Title: Hitler's War
Post by: GJK on October 12, 2012, 11:54:52 AM
Any players of the old Metagaming/AH game, "Hitler's War"?  I'm a big fan of the game as it's one that is a single mapper of the full ETO that is easy to play, gives the players some room for getting "off the script" as far as historical events, yet plays out surprisingly close to history.

Well, I like the game but wanted more, so I'm working on an "Enhanced" version that doubles the map scale, doubles the units, and doubles the production levels to accommodate the extra map and units.  Here's some screeners:

I have some discussions about the project ongoing at CSW and have received some good ideas and suggestions.  I'm open to any that you all might have as well!

I loved that game when I was a kid. The original metagame was my 3rd level wargame. First came Risk, next the original Axis and Allies by Novagames, and then Hitlers War. Later my friend bought the full color version of HW with the mounted map by Avalon Hill.

For anybody interested, here's some small samples of the final map.  I spoke to a printer today, it'll cost about $40 to print it.  I'm going to playtest it first via VASSAL and if it works (and is enjoyable), then I'll print a set (working on counters next).

Nice map work.

I never played the original, but I'd be interested in seeing what you are doing.

Good luck.

Gary - why they heck does Russia need to go all the way to the Urals?  (I'm questioning the game design, not your map)
Are there counterfactuals in the game that gets the Germans 3x as deep as they historically got?
Or were the designers just filling space on a map that was printed on a specific size piece of paper?

The only reason is for the Siberian reserves which move in from the Urals, but yes, just more surface to put on what was (original design) a very tiny map.  The Soviet Union falls if Moscow, Leningrad and Stalingrad are in Axis control.
