This is apparently a problem nationwide, not just in NC. Vets deserve much better. Theres a link to a petition in the story. While she has decided to attend a different school, hopefully enough people will sign and it'll get UNC to wake the hell up and support other vets....
The "in-state tuition to illegal immigrants" was whacked by a UNC advisory board as soon the legislature started threatening action to make the decision for them. Even though the legislation is hung up, it would move pretty quickly if the UNC system reversed course on that decision.
Pembroke is a relatively new campus that is still getting their crap together on many administrative fronts. I've heard a lot of horror stories about problems with basic administrative details there, so it's not just veterans that have a problem. This is one of those cases of "don't ascribe to malice what can otherwise be explained by incompetence." It doesn't mean that they aren't wrong; it just means that they aren't out to screw with veterans. They're too dicked up to get out of their own way.
The really odd thing is that Fayetteville St apparently was willing to give her in-state status. If one UNC system school is willing to grant in-state status, why wouldn't be applicable to the other campuses? Why can't the UNC system establish a single set of criteria or a single clearinghouse for this? To me, that's the real problem that needs fixing here: a single set of veterans' criteria to establish residency status for all UNC system campuses.
