typically when you easterners get a good hurricane/tropical storm running up the east coast it brings warm air to us western folk..... thanks... with snow already on the ground I was dreading winter... this should suck all the cold air away.... thanks for sucking!

Not looking forward to this.  The people around here are going crazy about it after the snow storm and Irene last year.  I've got my supplies and as the weekend rolls on I'll be getting the wife and I prepared.  I like to live by the "prepare for the worst hope for the best" saying.  I just hope the media is over-hyping this.  I think alot of people just have 'Chicken Little syndrome.'

People are losing it around here too. But with generally good reason. There are still bridges around here that have not been rebuilt since last year. And this year is different because I am on-call for work and may be needed to get emergency messages out. If my cable goes out (it will) I will have to drive through the storm to get to my physical office. Not looking forward to that either. Going to spend tomorrow battening down the hatches, putting stuff away, etc.

That sucks, here is hoping you somehow manage to keep cable.

I've got a couple minor bridges around me that haven't been repaired either.  This summer the utilities went around and trimmed around the power lines but from what I've seen they did a half way job.  Still plenty of branches able to come down on the lines.

Thankfully after last years mess my land lady got a generator that I can use to keep the cellar from flooding and destroying the furnace again.

Well, that's all she wrote.  Governor Cuomo has activated State military assets.  A WARNO has been issued and I'll be reporting for duty sometime Saturday night or early Sunday morning. 

I'll be around for most of tomorrow, but after that, you may not see me until I come off of State active duty.  Good luck to all of you boys in the danger zone.

Last year's storms are the reason we got our generator. It's been tested a few times already.

Losing cable will be the least of my worries come Monday and a possible obligatory trek an hour south to work during a state of insanity/emergency.

I'll probably spend tomorrow rounding up the extension cords and setting up the generator. It's only 2200 watts so I'm hoping for mild eve temps since the furnace is hard wired into the lines. I'd need to hook up the generator right to the house wiring. Anyone ever make a 'suicide extension cord' (two male ends)? I'm wondering if I may need to go that route if things go south hereabouts. Don't worry, I'll pull the main first. ;)

JH don't get me wrong, I respect the Guard and appreciate what you guys do but I hope ya'll have more sense then these fools in NJ during the hurricane last year.

Coastal areas from Florida to Maine will feel some effects, mostly from the hurricane part, he said, and the other parts of the storm will reach inland from North Carolina northward.


Once the hurricane part of the storm hits, "it will get broader. It won't be as intense, but its effects will be spread over a very large area," the National Hurricane Center's chief hurricane specialist, James Franklin, said Thursday.


One of the more messy aspects of the expected storm is that it just won't leave. The worst of it should peak early Tuesday, but it will stretch into midweek, forecasters say. Weather may start clearing in the mid-Atlantic the day after Halloween and Nov. 2 in the Northeast, Cisco said.


"It's almost a weeklong, five-day, six-day event," Cisco said Thursday from NOAA's northern storm forecast center in College Park, Md. "It's going to be a widespread serious storm."


With every hour, meteorologists are getting more confident that this storm is going to be bad and they're able to focus their forecasts more.


The New York area could see around 5 inches of rain during the storm, while there could be snow southwest of where it comes inland, Cisco said. That could mean snow in eastern Ohio, southwestern Pennsylvania, western Virginia, and the Shenandoah Mountains, he said.


Both private and federal meteorologists are calling this a storm that will likely go down in the history books.


"We don't have many modern precedents for what the models are suggesting," Cisco said.


It is likely to hit during a full moon when tides are near their highest, increasing coastal flooding potential, NOAA forecasts warn. And with some trees still leafy and the potential for snow, power outages could last to Election Day, some meteorologists fear.

That National Guard clip is unreal. Once my paperwork (finally) goes through I hope that's not in the cards for me. Star - even a weaker hurricane like Irene or an early season snowstorm around here wreaks havoc. I wasn't kidding when I said that my property looked like Verdun 1916 last Halloween. It was seriously f'd up.

It's looking like Jersey/MBDC is the likely landfall. That means that Long Island (JH's Redoubt) and Southern New England (my Shoreline Shack) are gonna catch the North (hard) side of the Storm's edge. It's gonna hover over the Tristate area and then cut PA in half after which it'll work it's way up along the Hudson through the center of NY State (Gus' Green Acres).

This could get interesting... again.

I am in northwest NJ so I'll be right in the center of it as well.  I just went to the gas station to fill up the car and fill some gas cans for the generator.  The place was mobbed and the attendant said they had run out earlier in the day and just recieved a new load of gas about an hour ago and were going to run out before the night was over.

I'm done with interesting.

Stopped by Romney local HQ to say hello and pick up a yard sign (we live in a cul-de-sac - about six people will see it, but the fam wanted it).

Sitting around a bunch of tables scrunched together were about ten folks and their phones. I laughed and asked them (only half in jest) if they would take me off their call list if I promised to vote for Romney. I got some seriously blank looks.

Good stuff. Hopefully if the power goes out y'all can think about this story and laugh, because apparently the phone call barrage will continue for another ten days.

My weather stations are all predicting landfall at, or near, Atlantic City, New Jersey.
The Northeast Quadrant of the storm spin will be the strongest, which means norther New Jersey, New York City, Long Island and points north.

Not a native Floridian,  but spent fifteen years in SW FLA.  Originally from the NE.  Not sure it's the hurricane that will be the worst, but the consequences for the tens of millions and the interruption of services of all kinds that will be the worst.

JH, it's the same in FLA for a hurricane.  At any one point, there are tourists and part timers who have never experienced a hurricane.  I'm not suggesting it's an easy thing to ride out, but a Cat 1 like Sandy is pretty low grade.  The worst of it will be the byproducts.  So, everyone keep calm, use your head and stay cool.  You'll ride this bad boy out and make it out the other side.

I've got a bunch of five gallon tanks in my garage ready to go. Got about 20 gallons in fuel as a stand-by for the generator or to bug out were it ever needed. Can store up to 40 gallons. Preparation needs to take place more than 24 hours out. Also got about 12 gallons of water sitting around just in case. Batteries I buy at Sam's in big packs. Got fire wood for heat. I'm sure there are some things I could do to top off if needed, but we're always prepared. Biggest issue is remembering to rotate out the old stock periodically and replace it with fresh stuffz.

Without putting too fine a point on it, most of those folks are city slickers whose idea of a natural disaster is Whole Foods running out of organic kashi.

I think some of y'all are missing the point of what sustained 60 mph winds and high amounts of precipitation will mean on the ground. I know that when the power goes off (not if) the challenges this will present for the average folk will be be .... challenging.

I feel for those who need regular medical service - like dialysis patients and elderly - this will be a stressful/bad time.

I'm good with about everything except gas. I have 5 gal in the garage and a full tank (20 gal)in the van but that's it. The stations around here are just about empty though I think most will get a refill tonight. The lines are nuts. I may try to head out early tomorrow if needed to fill up a few 2 gal tanks I just found under some junk in the garage since I'd hate to have to start siphoning off gas from the van to the generator if I'm out of power more than a few days. I've got enough meds for my son to last a month and my bbq tank is full. I've got enough food and about 10 gal of drinking water though we don't usually lose water here as the local water co has huge pressure tanks just 1/2 mile from my house. One never knows though. :(

Re: winds- not much I can do about it myself. The water is a concern since my street ends at the local boat launch. Luckily my end is much higher than that end. It's also part of a sheltered harbor as well as extensive marshlands nearby to catch part of any sudden surge. The local State Park's beaches are probably toast again though. I really like that place too. :'(

Boudreaux has just eaten. He and Max are now sitting in his mom's lap, resting his head on his toy. They don't appear too worried. Probably because they know I picked up some beef jerky this afternoon just in case I got extra hungry during the storm.

My family's big coup was getting a generator running off the natural gas line so I didn't have to stock up on diesel, etc.

Well...I'm still here.  Have not been deployed yet.  Not sure what the hell they're waiting for.

Woke up this morning to the heavy winds picking up.  NJ is in a state of emergency, schools around here are closed, my wife just got a call telling her that her work is close but I still have to drive to work this morning.   >:(

It looks like the heavy rains and sustained winds will start after noon today around here.

^ my law office is open too...as long as there is electricity.  This makes me really angry because its dangerous.  Your employees are worried about their homes and their families, you need to make them feel compelled to go to work in this?  Its absurd. 

Against my better judgment I turned on the tv to see that the storm is actually strengthening. It's breezy here and drizzly but nothing ridiculous yet.

JH if bridges, tunnels and mass transit are shut down, how do you report?

Max is the dachshund. He kills rats and snakes.

Boudreaux is a Maltese-Poodle mix. He is smart as a whip. All three of our dogs are smart, but Boudreaux is not to be underestimated.

Last night we had steady rain for hours. No flooding that I could see, but a good, steady rain.

Today it's calm and cloudy. School was cancelled today and so far I would say it's not necessary. But I think the hammer is about to drop. The kids are figuring school will be cancelled tomorrow, too. Snow is expected in the mountains, and we're on the edge of those mountains. I'm expecting it will hit the valley to our west pretty hard. Whether it hits us or not is an interesting question. I'm thinking not, but one never knows. It's 48 here now. If we drop by ten degrees and the weather is right, that's a formula for colossal snowfall.

Jarhead, I just saw that the NYSE is closed today. Your boss is officially an idiot.

The Hurricane still hasn't made the expected sharp left turn towards the west... but I expect it will. The track is now NWN. The speed of the actual hurricane has picked up from a lazy 7mph to about 18. That cold front trough in the midwest is calling it....

Sandy has claimed the tall ship HMS Bounty - 14 rescued but 2 crew members are missing. Say a prayer for them.

As far as more pleasant weather-related items: the Weather Channel has a lot of hawtness. My favorite is Kelly Cass who comes from the area I live in. She is not a small woman but she is damn MILFy.

Breezy the capacity of the reservoir is about 1B gallons. They typically flood the area below during storms and have gotten into some legal trouble because of Hurricane Irene last year and the planned flooding they did. They note that the reservoir and facility are a power production facility, not a flood mitigation facility.

Sometimes they just can't win.

The water is starting to come up my street now. The houses down at the low end are probably under a foot or two. It's probably gonna rise a few more feet before it's done, assuming the storm surge isn't as epic as is being speculated on. If it does... well, it's a good thing I don't have a basement. The wind is getting pretty fierce as well. Lost power for an hour but it's back. For how many minutes/hours?  :-\

I definitely learned that lesson in the past few months. My employer is by far the biggest employer in the area that is suing them too. Talk about biting the hand that feeds.

No they're actually the towns that all of the employees (union and corporate) live in, immediately surrounding the facility. Rural towns that don't have any industry at all except for this power project, 99% farms.

That's what my employer said. Our general counsel said they are just suing to see exactly what, if anything, they can score. Trying to find money anywhere they can in bad economic times and all that.

If they are claiming damages from flooding ... good luck with that .... especially if the operating licence for the dam is older than the buildings/infrastructure that got/gets damaged

That's exactly what they are claiming. And you will be hard pressed to find anything near the river that got flooded.  It's basically just wilderness :/

I left work and just got home.  My office is still friggin open and there are still morons there working...I swear, I hate lawyers. There are people with families at home.  Anyway, still have power.  Let's see how long that lasts.  I have a dead tree that is raining debris all over my roof and yard.  Its the one thing I'm most scared of.  If that tree comes down, my kitchen is gone and my basement is potentially blocked.  God...if you protect my house, I promise I'll remove that tree...Its getting pretty wild out here on the Island.  God speed to all in the zone.

Quick update from my place in NW NJ. 

Went to work this morning while my wife stayed home.  By noon I got a call from her saying the wind was bad and the power was out.  Then around 250pm I get a frantic call from her that a couple big trees fell and clipped the back of the house we are renting.  At that point I told my boss, screw it I am going home this isn't worth me dying when this gets worse and my wife needs me. 

So I head home, the roads are covered in small debris and there are a couple trees on the power lines already.  One line had snap but back into the woods so it was safe to go by.  On the secondary road that leads to my house there was two big trees down on half the road that I was able to get around.  I got home around 3:45 to the power still off.  My wife had finally settled down but the wind was really bad. 

In the back of the house there are 2 huge trees down but no major damage to the house just shingles etc.  I was only out there a couple mins as it probably is not safe as there are alot of other trees around. The power just came on, who knows for how long.  The wind gust are getting worse and more sustained and the roof and siding is taking a pounding from debris.

We still got a ways to go and there are still alot of trees left to come down.  I'll get pictures up when this is all over.

We're now supposed to get 1" of snow over night here in NW Ohio.

Scratch that, they're now saying up to 20ft waves on Lake Erie tonight and tomorrow.

Power is out here on the CT Shoreline. The wind gusts are epic. One of my trees just calved off about a 1/4 of itself and took out several sections of fence in my front yard. Another huge branch fell down off of one of my giant pine trees and landed next to the debris. So far the kids are handling it bette that i thought they would. I'm posting from my iPhone. Still have 74% left until I need to venture out to the van to charge it.

Still here...they are saying the worst is behind us.  For once the weather people were right.  This storm is the most significant event to hit the NYC area since 9/11.  Somehow, miraculously, I still have power...1,000,000 other people on Long Island are not as lucky.  I may still lose it, as winds are still sustained over 40 mph, gusts close to 60 mph.  Tree is still standing!

Thanks to those of you who called/texted.  It was extremely uplifting to hear from you guys.

Hey guy thanks for the concern.  I am at the inlaws right now they just got power this evening, they live in Newton NJ about 20mins from my wife and I.  We still don't have power at home and came to spend the night here since it is supposet to get down in the 30s tonight.  The power company says the power won't be on until maybe early next week.

Saw a shot on TV at 10:00 with lines up to ten deep of people still trying to catch a bus to get to work. If this doesn't spark a revolution in telecommuting and flex time, I don't know what would. We already *ought* to be on that kind of schedule, but sometimes folks cling to the old ways for the sake of tradition. Hopefully they'll fix that soon. I cannot imagine the impact on lost productivity. It's going to be enormous.

I find it strange, given NY had storms the last 2 years, that infrastructure has not been hardened to storms. It pretty plain there will be more most years going forward so what is the problem?

1.  Those of us living in the interior don't want them moving in :P

2.  It wouldn't be so bad if they built homes that were desigend to withstand these strong storms.  I saw a saw talking about someone on the gulf coast that build a concrete house with curved walls after their stick built was destroyed in a storm.  Hasn't had to rebuild since then.  Just need to get people to spend a few more dollars up front and keep thinking they're going to get handouts later.

They could be sitting on >50 year old infrastructure that should have been fixed/upgraded long ago. Now they can say big bad storm destroyed everything give us x millions in bailout for all new construction. If you don't people will not get power. Or they get ductape fixed power until the next one.

I'm not sure I agree with public companies.  I'd rather implement harsh laws against private companies that put people in danger such as not upgrading antiquated systems and placing people in a situation with no power during the cold season.

Consider why you want people's lives subject to the desires of for profit enterprises. There are many for profit enterprises that make products that save lives. I used to work at one. The products were high quality. Its a different issue.

Back in about The early 90s I lived in Bridgeport for a few months. It was... interesting. I was crashing at a friend's place. He was renting it from a prominent businessman with strong local ties. Especially one of the local " ...is not a gang... is a club" type organizations. As I said... Interesting.

So still no power in my neck of the woods but thanfully we are bunking at the inlaws tonight and I got a little online time.  I finally saw the first utility truck in the area today but they are still working on the main feeder lines and substations.  75% of the gas stations in the area are still without power and the ones that do have power have several mile long lines of cars and people waiting for gas for their cars and generators.  The power company says they may have our power restored by next Wed. the 7th.  I am really hoping it comes sooner then that as the are also reporting some possible weather on the 6th and 7th.

I do hope it's not that long Tent. My kids and I are still without power (latest estimate is pretty much the same, 11/5 to 11/6) but we are somewhat fortunate that there is 'city' water here (actually a private company but they've done a fine job) and the local gas stations are mostly up and running. My neighborhood is connected to the main drag by only a few streets and I think the Power Company has written us off as too small to cause them any grief so they are busy fixing the lines to the places that will keep the First Selectman off their backs.

This being without power for a week after every major storm just sucks. Does anyone have either a diesel or Propane/Natural gas generator wired into their home? How long will a propane tank last when powering a 6000 watt to 8000 watt generator? I'm thinking one of those BBQ style ones.

Natural gas is generally pumped in by the city utilities. As long as the infrastructure is in place, you'll have electricity.

I have a small gasoline generator. Five gallons runs it twelve hours.

I am in the same boat.  Not enough people on my road to be high on the power companies priority list.  The main road that my road is off of hows power now but that contains a main line they are trying to restore to some larger populated and business areas.

Thankfully we are at the in-laws.  They are in the county seat proper so they got power fairly quickly.  It also doesn't hurt that they aren't to far from the hospital.

^We have power now. The generator worked great though, a great investment.

It would have to be propane. There are no gas lines hereabouts that I know of. I have a small generator now but it won't run the furnace or hot water heater or clothes dryer. I have two small oil-filled radiator heaters in my kids' bedrooms set to low and that just about maxes out the generator. As a result I have to fill it about every 4 hours or so and if I don't? Well, lets say that I am on some kind of blacklist compiled by the God of Small Engines and must spend at least an hour or two getting anything without electric start to, well, ... start. I'm thinking of having a standby generator set up wired directly into the house's wiring. A diesel or propane generator is the way to go. Gasoline is unstable, it breaks down if sitting a long time. Sure, you can buy fuel stabilizer bottles but that makes it even more expensive. Having trouble starting small engines after a long time is usually due to what has become "bad gas".


Propane is nice in that you can run your stove off it as well as the BBQ. Its easy to buy a big tank as well. We had one on our acreage in Texas when I was a kid. The fill up 1x per year.

as cool as cooking with gas is, I would never buy a house with a gas line.

my dream house would be at least 20 feet about sea level.  18 ince poured concrete walls with rebar in a open square plan like a roman villa.  all windows and doors would have recessed slid down shutters.  the rood would be nothing but solar panels and all
rain run off would be collected in a tank and filtered.

Good taste. Its too damn cold up here for the open square otherwise I'd go for the same.

thats easy.  my house in Sarasota was 37 feet above sea level.

Where did you build 37 feet above sea level in Sarasota?!?!  Must have been east county on the other side of 75.  There was no place over 12 feet in Charlotte County.

Back at the inlaws tonight, still no power at home.  Today Gov. Christie instituted an even/odd gas rationing system for NJ based on the last number of your license plate.  Hopefully it will help ease some of the troubles at the pumps until they can get the power back on everywhere as well as a steady supply of gas. 

I am blessed to have a place to come tonight that is warm and has power.  It is suppose to get chilly around here overnight and alot are still without power or in shelters.

I'm glad to hear you and the Wife are still safe and secure. My prayers go out to your friends and neighbors who may be less fortunate. I hope their situation improves soon.

Looks like Old Myakka and Bee Ridge are the highest points.  There's a lot of 7, 10, 13, 16 Feet spots on that list.  Either way, I was always more worried about a hurricanes ability to pummel us than any storm surge.

Just about 10 days later and we finally got power back this evening around 5pm EST.  I would like to complain about how long it took to get it back but there are still alot of people without power and lots who lost everything including their homes, so I won't.

Thanks, we lost about half of the stuff in the freezer and were able to eat the rest.  Thankfully since we knew this was coming we didn't have much in it to begin with.

Our house is off camera to the left.  To the right you can see the landlady's garage with a branch sticking out of the roof. If you were to inside the garage you could see the other end of the branch sticking through the roof and dry wall a good three feet inside the garage ceiling.  That tree had to come down with some force to do that.  It also mangled part of the railing to the left of the garage.

Here you can see the back of the house we are renting.  The two windows on the left are in the bedroom with the left most window right next to where I sleep.  If you look closely in the middle of the picture you can see some of the j-channel hanging in front of the middle window as well as a puncture in the siding right above it.  That is where one of trees fell and bounce off the side of the house.

This is what started in all.  At the base of the stumps you can see the huge root ball that came up with this stand of trees as it fell over in the wind, taking all the trees in front of it with it.



All it all we were very lucky that nothing landed on the house.  In the pictures you can see all the other trees surrounding the house that could have easily fallen and down serious damage while we were inside.  Compared to alot of people we got off easy and for that I am very thankful.

Sitting out a major storm in a house surrounded by trees is pretty scarey. Over the years we have taken down at least 6 trees in our backyard to minimize the risk. Glad to hear that you made out ok!

Thanks guys.   I didn't get any pictures but a house down the road a bit had three fall on their roof.  One of them even sheared off the top of their stone chimney on the way down.  Needless to say the roof needs to be replaced.


On another note, the storm that blew through here last night was not as bad as expect, at least in my area.  Down near the city and shore it was worse considering the people still without power and homes.  There is still some strong wind today so hopefully no trees weakened by Sandy will get pushed over.

It's a good program to protect you against unexpected floods in unexpected places. They can happen unpredictably. But there are other places where they're pretty much certain.
