Title: Euro Truck Simulator 2
Post by: JudgeDredd on October 20, 2012, 05:40:37 AM
Had a go of the demo. Interesting - but for how long I wonder? Buy online for £24 and play immediately or £15 from Amazon?

Never played this game....but when faced with this question, I always choose the option that gets the game in my hands sooner since I am an impulse shopper:). Plus I am guessing amazon will add on shipping costs which will make the prices even closer.

Well Amazon offer 5 day shipping which is free, but that'll be next week before I had it.

If I get it, I'll likely plop for the download. I'm like you - impulse.

I'm having a few problems with my controls though. My steering wheel is old and I think showing it. around the centre it's really quite jerky. I'm feeling a new steering wheel for christmas.

Only took 48 minutes to make that decision...too funny:)  I can't say much since I am the same way.

Never tried a truck game before, maybe I'll give the demo a try.

lol - I caved so fast! I am lame!  ;D

It's better than the train simulator I bought. At least on this you can steer!

It has a career mode - so once you get enough money hauling, you buy a truck and then start your own business. You can also hire AI truckers to get your empire going. If you're impatient, you can take a loan out. From what I've seen, doing jobs for yourself may pay more than doing jobs for others...so the loan, whilst expensive to pay back (£100,000 and pay £3000 a day), it may be worth doing.

Currently I'm hauling for others.

From what I've seen so far it's alright. The environment is quite alive with decent AI vehicles...though I've had the occasional car sit at a junction because I pulled out a little bit too much and I have had to take a wide berth round it. They overtake if you're too slow.

You get varied vehicles and loads...not that the loads "matter" in that you only go from A to B with them. There's "skills" you can spend XP points on. This opens up other jobs - things like allowing you to transport dangerous goods, fragile goods, travel further. As you gain XP companies trust you and more jobs and better pay(?) head your way.

The control of the truck good though my wheel has an issue. Give Ways are tough because you have to check left and right - but it's helped by being able to press a button to centre your view forward again.

Reversing these bad boys is tough - though when you turn up you can skip parking the trailer, though you won't get full XP for it

If you damage your vehicle you can call recovery. They'll take you to a city (auto transported there) for a fee where you can repair your truck. If your load is damaged, it stays damaged. There doesn't seem to be a way to "restart" a job and if you cancel it, it's VERY expensive. I was doing a £3000 job. I came round a bend and the traffic was at a standstill - so I braked and slammed into the central reservation. I wanted to restart but couldn't and I looked at cancelling the job and it was going to cost £12000!!

I was fined £150 for not having my lights on. I haven't tried speeding yet.

It's nice to see some details specific to countries. For example the difference between the types of lights in the UK and the Netherlands (where I'm based). Also signs and it was nice to see a Speed Camera sign in the UK - very typical here nowadays AND they had the big yellow "Average Speed Limit" cameras at the side of the road. So there's a fair bit of nice region specific detail . The graphics for these kinds of games have come on massively over the years and this does look quite sexy. I have all the graphics way up and there's decent frame rates.

I haven't filled up yet, though I see petrol stations on the road and rest stops where you have to take your rests in on a long jounrey.

So - it's all quite cool.

A couple of strange things of note:
Title: Re: Euro Truck Simulator 2
Post by: JudgeDredd on October 20, 2012, 10:45:52 AM
Meant to say - what would be cool is if it was similar to Air Hauler for FSX - where you started a job where you stopped last time (or near). At present, you just go to the jobs list and if you last dropped in Sheffield and took a job from Rotterdam to Berlin, then oyou magically start at Rotterdam.

So - I went and borrowed money from the bank. 400,000. Pay back 6,000 a day for 70 days.

I didn't realise it back then, but all costs are now mine. Fuel, rest etc etc. Also when you take a job of your own, you have to DRIVE to the location. Subsequently I find myself with a 900km drive to my start destination. So it seems it is similar to Air Hauler in that you have to get to your start point.

A word though - 900km isn't ACTUALLY 900km. I don't know what they use, but 1km ticks down quite fast.

So - I now have my own garage (shed). You can upgrade it to allow other drivers. You can then buy a truck for each new driver and get drivers from agencies (if you've passed any on your travels). It costs 180,000 to upgrade your business garage to 2 extra spaces. Then you'd have to buy a truck and hire a driver. I guess then you can select a job for your AI driver and have him do it whilst you go exploring

So far seems pretty complete. Lets hope I can keep the payments up!

I messed with the Long Haul and there were a LOT of bugs and oddities. Now that one was released years ago and the Euro Trucker line was, IIRC, a better product. I'm always fascinated with these sorts of games, and for some reason I ordered Farming Simulator 2013 (I'll either really love it or really hate it). This one looks good too. I think I will try the demo.

Any French locations, or are they mostly in Germany?
Title: Re: Euro Truck Simulator 2

nothing to do with me bob.

Staggerwing - not very detailed. There are nice differences in locale between countries as I I've already mentioned. I haven't been to anywhere I'd recognise so can't say definitely. However I do know cities don't seem to be very big at all. There's enough variety there to keep it interesting.

I don't know what it is...but something has made me put more than 8 hours into it. It's obviously got something. The career is cool. Lots of things to spend XPs on, different trucks, AI drivers, expand your garage/depot, damage, rest, refuel...it's all rather intriguing. In fact my daughter is playing it just now after spending an hour watching me...and she normally wants to go on WoW!

Zulu - pretty big. France, UK, Spain, Germany, Italy, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Belgium, Switzerland. Not ALL roads are there though.

I'll post a pic later when my daughter gets off!

Ok - what I would say is anyone wanting to buy this to drive round towns they do or don't know and see what they're like - don't. At least not if that is your intention.

You never seem to "go into" a city. Not the heart of it anyway. The screenshots below are of me driving from Amsterdam to the UK. As you can see in the UK ones, the signs etc are region specific (though I did see a 60mph sign in the game in the UK but have never seen one in real life - it's National Speed Limit, 50, 40, 30 and 20 - but I've never seen 60)

But as you can see from London - it's "an outline" and noticeable...but that's it. The actual place you are delivering to is on the edge and pretty much looks like most other places...but somehow different.

Anyway - for realism of locations - no - it's not there really. Also as you can see from the first map, it's not quite as extensive as I made out. Yes Italy is there but only northern. France and Spain are not. There are a fair few No Entry signs across roads which actually act as a barrier and stop you going through them. I guess these are there for add-ons. What's strange is they aren't just at "country" borders...they seem to be within countries that you have acess to as well.

Anyway - I guess all will become clear when they release add-ons.

Like I said - I don't know what it is about the game - but it's had me playing it solid since I bought it yesterday!

Er... I know the Hundred Years War may have messed things up, but I'm fairly certain that Paris, Dijon, Lyon, Lille, Reims, and Calais are in France...  :P

Or can you not drive to those on the map?

As I suspected, it was going to be heavily Germany based (which is where the devs are, I think).

JD, do you use a special peripheral to drive (like a steering wheel) or are you content with a mouse, keyboard control (or perhaps a gamepad)?
Title: Re: Euro Truck Simulator 2
Post by: JudgeDredd on October 22, 2012, 01:14:35 AM
Yeah - sorry about saying France wasn't there. I saw a big gaping hole on the west of the map and jumped in before I saw. But clearly there's large chunks missing. I mean - taking it literally, I'd guess in "Euro Truck Simulator" you may expect ALL of France, Italy, some of Spain, Portugal etc in there.

Like I said - DLCs?

I use a FF Steering Wheel. It's got a bit of an issue around the centre of axis and is a bit of a pain - especially overtaking other trucks where there's very little room. I noticed this "jerking" in another game a month or two ago, but with wheels from £60 to £300, I'm not in a position to replace it yet. Christmas is beckoning

In the demo, my XBOX 360 gamepad controls it quite well. Now I have it on fully automatic shifting, but I'm too much of a newb to up that yet anyway. I've always wanted a steering wheel, but I can't justify it for only a couple games.

The demo is inexplicably fun. I'm not sure I like the "get fined by ghost cops" for speeding and such or the lack of visible damage (I... er... accidentally rammed another truck on the road at 60 and other than his leering disapproving face, there wasn't anything visible done. Now my engine was fairly ruined and it would comically cut out frequently while driving down the road.

The management part is what really draws me to this. I could see very much enjoying having my own transit company.

Yeah. Your use of the word "inexplicably" is very apt here. It's not  like the gameplay is visceral. It's not an ecxiting game. But even given that, I've played nothing but that since I bought it.

I now have an AI driver employed and a truck. I'm not sure how they operate as yet as I only made the deal last night.

As for fines, I've only been fined once for speeding, once for going through a red light, once for driving without my lights on (I didn't know what key to press) and loads of times for crashes.

Dissapointingly, it seems like you can only select from set logos and pictures...though I haven't looked around to see if that is indeed the case.

All I can say is so far this seems like a time pit!

I also bought this. Remember my review of Scania Truck Simulator in my blog? The driving part is exactly the same?  This just adds more trucks and company management.  A deeper game.  But it can get boring at times (like real world driving on highways).  Scania is more challenging.  It penalizes you for speeding. ETS2 strangely does not as Judge observed. Also Scania's parking requests are more challenging as well with lots of obstacles.  ETS2 parking locations are pretty standard.

I really like the "Pimp My Truck" features.  It's like Need For Speed truck version.
I also like the driver fatigue and truck maintenance aspect.

I now have two other drivers and two cheap Italian trucks. They don't make as much money as you do.  But they help in paying the bills in a small way.

Regarding the game world,  it is scaled down so that a 4 hour drive can be done in 30 minutes or less. You are not really driving into the cities as the depos are located in the outskirts (realistically) but you can see prominent buildings in the background.

They have announced that the game is a platform for DLC.  Hopefully we get to see the rest of France, Italy and other European countries.

It does fine you for speeding - but not at all often. I have been penalised once though. There must be a bug there - because the mechanism is there - it's just not seemingly fired very often.

Not only is ETS2 parking requirements standard, they also seem to be very lenient! I was actually wondering why I was able to park so lazily as I recalled having to park within a very strict area before - but that must've been when I tried Scania Truck.

In Scania Truck - are the roads more in keeping with real life then? Are the built up areas bigger? Strangely enough after 10 hours of driving, I haven't got bored of the roads...I know what you mean, but it hasn't hit me yet. I do wish there were bigger built up areas.

Maybe it simulates the presence / absence of the Police.

Scania world is fictional.  You get more detailed city streets and small towns.  In ETS2, you find yourself driving along highways most of the time.

In a nutshell, Scania is more challenging in the driving aspect. But lacks in the role playing / career aspect.  In ETS2, your career is the highlight.

I see it's made by the same people or is it just published by the same people?

If it's made by the same people, it seems weird that they would make a turck simulation (Scania) and water that down whilst adding a career?

Actually - it is the same dev - it's written all over the screens. Strange then that they took some "realism" out?
Title: Re: Euro Truck Simulator 2
Post by: jomni on October 23, 2012, 06:43:55 AM
Realism?  The driving part is the same with both games in terms of realism.  I think they made Scania more challenging because it does not have a career mode to go by.
ETS2 adds more realism in the driving part as there is now fuel management and driver fatigue.

I perefer ETS2 since it's real world with career. :)   I wouldn't recommend Scania to anyone now that ETS2 is out.  Well maybe if you'd like to practice parking at odd places. :)

It is made by the same studio.  Scania is more like a preview of ETS2 game engine and is a close-ended game.  ETS2 is promising if the DLCs actually materialize.

Bad use of realism there - by removing realism I was referring to the lack of fines, easy parking...also I didn't know at the time that it was the same studio.

I'm having a blast with ETS2 - so I'll stick with it...I would like a bit more of a challenge though (again - speeding, more difficult and strict parking, bigger built up areas).

Thanks for your thoughts on them both.

Some screens.

1. Cliffs of Dover.  You can't miss this landmark.  I'm actually based in Belgium delivering some stuff to England.  My steering wheel is on the wrong side. :)

2.  Refueling.  The game simulates fuel usage.

3.  Pimped out ride!  Truck customization is a blast.  But it's a money sucker.    I'm driving a Volvo.  The game calls it Valiant because they don't have the license.  Official brands in the game are Scania, Renault, and MAN.  Other brands are clones of real-world counterparts (Valiant = Volvo, Majestic = Mercedes Benz, DAV = DAK, Ivedo = Iveco).  Notice the "HAUL-IN-1" plate?  That's my company name which is the same as my Air Hauler company in FSX.  It sports the same color scheme (white with blue accents).

4.  Boeing 747 landing in the background during my drive to Amsterdam.  The highway (I think it's Schiphol Tunnel?) goes underneath the airport.  Nice little detail.

Here's an annoying thing - and I see it alot and sometimes it's ends with an accident and a fine....inconsistency in standard road signs.

On approach - it shows two lanes going straight on witha slip road coming off the right hand lane...
(https://www.grogheads.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1160.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fq499%2Fwmar1967%2FEuro%2520Truck%2520Simulator%2Fets2_00005-2.jpg&hash=6506e132e833547680fb80fb160d46908f663ac6)

And bingo - the right hand lane doesn't have a slip road coming off it - it IS the slip road
(https://www.grogheads.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1160.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fq499%2Fwmar1967%2FEuro%2520Truck%2520Simulator%2Fets2_00006-1.jpg&hash=b9160236a7b8811578c5bb1a2cc96359b585eb54)
This often results in having to make a quick move to the left - and sometimes ends up with you hitting something

Here is it being represented correctly in game
Again - the same sign, showing two lanes going straight ahead with a slip road coming off the right hand one...
(https://www.grogheads.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1160.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fq499%2Fwmar1967%2FEuro%2520Truck%2520Simulator%2Fets2_00008-1.jpg&hash=7c3037e4f0cda351f79ca33fbb87fc78706c6ecc)

And here it is at the junction - done correctly
(https://www.grogheads.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1160.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fq499%2Fwmar1967%2FEuro%2520Truck%2520Simulator%2Fets2_00009-3.jpg&hash=6e25553d33316c70edfcaf6540887d85bd44defb)

So - whilst I've been banging it's praises - it's not all perfect

By the way - I've been fined 3 times for speeding in the last two jobs - all 3 in the UK. There was a warning for a speed camera - I ignored it, there was a 50mph sign - I ignored it and went speeding past the camera a short while after - £550 each time!

But it seems to only ever happen if there's a speed camera about - if you're in a built up area - fill yer boots and put the pedal to the metal.
Title: Re: Euro Truck Simulator 2
Post by: son_of_montfort on October 23, 2012, 06:23:12 PM
Yeah, I think most speeding violations go along with speed cameras. But I don't know what the speed limit is on most European roads, so I usually just hit the gas until I get to 100 or so, because after that the truck begins to be hard to control.

I think I have identified something that makes this fun for me. In essence, ET2 is like the X3 series, but on land and in a truck. I always played X3 as a merchant, so most of the time I was shuttling around in space, avoiding dangers and dropping off cargo. ET2 is the same thing, but without the annoying aspect of having to fly back to home base. You can even hire AI drivers and have a garage like the space stations and AI traders in X3. Also, there is an economic management aspect that is like Port Royale and Patrician, both games I love - only here you have something more to do than just stare at the spreadsheet - you can drive the truck.

Which brings me to an interesting point... man... and updated game where you have a ship to sail cargo from port to port, while being able to be the head of a shipping company and hire AI boats would be so much fun! Like a mix between Pirates!, Port Royale, and Ship Simulator!

Or FSX and FSX Passengers http://www.fspassengers.com/

Both fantastic add ons for FSX.

If you were only buying one - it would be Air Hauler though - http://www.justflight.com/product/air-hauler-boxed. Totally tranforms a pretty dull simulation.

How does Airhauler work with addon aircraft?  Do you set the prices and things yourself?
Title: Re: Euro Truck Simulator 2
Post by: jomni on March 21, 2013, 05:33:03 AM
It has an algorithm to calculate price and cargo capacity based on the aircraft characteristics.  Sometimes it's wonky...  A 777 freighter with little cargo capacity because you can fill it up with a lot of fuel for long haul but most are relatively ok.

I've been playing this for or than 2 years already and I haven't paid off the lease of any of my planes.

Okay, I'm just going to throw this out here...

Red Ball Express -- from the makers of Euro Truck Simulator 2. A moving target in the greatest war of world history, but your loss may spell defeat for your nation. Drive for your life, and for the life of your army, in campaigns all over the world, for Axis as well as Allied nations, East Front and West Front, from northern routes bringing supplies across frozen lakes to besieged Leningrad, to southern routes in the North African campaigns -- including the renowned Allied grand logistics triumph of Normandy known as the "Red Ball Express"!

From the Roman roads of Italy and southern France, to the muddy mountain trails of Burma and the South Pacific, and back again to the nightmare of Operation Market-Garden... you'll never get rich, digging a ditch: you're in the Army now!

RED BALL EXPRESS -- drive like your life depends on it.

(Ho Chi Mihn Trail DLC coming soon.)

Product not actually available or planned, so far as I know. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

^ I don't get it   ???
Title: Re: Euro Truck Simulator 2

^ Surely there would be a market for a WW2-themed Euro Truck Simulator, where instead of contracting for profits (although maybe that was part of the experience in places...?), the player hauls food, medicine, ammo, guns, headquarter/staff equipment, small artillery, etc. on famous supply routes. There would be less sandboxing, naturally, but a significantly greater risk of being shot at, bombed, arty'd, mined, etc.; and the scenery and road conditions could vary greatly.

Aside from the Red Ball Express, which helped keep the retreating Germans on their heels after the Normandy breakout, preventing them from rallying sufficiently at various possible locations, I can think of several other even more dangerous logistic routes used by both the Axis and the Allies (although I'm more familiar with the Allies in this regard for some reason).

Note: for some random reason my mind replaced "Express" with "One" in my pitch (probably due to route numbers, Red Ball One, Red Ball Two ,etc.) Sorry. Will fix promptly. I assume that was what was causing confusion.

Well - the reference did throw me - but I was also wondering about the feasibility as I think I know what you mean.

A risk of being mined, bombed, shot at etc isn't much fun if you can't do anything about it would be my first thought.

I'm not sure - I don't know enough about the logistics in WWII to know whether such a game would be feasible and even if so - whether it would be playable.
Title: Re: Euro Truck Simulator 2

From the perspective of the driver it might be simpler than ETS2: you're expected to haul A from X to Z, maybe haul something back. (Maybe drive your truck to the staging area first.)

In some scenarios you might be allowed a choice of routes, but usually the computer would be assigning the routes (with changes made on the fly according to weather or battle conditions), acting as the logistics officers. Or the game might allow multiple "characters" (somewhat like in a strategic air power simulator, or train sim) where at one level the player is the officer in charge of routing logistics, and at another level the player is a character driving the routes.

True, it would suck not to be able to do much more than dodge a little (without running off the road too far!), but the tension level could be quite high in a "Wages of Fear"/"Sorcerer" way. (A story about mercenary truckers hauling sweaty dynamite over terrible terrain in South America.) Or in an "Ice Road Truckers" way -- being shot at is a semi-random environmental hazard like having to deal with a sleet storm. Plus the hazards would change depending on the scenario being played.

It just occurred to me that a different version of the same game would involve hauling troops (and maybe small arty pieces), not merely between logistic points, but into battle. And now we're looking at the evolution of the armored personnel carrier, which often did have defensive (and even offensive) weaponry.

You never, ever want to drive in Paris.  It is vehicular attempted murder writ large.
They don't need hand guns they have Peugeots
I still have nightmares.  In the countryside it can be most pleasant.
But they should have a DLC for French Drunk Driving Checkstop.  Closest thing I have seen to the Third Reich.
Submachineguns, dogs , everything.
I guess in a country where everybody drinks the whole day long they've gotta do something.
No Euro driving sim would be worth its salt if it didn't have happy Euro drivers pissing by the side
of the road waving cheerfully at you as you drive by.

I did exactly the same on purchasing - but as with all games I moved on.

Right here: http://www.ets2-mods.com/ (http://www.ets2-mods.com/)

To start with:

The TSM_Map_2.2 mod adds a bunch of roads and cities to the map including North Africa.
The Traffic mod V3.2 for TSM 2.2 by jennenz & kyto mod adds extra traffic to the above TSM map.
Zboe's bigger fines mods increased the fines you get for breaking speed limits and so on.

I also use a physics mod to change how the trucks run and bounce. There any many physic mods out there, but I use Realistic Physics Mod v5.0.

Lastly, look for the Project Realism mod which includes a bunch of mods like physics, weather, sounds, trailers, trucks and so on.

QuoteWe've just received a cryptic letter with some very disturbing news: Santa Claus might not be able to deliver all gifts in time on his own! We were told that Father Christmas is looking for logistic professionals who want to help out with Santa's substantial delivery backlog.

Here's more details for elves truckers who want to help out to make sure that all gifts are delivered in time: The task at hand is delivering a unique kind of cargo over the distance equal to that of SCS Software office and the North Pole. Note that this distance can be covered across multiple deliveries. Progress of the deliveries can be tracked from your World of Trucks profile[worldoftrucks.com].
