Title: Wow. I did not see this coming.
Post by: Jarhead0331 on October 21, 2012, 11:43:50 PM
...and I am absolutely thrilled.  This will far exceed anything Whirlwind Over Vietnam ever could have been.

DCS: UH-1H HUEY!!!!

Quote
DUXFORD, UK, October 7th, 2012 - The Fighter Collection and Belsimtek are proud to announce the upcoming release of DCS: UH-1H Huey - the next aircraft in the Digital Combat Simulator (DCS) series of PC combat simulations. The Huey is one of the most iconic and well-known helicopters in the world. Having seen extensive service as a transport and armed combat support helicopter during the Vietnam War, the Huey continues to serve in both military and civilian roles in many countries around the globe today.

DCS: UH-1H Huey will feature the same exacting level of modelling detail as the existing Ka-50 Black Shark, A-10C Warthog and P-51D Mustang DCS aircraft and it will be online compatible with them. Working in close partnership with U.S. based UH-1 operators and experts, The Fighter Collection and Belsimtek have leveraged their unique skills and experience to provide the most dynamic and true to life helicopter experience available on the PC.

The UH-1H will be the first helicopter of conventional design featured in the DCS series and further demonstrates the broad scope of the DCS simulation environment and its ability to introduce a wide variety of aircraft from all eras into a common simulation platform. The UH-1H will also be the first DCS aircraft to offer multiple player positions, including pilot, co-pilot, and door gunner. Like previous DCS products, the UH-1H will include a variety of difficulty options to cater to users with different levels of flight simulation experience, including "Simulation" and "Game" playing modes.

DCS: UH-1H Huey will be available for pre-purchase later this year for $39.99.

For more information, please visit: www.digitalcombatsimulator.com.

Key Features of DCS: UH-1H Huey include:

Unmatched flight physics providing the most realistic and dynamic helicopter experience on the PC.

Multiple player positions, including pilot, co-pilot, and door gunner.

Accurate and highly detailed 3D cockpit featuring six-degrees-of-freedom technology.

Interactive cockpit controls that allow players to operate systems using the mouse.

Accurate UH-1H external 3D model, liveries, and weapons.

Detailed modelling of the UH-1H instruments, weapons, engine, radios, fuel, electrical, and hydraulic systems.

Developed in close cooperation with real UH-1 operators.

Missions that include transport and combat support operations.

Training that includes interactive and video lessons.

Multiplayer coop mode for crew members of the same helicopter under development for a later update.

Apparently, this is not being developed by ED, but by a third-party developer out of Belorussia, Belsimtek. Hopefully, this won't cause a letdown.

I'm not overly stoked about it.

Granted it's in the best hands - but it really depends on how it's released whether I buy it or not...and at present I'm in the NOT camp.

If sufficient missions/campaigns are released - and given the direction DCS World is meant to be heading - it could be a very valuable addition...but I'll wait and see on this one.

Sweet.

Personally, I've always had a soft spot for Cobras. But a Huey could be tons of fun.

A huey?  I'm unimpressed.

I'd rather it be a Blackhawk than Huey.   But preferably an american gunship as I don't really care for hauling stuff (sorry to those truck driver simmers here  :P ).

:-[

Oh well.. if I get the itch there's still Comanche Hokum and the big mod for it.

You can fly the Cobra in Arma 2 LB.

As for the Huey.  Multi-player door-gunner sounds like fun.  Finally, something from DCS that I might be able to pull off without breaking my brain.

Man! Whatta bunch of nay-sayers!  The Huey is THE iconic helicopter from 'Nam.  Although blasting sh*te with a Cobra might be fun for a while, the Huey and the Chinook were the real game-changers for air-mobile ops and even air artillery.

I'm planning to upgrade my 'puter this winter.  This would be a stunning addition to my flight-sim library (now woefully out of date).

Thanks Bob & SDR.

I'm still trying to figure out how to load my M-4 in ARMA II. It may be a while before I'm piloting a Cobra...

The Cobra in ARMA is a bit tough to get the hang of but it is fun.  I am a big fan of flying around in the helicopters in BF3, not that I am any good at it.  I'll have to keep an eye on this game.  There is just something about flying a helicopter...

Well - I'm saying in the DCS world it could be a good thing - but it all depends on the world. I could also be a lame duck. I really don't want to fly around in a Huey if a) there's nothing to do and b) there are A-10s and Mig-21s and Hinds kicking around!

Chickenhawk has to be my all time favourite book. So fantastically raw and just a superb read. I read it in The Falklands in 1985 and lost my copy. Bought it again from a car boot sale in 1990 and read it again. Lent it to my brother in law who had it a few years and when I asked for it he had mislaid it...he bought me a new copy and I read it again. Normally books I read go in the loft - but it's actually been rotated under my pile of books o read and is about 7 down at present and working it's way back up the top.

I especially loved tying it in with We Were Soldiers - I can't really remember the details, but I'm sure he was flying a top knob around looking at an LZ and it turned out it was LZ X-Ray from We Were Soldiers fame!! He had been flying around Hal Moore I believe.

^Great! Thanks for the heads up on that.  If that is the one I'm thinking of, it is actually a really good sim...

I reviewed that sim for a site I was running at the time. It wasn't bad, but immersion wasn't it's strong suit - it felt a little too barren .........

Anyone read Chickenhawk by Bob Mason? He flew one of the Huey's that took supplies into X-Ray under fire. 'Tis a good book.

On the nose though - awesome book. Read it several times and it's still fresh when you read it again.

I was (at one time) trying to get his follow up book...but it cost a fair whack and I couldn't get it in the UK

Actually - it's on Amazon and it's called Back in the World. In the UK (now) it's only £17 - buying now!

Awesome JD, I have never read that either, although, like you, I have read Chickenhawk several times over the years.

I seem to remember once reading a book by a guy who flew Cobra's as well, but can I bugger-as-like recall the name of the the book.

FWIW...I actually liked Vietnam Medevac.  It was done by the same guys who did the Search and Rescue / Coastal Heroes games.  The flight model is neither arcade-ish nor is it hi-fi...it's sort of "tricky" (means...you gotta spend a bit of time to figure out how to fly, hover and land) and things like weather conditions (wind, rain) landing conditions (narrow landing areas, heaving decks on ships) make rescues a little bit more challenging than "land - recover - rinse - repeat".

It also (a-historically for a med-evac copter, I believe) has a door-gunner position which allows you to blast away at vietcong.  I can't remember if ground fire is at all effective, but it's still kinda fun to hover your bird on the edge of a ville, and blast away.

Also IIRC there were a variety of missions ("ass and trash", rescue downed pilots / stranded units, and med-evac) that added a least some variety...but some of the missions were impossible to finish.  I recall doing one "rescue the sailors from the sinking ship in the tropical storm" missions a few dozen times until I finally got it right.

Not bad for $7 but don't be expecting great shakes, either.
