let the plants you planted grow and mature before you can complete the quests) in Pandaria. Although my first and only experience on the new continent was for a few hours last night, I liked it overall but hated the fact that you cannot use a flying mount there until level 90.

You've probably heard that the Talent trees were changed drastically. Glyphs received a little reworking and many of the minor glyphs are only for visual effects. Prime glyphs were done away with. Relics and their counterparts on other classes are no longer usable. Ranged weapons cannot be equipped at the same time as melee weapons anymore. Read the 5.0.4 Patch Notes (http://us.battle.net/wow/en/blog/7080372) for a more complete rundown.

I don't know whether it would be worth it for you to return to WoW or not. It depends on what you like. The graphics are top notch, if that means anything to you. The storyline seems to be about as good or better than most games; about what you would expect from a Blizzard game. I am a very casual WoW player and rarely do any raids or endgame stuff at all, so you'll have to ask someone else about that. You might want to renew for a month just to try it out.

Hope that helps you out.

Kushan,
Make sure you post your impressions of Skyrim.  That was a really happy 20 hours of gaming for me.  I think I logged another 5 hours after Dawnguard was finished before I lost interest in Skyrim again.  Dawnguard really kept me focused and on-task.

I will. Right now I'd just like to make it through the main quest without getting a game breaking bug. I've been watching a YouTube playthrough of the vampire side, so I think I'm going to join the Dawnguard with my character. I haven't read/heard anything on their quests. I'm assuming it will be more or less the same as the vampire's just without getting turned into a vampire lord.

Thanks. Think I'm going to resist and not get it. When I played, quit at the beginning of the year, I was really into it. Wouldn't say I was addicted, but it did have a way of becoming the main game I played. Toward the end I only played to do raids. My shaman used to be be ranked worldwide, for its class and spec. I've logged on a few times since the Pre-MoP patch was released, seem the same as it's been for the last 6 years.

- but im happy with my gaming right now, loving the CKII and CMBN with new adventures to be found in AoW and PrON BUT theres a nagging, itching feeling at the back of my neck to buy a new game - it happens every month, i dont need one, i dont particularly want one.

And Maybe:
some WWII online
some CKII

Jet Spree!

Victory proved elusive in Elusive Victory:  4 Vautours got a '2' (possible damage) on a torpedo boat in a dock and the Egyptians missed with their SAMs (though the evasion made the Neshers dump their bombs in the Red Sea).

Third Wire:  Back to the Falklands again

Lock-onMAC:  Strangely entertaining in a strange way -- the landscapes are better than Third Wire anyway

Probably some Civ IV Colonization - Started playing again after finding this cool mod (http://forums.civfanatics.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=19763) that makes the game a little more interesting.
I really suck at this game but I can't stop trying to get better.  :P

Let us know how that is.  I wanted to like Civ IV Colonization but it just seemed broken to me.

I recently was suckered in by a STEAM sale and got Wargame: European Escalation so I'll be giving that a go this weekend when I have time to game.

Well.. I played Civ IV Colonization all weekend with this new mod..... and I still don't like the game.... just not fun to play. :P
Oh well... not like I don't 500 other games to play instead....

Thanks for sharing that Barthheart about Colonization with the mod.  What one thing specifically turned you off about the game?

Hard to put it down to one thing really.... maybe just 'cause I suck at it... :P I really have no clear picture of how I'm supposed to go about winning it. It's different from regular Civ IV in that you really have to just focus on winning and not just playing the game.
Even on easy when I thought I was doing OK the AI shows up at my border with tons of troops that I have no chance of repelling... this happened with both a native AI and a European one.
So I obviously made some wrong decision many turns before and that's it... hours down the drain.
I've never even made it to the 'Declare Independance' part of the game... always get creamed long before that...
So... I'm done. Deleted it off my hard drive today.

Thanks for the input.  Looks like I won't be reinstalling this one after all.

I played it, too, TCT.  It's been some time ago and without the mod.  I wanted to like it, but I didn't understand how to win.  Hence, I could not plan accordingly.  And Civ tactics didn't seem to be to your advantage either.  Specifically, build lots of cities.

I remember the original Colonization being so much fun so I was very dissapointed with the CivV version.
