Title: Shrapnel Games Sale - Are You Kidding?
Post by: tgb on November 07, 2012, 10:22:43 AM
While checking out the sale I came across this (http://www.shrapnelgames.com/Shrapnel_Games/AA/AA_page.html).

Here's my favorite part:

QuoteWhere we are with All American: The 82nd Airbone in Normandy.
Status:       Development
Remaining:    ♦    Rework of multiplayer to allow compatibility with Vista.
♦    Voices are being re-recorded after changes to scripts.
   ♦    Re-evaluating art for maps.
   ♦    Changing 3 missions.
Beta:       No projection
Release:       Projected for 2009

Last update: August 2008.

That ranks right down there with Combined Arms: WWII (Formerly Battlefields) at Matrix.  Here'e the oldest post date i could find.

"Battlefields 2/24 Update! - 2/24/2003 10:22:29 PM"

They can look forward to celebrating the 10-year anniversary of no game next February.     ::)

Yes, but Matrix doesn't take pre-orders.  I didn't try, but I'm guessing I could have put $$ down on a copy of the Shrapnel title.

Its roots don't go quite back to DOS do they? This would put it in the Win 98/ME era, right?

I think you're in the ballpark on that one LB. I remember requesting a review copy in 2000, I believe....

I did an interview with Tim Brooks around that time as well.... Interesting guy with some neat ideas, unfortunately Shrapnel seemed to be less active as time progressed...

Production is all but ceased there from what I hear. I hope I'm wrong.

I won a contest to have my face and voice appear as one of the characters in the game.  That was back in '98 or '99.

Well, I guess that explains it then...

You mean that group of peasants with torches and pitchforks outside my window aren't my entourage?

Then if the game is ever released, you'd end up as one of those people who "communicate" with a video recording of their 15 years younger selves :P

At the current pace of development he may be the first geriatric paratrooper on active duty.

Back to the original sale - Dominions 3 is an excellent game.  Amazingly deep.  Runs on a ton of systems.  Graphics are primitive.

I'm still not clear on something:  Is this for the digital-download version only?

Yeah, but you have to use a 28.8 baud modem to download it and you're only allowed to play on a buff coloured 486 with DOS 6.22.

A 28.8? Do you know how fast that is? It's like twice the speed of a fax machine!

Well forget that then.  I was only interested if I could get a physical copy; I want that 300-page manual!

I couldn't resist at this (still high IMO) price! It comes with a PDF file of the manual. I'll put the manual on the Kindle for now and maybe print it later. God knows when I'll get around to playing it though.  ::)
