Probably a stupid question...what is your callsign SDR?
I also have a couple to give away if anyone is interested
OK, I can't resist.

Thanks Deadskin!
That has a serious amount of aircraft.
What's the deal with this? How does it play? What is the pricing model...buy content? Paid game with DLC? When is it estimated to be out of BETA? Single player mode or online only? Big world with a campaign or single missions set in locations?
You probably can't answer these questions - but I thought I'd ask anyway?
Well - I read it's an MMO with PvP and PvE play. So it'll be subs based I guess.
A bit confused about the blruge - because it states WWII but the fan video made shows a Mig-15 v a F-86 Sabre?
Other questions still stand though - if you can answer them
It looks interesting though
The F-86 and Mig-15 were more or less already on the drawing board during later WW2. If one posits an extended conflict then they might have seen combat in 1949 or so, with the ongoing conflict slightly accelerating their introduction. The first Allied jet in combat (sort of) was the Gloster Meteor which downed some buzz bombs and the P-80 was flying back in the states before VE day. The DH Vampire was also in the final stages.
I think it's World of Tanks in the skies.
Anybody else with keys?

It also covers the Korean War/Conflict:
Quote
War Thunder is an MMO Combat game dedicated to the most pivotal World War II and Korean War battles. In particular, War Thunder lets players take part in massive multiplayer aerial combat, fighting alongside real players all over the world. The game's major battles will be set during the period from 1939 to 1953.

In fact, I'm fairly certain that War Thunder started out life with the name 'World of Planes'
This is indeed the old world of planes. It will one day include ships and tanks for players to control. As far as the game so far it blows away World of Warplanes by the World of Tanks guys. The graphics are far away better and there are a lot more airplanes to chose from......with more in the works. Both me and Dead skin play together regularly so keep an eye out for us.
I also have invite keys if there is anyone else that wants one.
Deadskin kindly sent me a beta key so I will be dusting off my Logitech joystick and checking out the game. :)
You can be competitive with mouse and keyboard. It's what I fly with and I do fairly good if I do say so myself, I shoot down Sunflare regularly. ;)

::) You cant shoot down a limp noodle. You FINALLY have a good match last night and all the sudden your superman. Lets just say I down your planes at least 3 times as often as you get mine. :P
Glory hounds.
Bombing is what wins matches.
(It's also where the sweet, sweet XP is. Not that it does much good. I've dumped 600+ crew points into getting 4 trained gunners in my Welly Mk. X and it still goes up like a Roman candle if anyone so much as glances at it.)

Bombing wins sometimes and sometimes it doesn't. Defending the ground targets is equally important. My best game involved defending our last two destroyers since no one was killing theirs. I ended the game with two ground kills and 17 air kills. They simply ran out of planes. So downing planes wins as well.
When you fly the bombers are you controlling the aft guns ever? You down more planes if you do.
No. I find the gunner controls way too cumbersome to use. The game has mapped the turret control to the little mini stick/hat on my CH throttle and its too touchy to use for fine aiming. I have tried to remap it/adjust sensitivity but the game doesn't accept the changes. I have the same problem with rudder controls. They are way too sensitive so if I move my joystick rudder just a few multimeters, my plane yaws wildly. Makes dogfighting a challenge as keeping my gunsight on target is hard in a turning fight. I have to stick to BnZ tactics. Shame I fly British planes which are better suited to turn fighting.
I can adjust the rudder sensitivity but I still haven't been able to dial it in properly. It's either twitchy as hell or barely responds at all. There are a fair number of players who have found the same thing and are posting about it in the closed B forums.
WOW that sucks. I had alittle trouble dialing in the sensitivity, but once I got it it worked out well. When I go to the gunners position I normally set the plane in a slight climb and then use my mouse to aim the guns. Its way easier than the hat.
I have a Track IR and it fights with the mouse for control of POV. I lose the fine turret control but I gain a lot in situational awareness. I hope they implement bomber cockpits because once they do, I will fly in full real, cockpit only servers exclusively.
I also found the hardware setup to be a bit tricky, but have managed to tune things up well enough over time. I haven't bothered with the tail gunner for the same reasons SDR mentioned. I'd like to find a working config for this as I'm sure it does alot to increase life expectancy.
I never would have imagined that a mouse/keyboard setup could compete with a good joystick or even HOTAS. Don't think there is any getting around the benefits of a good head tracker though.
I used the in game setup wizard and it did a pretty good job of detecting and setting up my controllers. It's just been an issue of fine tuning now and it's really only the rudder that's giving me problems. It'd be nice to have the option to tweak controller profiles to each plane. My rudder reqs for my Wellingtons and Beaufighters are different from what I'd like for my Spitfires and Typhoons.
I've been playing WoWP's beta thus far, but I'd be up for checking this out, too, if anyone has beta keys left.
Thanks to SDR, I'll be in & running sometime soon.
The d/l is pretty slow, though. Good thing it's a torrent because their direct upload speed is between 50 and 110 KB/s. :-[ Gettin' most of it from others hosting the d/l which is about 2x to 3x that (still not good). Sorry, just found it odd for an MMO to have such a terribly slow game file upload. It does look like it has tons of wholesome goodness in the game itself, however. 8)
My nick is Nefaro (insanity!!). I suppose that is what we're identified by in-game?

I found that I kinda prefer the mouse & keyboard over my joystick in another similar Beta going on right now. It just feels more precise, easier on the carpal tunnel, and it's far easier to set up. Tweaking joystick settings has become a big pain in the ass since each joystick seems to have it's own sweet spots and it takes trial and error to find yours. But I'll give the joystick, and the settings, a couple shots before deciding of course. ;)
Thanks for the keys Sunflare.
Apparently mouse and keyboard is the way to go. They implemented it cleverly in the game.
I configured my HOTAS at the start but the method is cumbersome and not reliable.
Saw Nefaro in battle today. Good to see some Grogheads out there.
So what's everyone flying and where?
In my hangar, I currently have:
Wellington Mk X
Beaufighter Mk VIC
Beaufighter Mk X (my fave)
Spitfire Mk XVI
Typhoon Mk IA
I usually check the historical missions to see if anyone's flying full real mode with Brit planes. If so, I join up. If not, I go into arcade madness and get blowed up a lot.

I'm not terribly crazed about the mouse controls in this one, so I've been spending a lot of time tweaking all the joystick settings. The rudder tweaking has been a real pain and I'm still not satisfied with where I have it.
Excellent game. The damage modeling is impressive. 8)
I started on the American line because there's a P-38 in there. I wouldn't mind a Jug either. I sure hope that they haven't lowered the leveling requirements for beta. It's taking forever to rank up this Rank 1 Noob Lawnmower with wings (a Buffalo) as it is. ;D
But you burned so artfully on the edge of the island runway.
Earlier this week I got a beta key from Deadskin (Thanks again!). Signed up this afternoon and downloaded the game. Didn't like my passwd when I tried to login so I requested another. Hopefully I can get one soon as I'd like to give WT a go tonight. How long does it normally take for them to respond? Thanks...

Actually, they went the other way with the leveling and increased the requirements in the last patch. I have a level 8 pilot with a level 8 ranking in the Brit forces. Prior to the last patch, I got my Welly Mk X and my Spit Mk XVI at level 7 and 8. They now require level 12 or something.
Good luck with the rudder. I still haven't got mine tweaked either.
If you want quick XP, land and take hostile/neutral airfields, blow up destroyers on naval maps, and fly some historical or sandbox missions.

Japan: A6M5 KO Reisen, A6M5 Reisen, A6M3 mod 22, Ki-61 lb Hei
British: Beaufighter Mk X, Wellington Mk Ic Late, Spitfire Mk Vc, Spitfire Mk Vb, SPitfire Mk II, Hurricane Mk II
I can switch between sides and let the planes repair for free, haven't played anything but Arcade and some of the single player missions.
Jesus! Have you bought lions or something?
I got free Lions for owning Wings of Prey and the Luftwaffe expansion. I did buy the pacific campaign pack in the ingame store for $20 that gave me some more which I used for extra slots and converting xp.
Finally got in. After having my a** handed to me more times than I want to admit, I finally got my first kill...a Wellington. 8)

I gave up on using the joystick. The controls were just far too sensitive for my tastes, even when turned down all the way
and non-linear up to 40+%. Back to mouse flying!
Wish their matchmaker didn't hate me so much. I see the people in queue go count up from 2 (me) to 36+ people then drop back to 2 again on a regular basis, and I'm still left sitting there. This waiting 4:15 to get into a match blows.
Also: I don't have access to their Beta forum, and many others don't either. I get the impression that these guys don't have many English speaking employees.

This really is a superb game. Minus some tweaking needed, of course.
Hey! Are they gonna do a wipe before official release? Because I see people mentioning getting awarded Gold Eagles for things they've purchased and that wouldn't make sense getting the cash shop points if there will be a wipe. I expect a wipe in every beta, though, but just thought I'd ask because those two things didn't jive.
I already spent all my lions on uselessness so I wouldn't mind a wipe and reset. I converted mine to XP to I could unload somewhere in the neighbourhood of 1000 crew points into training 4 gunners for my Wellington. What a waste. Tey might score one or two hits before the whole thing goes up like a roman candle. In terms of ruggedness, the Welly compares slighty less favourably than a Christmas tree ornament.
I don't know what the Brits did to cheese off the Russians so much, but there doesn't seem to be much love lost. The World of Tanks guys won't even make a Brit tank line. If you look into the War Thunder achievments ledger, you need to shoot down 500 German, Japanese, or Soviet planes to get an award, but you need to down only 50 Brits or Yanks to get the same award.

I've wondered that, myself. Those Russian devs definitely don't like the Brits. I mean.. even the
French got their tanks in WoT. ::)
At least the Brits are
in War Thunder. And those Spits melt faces.
*I'm still curious if there will be a wipe. I suppose some forum digging might give me a nugget of truth in all the speculation. I just find it odd that they jacked the XP requirements up so high - while it's still in beta. It's taking for-fookeen-ever just to grind through to Nation Level 4. And people being given golden lions for stuff? I still don't understand why they would do that unless they plan on giving the exact same amount to you guys again, after a reset, which would be extra work on their end.
Mehh.. something odd here:
QuoteAt the next stage of the beta test we'll make it possible for you to exchange real money for in-game Golden Eagles.
Attention! There is no necessity to bring the money into the game!
Since the game is running in beta-test we can reset your accounts for testing purposes or because of substantial changes in the mechanics of the game.
Therefore consider this circumstance making any payments with the real money.
All operations with money in the game are limited to purchase of Golden Eagles(aka Eagles). All Eagles that you have bought earlier you can verify in your YUPLAY profile separately from testing-related wipes.
We will try to save the Eagles you've purchased during beta-test for the real money, by this way:
it will be as much Golden Eagles on your account after the wipe, as you have bought for real money before it (or, probably, as much, as you could buy for the same price after it)
In any case, we will try to avoid wipes as much as possible.
Let us remind it once again:
Any payments with real money are not necessary at all. By doing any actual payments you accept all the information and terms listed above!
That was in General Chat. So I guess it
will be saved for after wipes? Then again I'm not quite understanding what he's saying about "real money" not being necessary, but then this stuff carrying over.. Confuzzled.
Maybe they just mean to reassure beta players that they don't need to buy Eagles to continue playing if the player doesn't mind the grind.
I was finally able to play last night after spending almost 30 minutes repeatedly trying to map out my joystick for just the easy mode option. I got frustrated because the options almost always seam to end up backwards no matter what direction I push the stick during setup. It's almost like they don't want anyone using flight controls. I gave up and went with mouse instead but I can't wrap my head around it, especially since I have a very small mousepad and minimal space next to my keyboard. Also, my wrist and forearm were not liking an hour of mouseflying at all. I've gotta get that stick worked out. BTW, how long does it take to build up enuf xp to graduate from the weenie rides?
You can hit level 2 in a specific nation without much fuss. That will give you a better fighter and some kind of bomber to buy. Fill up your five crew slots with all those new ones you can (will have to spend extra on the fifth crew slot for one - you only start with two).
I'm at Level 3 on the US planes. And this is where it's reeeeeally begun dragging. I've been flying these two Brewster Buffalos for many missions and the xp bar is just barely inching towards Level 4. :'( And Level 4 is when you first start getting the good stuff. I fear that premium will be a requisite if you actually want to make much progress after Level 3. I dunno how many of you guys who've been in beta have tried levelling from zero in a nation, since the XP changes.. but perhaps it gets a bit smoother once you get up there and start earning more per match? And, yes, I'm racking up extra points for kills & bombing & such.
I've probably spoken too much about details. Hopefully get the beta forum thing done now that I PM'd a mod.
Discovered a potential exploit. Once you run out of fuel due to fuel leak, the engine dies. No problem, just restart and and you're good to go. :)

I think that was intentional, like the ammo reloads. I'm usually so shot up by that point that I just kamikaze into somebody and grab the next crate out of the hangar.
Some people have stated that there will be no progression wipe at official release, now that we are in "Global Beta". No guarantees, supposedly, however.
I thought it odd that they were offering the paid services for actual cash right now but evidentally we're in a bit of a (restricted) early release stage. *shrug*
Anyway.. someone send me lots of Nation Level XP so I can pick up my P-40 and SBD. :P
Finally made Level 4 on the American side. Got the P-40E and SBD. :D
I've seen people complaining about cannon not being powerful enough, but I've been regularly 1-shotted, in my lowbie planes, by aircraft with 20mm cannon on them. Notably Spitfires, because they're currently the 800lb gorilla and I see them fairly often.
The thing with these games, like WoT, is that the developers still have to place artificial values on damage capabilities and create artificial damage models. And such things lead to problems. There's a big difference between the damage models of these current two warplane games. That and the maps being the most notable differences.
One thing I'm a bit concerned about in WT: the developers are Russian. The Wargaming.net guys running WOT have been an exception in support, for Russian developers, in my experience. Without going into details, let's just say I'm a bit wary of how things are run when it comes to such a situation, these days.
Big update today.
You guys been at it lately?
Download took forever but I've played a few missions. I really like the new map. Lots of targets for bombing. Racked up 25 kills with my Welly before a Yak severed my elevator cables.
Did any of you see the Top Secret Ninja Sh*t news, recently, regarding upcoming content? :D

I've asked for a new wave of Beta keys, along with others, because the EU servers are very low population. But thus far I've not seen any new ones other than perhaps yet more newbs on the Russian servers. ::)
I hope they don't have the same tendencies of many other Russian devs in that the rest of the world is just an afterthought. They need to spread the word around because they got a real winner on their hands but there's not much buzz about it in the anglo-'net. Having to pass on beta feedback through only one English-speaking part-time dev isn't very efficient either so it feels pretty disconnected for a beta, to me. Despite all that - the game and the engine is pretty awesome. But they're gonna need more testers to push the EU server limits sometime.
This evidentally went Open Beta recently.
(and the NDA is over, too!)
I read the post mentioning that the "Russian server is now in Open Beta". That was a bit of an odd way to say it since the EU server runs on the exact same version as the Russian server, and you can choose to join the next available game on either one. A bit confusing but perhaps it's just the usual Russian devs not giving much thought to the rest of the world. :P
Anyway.. sounds like you can sign up & get flying now. There will be no wipe at the end of Open Beta so don't worry about having to start from zero again. You can also purchase premium time & all that shiny stuff, if you want. I've not purchased anything yet and have had a good time. But I plan on doing so before long. :)
I think you should be able to sign up and get the d/l going by clicking the "Test Now" banner at the top.
http://warthunder.com/en/
Tips after install: IIRC, there is probably a torrent for the beta you can download somewhere. It was much much faster that way when I downloaded the bulk of the game the first time. Also!! After you click "Join Game" from your hangar, click the "Server" button at the very top of the next screen and choose 'Both' instead of just the EU server. You'll get into games a helluva lot faster as I don't think many are using the EU server yet.

..despite the couple friendly kills during the initial ground attack mess (I did a rocket run in my Hurricane II and a couple guys came flying in on a treetop strafing run at just that moment. :-[ ). Oh, and Spitfires are OP. The 20mm Hispanos are the best weapon in the game and the Spits turn fast, and retain decent energy doing so. Murderous!
Has nobody else jumped into the Open Beta yet?! You're nuts if you have any interest in a WWII air war MMO. ???
There was a big update yesterday. I've not seen the English patch notes yet.
If you fly a planet with turrets, do the AI gunners engage enemy planes? What about ground targets?

If you fly a planet with turrets, do the AI gunners engage enemy planes? What about ground targets?
Yes. The AI will fire your guns for you. You can also move to the Gunner View (F6 IIRC?) and fire yourself, but I would often rather maneuver defensively so enemy pilots don't get easy steady shots at my engines and weak points on the wings. I'll sometimes switch to gunner for taking some pot shots at approaching ones, though. Just remember that you also have to distribute XP points for your crew skills, and gunner skills are a tab unto themselves - always good to place points in gunner accuracy and such, for crews that you will use for bombers.
There has been some complaining about the AI gunners being
too accurate on bombers, but I think people have just been putting a decent amount of points into those crew skills in those cases because the untrained AI gunners aren't terribly amazing until you get some points in there. I've also seen some dumb pilots come screaming straight in, from the rear, and get their pilot shot & killed because they were driving straight at the bomber. ::) And it can be real easy to get your pilot killed from head-on attacks.
Do the turret gunners engage ground targets? I dunno. I don't think so, but I try not to keep my bombers at such low altitude because the AAA ai gunners can be deadly, especially if there are lots of them or if you aren't weaving & bobbing when they're firing at you! You could probably fire manually, from the gunner position, but that would mean your aircraft is flying straight & level - and hitting a ground target with a single machinegun (and destroying it) would be a long shot anyway; maybe a dual-gun ball turret would be the best bet but there really aren't many planes with a wide firing arc underneath the fuselage.
They've added Hangar Chat, Friends List, Platooning and all that stuff. Along with some graphics improvements (as if it looked or ran bad before? *shrug*)
So add 'Nefaro' to your Friends Lists. If anyone else is playing.. :P
Is there coop multicrewing of bombers?
They've opened US servers for War Thunder.
The drop down is next to the "Server Selection>" line on the "Join Battle" window. Just click the name of whatever server setting is selected to bring up the list & choose a new one ("Any Available" is the default but could mean you will probably end up playing on Russian or EU servers with a higher ping - unless you live there of course).

War Thunder now live on Steam.

Has it? I recently joined War Thunder via the main website/client. If I knew it was on Steam, I would have signed up via that rather than use the client. I wonder if I can transfer over to Steam....
BTW: I tried War Thunder because of my current fixation with World of Tanks. After playing WoT, I started getting curious about their follow-on title, World of Warplanes. And after trying World of Warplanes, I heard about War Thunder and moved on to that! ;D I wrote a compare and contrast on my blog (http://www.burkesjoystick.com/2013/08/get-your-snoopy-on.html), if anybody is curious about the difference between the two.
Yeah.. it's been listed on Steam for a long time. Not sure if it was restricted to previous Closed Beta people to use or what, however.
I thought could be installed on there for some time now.
I just started playing this on a whim. I wasn't expecting much because I don't find pre-modern aerial combat exciting...usually. This game is far from unexciting though! I think it's the landscapes mixed with the fact that all the battles have ground strike elements...it keeps everyone low and provides lots of opportunities to weave around hills and stuff, trying to lose your attacker. I've had a blast so far. I'll definitely be back with questions though, because the game doesn't explain much.
The F2P model is good, too. Eagles don't cost a lot...I spent something like 3EU to buy my way into a bomber and had plenty left over. (I was getting sick of not being able to attack ground targets)

I used the main client too, because Steam's search can't differentiate between WarThunder and War Thunder. ::)
However, apparently you can do this (http://forum.warthunder.com/index.php?/topic/56415-import-war-thunder-into-steam/). I'm copying the data now, will report back.
Edit: Yep, it worked just as described. Steam has discovered it and it's now downloading a further 900-odd MB. No idea why.
I've been dabbling in WoT again lately and was thinking of giving War Thunder another try too ( I messed with it during the beta but uninstalled).
I was trying to figure out if it was better to go via Steam or to go through the main website. Pros and cons?

Either way, you'll still be using the game's own launcher. But if you install via Steam you'll have the community overlay and it's easier to connect with others you know who play the game. Plus, it can always be said that it's good advertising for the developer. :)

Doesn't matter. WT has an in-game buddy list and chat features nowadays so unless you wanna keep your Steam overlay pop-ups and stuff going while you play, there isn't much difference.
Tip:
If you're using mouse & keyboard, I suggest setting up both the "Mouse Aim" Control Tab's key bindings to what you want, along with some of the extra commands on the second tab named "Simplified Controls". I believe the Simplified set contains a few that are still usable in Mouse Aim (speed brakes maybe? And something else?) so go through that list if you want to change those keybindings. Just make sure you select the "Mouse Aim" tab again before saving, otherwise you'll use "Simplified's" mouse control scheme which is completely different (you no want!)!!
I think you may have to set your 'mouse aim' controls to inverted, depending on your preference. If you have the "Mouse Aim" scheme set, you should just have a circle which you can move with your mouse - the aircraft will roll, yaw, and turn to put the crosshairs on that spot as best it can. Very straightforward. However, it tends to wanna always roll your aircraft back upright even when you try to loop so I suggest also mapping the three flight surfaces to WASDQE keys (or whatever your preference) after you get a feel for it. This is so that you can override the 'flight assist' when you need to make tight pulls while inverted or fancier looping.
Also.. you have to set most of your graphics options in the launcher, not in-game. I believe the full list is accessed by a cog symbol on the launcher, IIRC. The gfx engine actually runs very efficiently in WT.. something not many 3D games can boast these days. My new rig acts like it's sitting idle when running the game nearly max'd.
Thanks for the input gents. I played WT with mouse and keyboard when I tried it because I couldn't be arsed to pull out the HOTAS but now I've got a cheap stick with twisty rudder and will probably try that. I had messed about with Wings of Prey on Steam ages ago and Birds of Steel or whatever the Xbox version was and WT seems pretty similar in many ways. Kind of gamey, though very nice looking.
I'm still searching for the game that will bring back the good times of Air Warrior though I know it cannot happen. I tried Aces High for awhile and it just didn't have "it", whatever "it" was that AW had. Partly to blame too I suppose is there are guys playing now who have more virtual hours of flight time than all the pilots of WWII put together ;D
Cheers!

Oh, don't worry - there are plenty of really thick people playing WarThunder. :D
The number of people I've shot down because they insist on approaching my Havoc directly from the rear...
That's it now.... I'm signing up
Hooray Geek! I'm looking forward to blowing you out of the skies! :D
What's a Havoc?
I might give this a pop too. Online only I guess, and I'm not a massive fan of online play - but I dipped out on World of Tanks, so maybe I should give this a look.

Have they fixed historical battles yet? I gave up almost a year ago because the arcade stuff wasn't really my cup of tea but the historical battles weren't really fleshed out at that point. Tier balancing was off. Objectives still seemed pretty arcade and the whining and acrimony over flight models was astounding.
Maybe I'll give it another whirl. I wonder if my stats are still active.
so...............
played for 30 mins - 6 kills, 6 deaths - had a great time
quick questions - can you earn the red currency or do you have to pay ££ - will i ever get a hurricane just by playing the game?
planes with turrets - does an AI man those or can you switch in game?

Yeah, the matchmaking system seems to work well from what I've seen so far. As a noob I am clearly being matched against other noobs and it's not unreasonable to expect a good k/d ratio out of the gate. Glad you're enjoying it!
Quotequick questions - can you earn the red currency or do you have to pay ££ - will i ever get a hurricane just by playing the game?
There are ways to earn them...one way I've seen is to take part in events (you should see a button on the left on the hangar screen). However, you can buy a particularly generous amount with little money. I spent 3 EUR and still haven't run out. :) I'm 90% certain I got my Hurricane by just playing. In fact, unless I'm mistaken you can't just drop some cash and buy anything you want anyway.
Quoteplanes with turrets - does an AI man those or can you switch in game?
Yes. :D
AI will drive any spot you're not currently occupying. You can earn XP to allocate to your crews, to improve their aim for example. But you can man any position you want. Not sure whether the AI will fly your plane for you though.
lol - this is going to be awesome - im upgrading to wirraway right now

You can unlock all those red aircraft by playing. I've found that the base in-game currency, "Silver Lions", can get pretty tight if you're buying all the aircraft from all the nations as soon as they are unlocked. So manage your Silver Lion expenditure unless you want to buy some with real money. The only ones you can't unlock by playing are the ones in the column on the far right side of each nation's tech tree. Those cost 'Golden Eagles' (real money currency) and are just extra aircraft that provide a permanent Premium-like earnings bonus when flying it.
I turned off Automatic Repairs for every nation, and do that manually. When you fly anything but the base starter aircraft, they'll cost you Silver Lions to repair if they're damaged after a battle. If you don't plan on playing that nation again after that match, they repair automatically over a period of time so I don't recommend repairing them until you're getting ready to fly another mission with them immediately.

The AI automatically mans your turrets if you're flying the aircraft. They suck, even after putting aircrew experience points into them. For some odd reason AAA, and especially destroyer AA, can be quite good at shooting you if you're not weaving & bobbing but aircraft gun crews blow.
If you want to man the guns yourself, the default hotkey is F6. The plane will be automatically flow straight & level while you're in this view. To return to the pilot's seat, hit F1 or F2 (IIRC). One of those is cockpit view and the other is the default external.
In bombers that have a proper bombsight, F7 is the view for that. You can still control the rudder while in this view (with mouse or joystick) for fine aiming and the 'Zoom View' toggle hotkey also works in the bombsight (and most other views).
so i could man the turret but get flown into a mountain!
hmmmmm - wirraway or not?!

Yep! Don't relinquish control if you're so low as to run into a mountain! I've done it before, wasn't pretty.
There aren't many bombers I'd recommend buying for Gold Lions. I have bought a couple (the BTD and the British A-20) because they are exceptionally fast. I believe people say that Australian fighter is a good buy for something around Tier 5 or whatever it is (the one with the 20mm cannon) but I've not flown it.
Edit: The Boomerang is the Tier 4 I was alluding to. As I said, I've not flown it.
Also keep in mind that going from the super slow noobie biplanes to the faster mono-wing ones takes a little adjustment. You can no longer turn on a dime, but you are faster and generally have more firepower.
And remember to toggle on your Flaps if you get slow in a turning fight. That'll help you cut your circle in a tad tighter. Just remember to toggle it back off when you are done turning and need to regain speed.
i skimmed a bush in my gladiator - that didnt end pretty either
and there is no double entendre in any of that sentence!!

great advice, thanks Nef!

Perhaps it's because I'm only flying with noobs at the moment, but they haven't sucked for me. I get at least a couple of kills in most battles thanks to my AI tail gunner. I've put a load of XP into accuracy and precision, which should make a difference.
Meant to post this in the past:
A link for new people registering their login that gives you 50 free 'golden eagles'. It's not much at all but if you're just starting, may as well take whatever extras they'll give.
http://warthunder.com/en/registration?r=userinvite_1106367
Note: I don't get any rewards for this - it's just a bonus for new users.

Got the Tier 2 Havok I, it's excellent.
The A-20 is a fast bastard. Same for the British version, the Havoc.
They don't carry a huge payload but speed is life, especially for bombers in WT.
I see they've got a sale on premium stuff for 50% off on Steam today. If I switch over to Steam, is it possible to keep my stats and planes and whatnot? Even though I hardly play anymore, I don't want to lose my tier 13 planes and start over again from scratch.

Hrmm..
I downloaded WT on my laptop through Steam and it still asks for a WT login. Dunno if it linked my Steam account to my WT account or not but I'm pretty sure I didn't need Steam running to use it afterward so there probably isn't any link.
I can't say for sure. Are they some kind of 'new account' specials or is it just straight-up discounts on gold eagles or packages? I would think that if you d/l the client on Steam, and use your current WT login while starting it through Steam, that you could purchase Steam discounts just fine.
I tried a few full-real and historical battles last night to see how the new 1.37 patch plays. I like the fact that they've added more fidelity to the flight models, even if it means my Typhoon and my Beaufighters kinda fly like bricks now. There was a LOT of whining in chat and it sounds like they didn't get around to updating the flight models for a lot of the German fighters yet, so they're currently enjoying a big advantage over other nation's planes in the historical and full realism battles.
They need to stop half-assing the flight & damage models.. especially when making drastic changes.
Just fixing up most of the Soviet line and a few odd others should result in their customers complaining. I love the game but they've dicked around on too much of that stuff for quite some time now. I'm sure part of the reason is because they're busy creating the two other games that will fit into their system but for fookssake they need to get all the stuff in this one fixed up.
The never-ending beta state is starting to chafe on me when there have been numerous aircraft in the game that have been there for nearly two years with crappy generic placeholder FMs and/or DMs. Then they go drastically change one of those facets and make such aircraft even worse. ::)
RAWR?

After 1.37 it takes much longer to grind research for aircraft, unless you burn thousands of gold eagles to convert "free research points".
It already took ages once you reached around Tier 8+

Should be an epic festival of mid-air collisions and lawn darts as the 222nd "Me-first!" Squadron shoulder-shoot and pull 800kph dives in order to be the one who gets credit for killing that AI biplane. All while ignoring the 3 F8Fs ripping the rest of their team to pieces.

War Thunder:Ground Forces
"A lot of work has been dedicated to our Ground Forces. It is too early to say if player controlled ground units will appear in 1.39. CBT is at full blast and many of CBT members think that the game can be released for open test, we still want to fix, check and finish a lot. Ground Forces may be released in 1.39 but most likely it won't happen before Spring."
Shit!!!
I'm ready to chuck WoT now to play this.
Hurry up Spring!!!

The American P-80's (YP-80A) were in Italy, getting ready to go operational but, never saw combat. I worked with a guy many years ago who flew P-38 Lightnings in Italy, his squadron was a month away being trained on the P-80's when the war in Europe ended.
Version 1.39 is live today. It adds a tonne of new stuff. I really like the ability to select different calibre weapons individually now. I also think I'm going to have to leave my beloved Lancaster in the hanger for the foreseeable future as they've added
Schräge Musik cannons to some Luftwaffe and Japanese planes. I imagine everyone with any
Nachtjaeger variant in their hanger is going to be obsessed with bomber hunting to try out their new toys.

Updated:
The Spitfire Mk IX (USA) price has changed to 6900 Golden Eagles with a temporary discount of 70%. The discount will be discontinued two days after the Update is released.
Korean jets BR has been increased to 8.7 (they are much less likely to meet lower ranked aircraft in a battle)
Gonna have to check this out. Hopefully the servers aren't so jammed with people that they're constantly freezing.
Judging by my patch download speed, that will be the case.
I don't want Canadair Luftwaffle Sabres or F9F Panthers, I want Golden Age Biplanes such as the Boeing P-12 and Curtis Hawk and transitional monoplanes such as the Peashooter and Martin 139 bomber.
Any chance they might go back and do a retro thing?
I want jets from the 60s to the 80s. Don't think that will happen either.

That's already in the game. Just fly Tier 1 and you get all that stuff. I think there are three different Peashooter variants and two Hawk variants. Some of the early and pre-war era planes make for great low level turn and burn dogfights.
What're the earliest bombers you can fly?
The earliest available is the Soviet Po-2 from 1927.
Here's a link to the flyables database that you can sort through to see what tickles your fancy. Keep in mind that this list was from the beta so quite a few more planes have been added since, but they're mostly late-war and Korean war era stuff.

Thanks guys.

You can get into light & slow bombers pretty quickly, after a few matches.
The big hump to getting new aircraft is earning in-game money with which to purchase them, aka "silver lions". I'm not sure how quickly the lower tiers unlock these days, but the mids and up get unlocked fairly quickly but you gotta grind out the rewards to buy them. Takes awhile for the higher Tiers even if you're using Premium time. I suspect that's where they've received a good portion of cash purchases - for straight up buying silver lions because they've lowered the match rewards for them a couple times since release.
I don't find the grind to be bad at all. Just don't waste time in the Arcade Battle servers. Realistic Battles give you 3x the awards value and Simulation Battles give you 6x. If you play on the weekends when your first battle for each nation gives you 4x for your first victory, you ca. Rake in the research points and silver eagles. It takes way more time to earn all the specific optimization upgrades for an individual plane than it does to earn the plane itself.

Realistic Battles are the
definition of "wasting time".
I love to fly in them but I end up spending long stretches waiting in the queue and twiddling my thumbs. Can get into an Arcade battle with about a 5 to 10 second wait and get enough kills to nullify the RB bonuses, without having to wait.
I'd fly more RB but they rarely pop fast enough on the US servers when I'm playing. :-\
I play on US servers. Wait's usually only about a minute and rarely more than two. I just alt-tab out, browse and wait til I hear the start music and jump back in.
.
Guys, is there a game mode which restricts views to in-cockpit? I'm not interested in fighting either with or against others who are flying in third-person view. For tanks that's fine, but not for airplanes, IMO.
Custom battles allow you to restrict views to cockpit only and remove the red and blue HUD tags.
Simulation battles do the same. None of the bombers and very few of the heavy twin engine fighters have had their cockpits done yet though so they still get a Wonder-Woman view of the world. (I think only the Mosquitoes, the P-38s, and the Bf-110s have had their cockpits done at this point.)

Some of the Soviet twin-engine aircraft have theirs done, of course. Like the Pe-2. Not surprising since the Soviet line has often been their biggest focus.
But, yeah, many parts of the game are still unfinished. Not just the cockpits but the flight and damage models on numerous aircraft. They tend to add new aircraft and just leave them with funky placeholder FMs and DMs which cause all kinds of a stink.
.
So is air and ground a separate game choice or am I flying my plane over the same battlefield you're driving your tank?
.
For those who are flying: how would you describe simulation mode in WT? Does it feature things like mixture settings and propeller blade angle management or does it merely define the way the damage and physics are modelled?
It does have complex engine management and you can adjust mixture and prop pitch. It's not plane specific though so don't go in expecting different types of WEP for different planes. Sim mode can be a lot of fun but not that many people play it and for some reason WT limits the nations available so for 2-3 weeks it's only USSR vs. Germany. If you want to fly as the UK/ Commonwealth, the Japanese, or the US, you'll have to wait until the map cycles. USSR vs. Germany is heavily favoured though so it's usually a 3 weeks to 1 ratio.
You can set up a custom battle and set it to full real, cockpit only, no icons mode but it's best to have a group you know and password protect it otherwise you get more than a few asshats who will show up and either whine because there are no icons, TK, or ruin gameplay by calling out everyone's position and alt on open chat once they're dead.
Well I have my preferred titles for real sim stuff, but I am interested in WT for the more 'jump in and get into the action quickly' while having a reasonable simulation as opposed to the arcade model of Ace Combat or Battlefield.
If WT is just that then I am super interested!
Steer clear of Arcade Battles mode and you'll be fine.
Cool beans! I know what I will be downloading tomorrow. Any euro dudes playing?
Hopefully(WT Ground Forces) will be better than WoT.
I'm really looking forward to open beta, and if it turns out to be another pay to win fake physics and skill game I'll be extremely disappointed.

That's exactly what I play War Thunder for. It's more sim-like than World of Tanks/World of Airplanes but there are three different difficulty modes you can select to join matches in.
I tend towards the 'Arcade Mode' matches with WT when I don't want to drag out the HOTAS, TrackIR, and all that jazz. Just fly with mouse & keyboard even. Which is odd because I normally detest arcade flying games. This one still has some degree of that sim feel to it in Arcade Mode and, of course, the 'Historical Mode' for a more Sim-like flight model. The problem there is that many of the aircraft types still don't have proper flight models so you get weirdness with some of them at the higher realism modes.

If they take the same design philosophy as they did with WT Air Forces, then it should be a bit closer to a Sim than an Arcade game with fookeen 'Hit Points' like WoT. I also hope they don't add a bunch of tanks that were barely drawn up or with crazy turret upgrades & such (as in WoT) and stick closer to historical production models. If they want to add more tanks, they can progress into the Cold War era quite easily. They should do the same with the Air Forces, eventually.
War Thunder is having a 3-day event.
If you get so many kills, they'll add you to their Tank beta.

I was a bit lukewarm about the Tank beta, so I didn't apply to the closed beta test. But now that it's quickly approaching Open Beta, I may jump in now. Looking forward to checking out the Naval battle one they've been dev'ing much more.
