Title: Legends of Pegasus -- more 4x goodness
Post by: Martok on February 17, 2012, 07:37:19 AM
I'm admittedly not quite as excited about this one as StarDrive, but it still looks like it could have potential.  (Besides, as our site's self-appointed space-strategy guru, it is my solemn duty to ramble on aimlessly about inform you of all news in my favorite genre. :P )

Anyway, there's some new goings-on with this upcoming 4x title:  First off, Legends of Pegasus (finally!) has its own website (http://legendsofpegasus.com/us/).

In addition, developer Kalypso has put out a new trailer (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g_K7VeePIyo&feature=youtu.be).  Unfortunately, it's monumentally unimpressive (at least in terms of generating interest), but it does look pretty good -- apparently no CGI was used to make it, just the regular game engine.

Also (I meant to mention this last week, but I forgot), Adam Solo from SpaceSector conducted an interview (http://www.spacesector.com/blog/2012/02/interview-with-novacore-studios-on-legends-of-pegasus/) with the devs.  A fair bit of good info can be found there.

For those of us who care about such things, I feel compelled to add a note of caution:  The game's digital version -- and quite possibly the boxed copy as well (although this isn't confirmed yet) -- is going to require Steam.

I really like the looks of this. Now, which will be released first...Pegasus or StarDrive? I see Pegasus is due out in June.

I don't think that's a firm release date, just a very loose "guess" at this point.

Kalypso has said they very much want to avoid the problems that occurred with the release of Sword of the Stars 2, and as such haven't committed to a firm release date yet.

That being said, I would say we're probably looking at an early-summer release here.  However, that's just a half-educated guess on my part (based largely on comments of questionable reliability that have been made in the game's forum).

As for StarDrive, I believe Dan is still shooting for June.  As always, though, time will tell!

Off topic (sort of) but does anyone have any thoughts on Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellions. The first game with all microexpansions was pretty slick but lacked depth. I wonder if that will change with Rebellions.

I already know I'm gonna pass on that one.

I liked Sins as a concept, but in practice it felt like a pretty standard RTS title -- there was very little "4x" gaming IMHO.  Sins Rebellions looks like more of the same, just with improved visuals and a few extras thrown in (such as the new "Titans").  ::)

Amazon has the availability date as June 30 for Pegasus. I believe anything Amazon says.

^  In their SpaceSector interview, Kalypso specifically said that was a placeholder date only.  Sucker.

Dammit. Well if StarDrive comes out first then it doesn't matter.

I suspect it'll be close either way, since StarDrive is due out in June (barring delays).

Just four more months (hopefully!)...

Holy crap!  Apparently there's been a whole slew of previews for this game in the last three weeks.  See this link (http://forum.kalypsomedia.com/showthread.php?tid=13700&pid=121101#pid121101).

Some of those screenshots have me hooked...as long as the devs take their time and release a finished game.

The ACG preview had me hooked when they compared the storyline to Battlestar Galactica.

I forget in which thread it was, but one of the Kalypso guys over on the forums already stated that they want to be sure the game is playable out of the box, and that there was no way they would allow it to be released in a state similar to that of Sword of the Stars 2.  (The one good thing out of that whole fiasco is that it appears to have served as a cautionary tale for other game developers.)

I have to admit, the lore they're building for LoP is starting to intrigue me a little.  I may even play the storyline campaign, which is something I don't usually do in strategy games.

You're preaching to the choir.  As it is, I was only able to read two of those previews myself before I had to go to bed!

Post by: Martok on February 24, 2012, 05:11:21 PM
Wow, there's actually quite a bit of useful/cool info in those previews that I read.  Where to start?

Ships will look physically different depending on what components you give them (so you should be able differentiate between a gunship and an escort carrier); subsequently, civilian ships will look decidedly different from military vessels.  Similarly, a planet's appearance will change over time as you terraform it, becoming more "verdant" later on in the game.

In addition to constructing buildings right on a colony's surface, you can also construct stuff in orbit -- especially planetary defenses and shipbuilding facilities...and they will appear in any space combat around a planet.

Graphic-wise, you can apparently zoom in during battles to the point that you can watch your ships' point-defense guns recoil as they take out enemy missiles/torpedoes/etc.

Star systems will be connected via the equivalent of "star lanes", allowing players to establish strategic choke points throughout their empire.

When setting up a new game, you will choose an Ancestry and a Doctrine for your race.  Apparently, this will affect (to at least some degree) what kind of technologies you have access to.

Not much about multiplayer is known yet.  However, supposedly there will be a 2-player coop mode (besides the usual "kill everyone else" mode).  In addition, there's a "kill the Emperor" mode, where if your "Avatar" (who gives major bonuses to your empire) is killed, you lose the game.

That's all I can remember off the top of my head, but there's other good stuff in those previews as well.  So if any of what I just mentioned interests you, go check 'em out (if you haven't already)!

Yeah, Adam Solo has done a pretty good job with his site, and I give major props to his efforts thus far.

Two other decent sites dedicated to space games are Space Game Junkie (http://www.spacegamejunkie.com/#4) and Space Sim Central (http://spacesimcentral.com/) (although SpaceSector (http://www.spacesector.com/) remains my favorite, since it focuses a little more on strategy games than the other two).

Speaking of SpaceSector and Legends of Pegasus, it looks like Adam found a new batch of screenshots (http://www.spacesector.com/blog/2012/02/legends-of-pegasus-screens-new/) for the game.

Most of the shots appear to showcase the ship design, and orbital facilities as they appear in combat.

I'm particularly interested by the latter, and not just because it looks cool.  With shipyards and other orbital facilities now included as part of the battlefield, I'm hoping that raids will be a viable tactic:  Instead of gathering all the military assets necessary for a full-scale planetary invasion, you could instead choose to conduct a hit-and-run attack, where the main goal is to damage a colony's shipbuilding capability.  It could be one method for an empire on the defensive (or without a large army) to keep an enemy at bay and/or off balance while they work to regroup for a major offensive.

I believe Kalypso said they're probably looking at a summer release, so sometime in Q3 2012.  Of course, they also said they want to make sure the game didn't suffer the same fate as Sword of the Stars 2, so it's entirely possible we'll see that release window gets pushed back.

An update on this:

Adam Solo over at SpaceSector has reported (http://www.spacesector.com/blog/2012/05/legends-of-pegasus-pushed-back-to-the-summer/) the game's release date has been pushed back to July 31st.  Given that I was already under the impression LoP wasn't going to be out til this summer anyway, my disappointment is minimal.

A site called NeoGmr has post a fairly substantial (and substantive) interview (http://www.neogamr.net/news/e3-2012-we-chat-with-novacore-studios-about-legends-of-pegasus) with the devs.  Some good stuff there for anyone else following the game.

It's still on track for a summer release, by the way.  Sounds like they're pretty much entirely in the polishing and bug-fixing stage now.

E3 coverage is starting to come in:  Another (shorter) article (http://www.gamingnexus.com/FullNews/E3-2012-Legends-of-Pegasus-%28Impressions%29/Item26963.aspx), this one by Gaming Nexus.

Not a whole lot of new info in this one, although it does seem to have a little more emphasis on the single-player campaign.  While 4x titles have historically not done very well with these, I still find myself increasingly intrigued despite that fact.

Update:  Looks like we have a release date (http://forum.kalypsomedia.com/showthread.php?tid=15190&pid=137264#pid137264)!  Apparently, the game is coming out in most of Europe August 10, and here in the States on August 14.  Can't wait!

Just a heads up that it is available for pre-order on Steam (http://store.steampowered.com/app/205590/) (available Aug 10th?)...15% off knocks it down to ~$34. (The Steam Special Edition includes the Steam exclusive Mini-DLC Conqueror. All player ships will have a martial, camouflage look available and playable for all human and alien ships.)

I like the looks of LoP, but the real-time battles may hold me back.  Anyone know if there will be a demo?

For what it's worth, the game will require Steam.  While those familiar with my rants views will know I'm obviously not overjoyed by that fact, it at least will likely mean you don't have to worry about any issues with creating a "Kalypso account".

So long as the battles last more than five seconds, don't feel like a click-fest, and are actually somewhat tactical in nature (I'm looking at *you* Armada 2526!), I'll be quite content.  From what Kalypso has said of the battles so far, I think I'll likely enjoy them.

Unfortunately, it sounds like there won't be a demo.  :(

I don't see how creating some forum account with Kalypso even approaches the level of signing up for Steam and being forced to load their adware client to run their games.

I'd much rather sign up a forum & support account, and not be forced into logging in (you don't have to) or running some 3rd party software (there is none) in order to play the game in question.   The Kalypso thing is trivial compared to other requirements.

Now.. if you are talking limited online installations, ad clients, or most other hair-brained DRM then I can see why someone would be averse.   Does this have limited installations?

At least as far as Disciples 3: Resurrection is concerned, the Kalypso Launcher must be running before you can play.

I railed against Steam for years before finally giving in, and it's still the last place I look when buying a game, but if getting LoP there means not having to put up with Kalypso crap then I'm in.  I'll be grateful for any confirmation when you chaps buy the game! :D

I sincerely hope not!  Even setting aside what my personal disappointment would be, the genre has already suffered enough from bad releases of major titles like Master of Orion 3 and Sword of the Stars 2

I have insomnia and am an early riser -between 3-4AM, typically, during the week. My wife gets up a 5:30, so I can get in an hour or so before she does.  Since I work from home I can get in an hour after she leaves and an hour before she gets home.  She naps on the weekend, so I can get 2-3 hours Saturday and Sunday afternoons if we have nothing planned

After kids go to bed, Wifey puts on some type of kitchen improvement/house hunting/design challenge show....and I just slinking into the office for some gaming. We are both happy. After 11 years of marraige, you realise its ok to not always do stuff together.

Sometimes you have to put some quality time in the bank for future withdrawals so I can't get away with it every night...but 3-4 a week.

Is anyone giving it a go right now?
I've played it for a few minutes just to check the menus and options.

So far I've noticed a very annoying lack of tooltips or explanations of what various options do, Skirmish only allowing 2 players (you and an AI), no Local Co-Op or MP whatsoever (contrary to what Steam advertised), and no manual either to help negate the lack of in-game information.

ITs not looking good guys.  Supposedly released with a lot of game breaking bugs, ie. broken save/load system.  Also, single-player turns are actually timed!!!  i hear this "feature" is being removed in the first patch that is already complete.

The devs seem to be supporting it though, so stay tuned.

A 6MB patch was released via Steam right now.

UPDATE: Still not enough tooltips, or manual.
Lackluster tutorial.
Overheats GPU.
Multiplayer is so far only 1v1 as well.
Skirmish games cannot actually be started.
Voices disappear after 2nd turn of first mission.
Found a bug that caused the camera to constantly move in a single direction without any way of stopping it.
At the same time also ended up bringing up some Developer/Debugger menu that gave me the option to reload textures and such :P

Forgot to mention, as far as Port royale 3 anyway... I think that's the exact same Kalypso launcher that was in Patrician 4 too.   I was able to close it out without logging in, and still play.  Can't recall if there was a trick to it or not but found out about it on a forum when I looked around.  *shrug*

But there's always a chance they closed up that hidden option with every new release or update.  :-\

+1  I just played for about an hour and after all the bitching in the forums I'm very pleasantly surprised.  It has a very pleasing aesthetic and I really like the way the game snaps from turn-based to RTS once combat is initiated.  The space battles look pretty good too, especially floating wreckage and debris.  It has a few rough edges for sure.  There are some noticeable bugs, such as  few graphical anomalies and one instance where I was unable to move two ships to complete a task until I saved, exited the game and reloaded.  Other than that, with continued support, I'm quite hopeful that it will be an enjoyable game.

Just goes to show...don't "always" listen to the loudest whiners.

I didn't say the game wasn't any good.
But it currently has some very serious bugs and issues that need to be sorted out before it can really be enjoyable (or playable in my case).

Sorry Tpek!  I seriously was not referring to you.  I was more pointing to many of the comments in the official forum and in a few other websites I've hit.  I trust your opinions and know if you're gripping, you have a reason.  Apologies...

Hmmm...may have to pull the trigger. Jarhead, is the campaign really linear or is there some freedom?

Hard to say. It is broken down by race, with each race having separate chapters or "acts."  Looks like you have to play through each race and "act" sequentially.  I'm still in the first act, which so far feels like a rather general tutorial.  Its slowly adding game elements...so this feels artificially linear.  However, I'm just getting to the point where I've been tasked with expanding my first colony, so i have a a feeeling it will open up more and become much more "sandbox-like" over the next few turns...you know, where my mission is build up my fleet and economy, but I am given the freedom to do it dynamically.

Out of curiousity, can you issue orders while paused during combat?

Well, it looks like you can give move and attack orders while paused.  Sometimes.  ;)

I can't even play it. AVG insists that the LOP.exe is malware and sends it to the quarantine vault.

Farmer, can't you add it to AVG's exceptions list?  Alternatively, a virus scanner that misbehaves isn't worth having; may I suggest switching to Microsoft's Security Essentials or whatever it's called?

Maybe your copy of avg has already played it.

I did add an exception for LOP but then Steam itself would not run and considering the numerous problems the game is reported to have, I thought I would sit on the sidelines for a few weeks and see if the developer cleaned the program up.

Man...when Steam and a game don't play nice it's ugly. Sorry to hear that.

Thanks for the impressions so far guys.  Sounds like I'll probably want to wait a bit before purchasing, but I am still very much intending to pick it up before too long.

From what Novacore has said, I get the impression it's rather linear.  Which makes a certain amount of sense, since it's mission/episode-based.

On the other hand, at least in LoP, you'll bring your existing fleet and technology with you from the previous episode.  None of that GalCiv2 nonsense where you had to start from scratch at the beginning of every mission!

I gave my son Paul, my computer game collection. 5 large moving boxes worth. He's now moving into mature residents at the University of Alberta to get his MA in Film studies. (he can get away with this because his fiance' is a nurse.)  I will now re inherit my collection.

(long winded explanation as to what I will do next)

PLAY HOMEWORLD again!!!!

SpaceSector (http://www.spacesector.com/blog/2012/08/legends-of-pegasus-review/) and Gamespot (http://www.gamespot.com/legends-of-pegasus/reviews/legends-of-pegasus-review-6392217/) both have their reviews up.  It's definitely not looking good at the moment.
