Title: Lordz, Matrix and Slitherine 'under attack'
Post by: Keunert on November 15, 2012, 08:48:16 AM
Looks like an idiot is creating many accounts to give their games bad ratings. wouldn't be surprised if there is a connection with the latest strangeness in the wargaming community.
maybe our niche hobby needs a deep breath and a good beer:

That's not right.

Shouldn't be too difficult to get the IPs of the person(s) doing it. I hope they catch them.

What a shame. The Lordz have been pouring their hearts and souls into CTGW for years, only to have some moron with a grudge come along and potentially impact sales to the uninformed public.

I agree it is wrong!.. But on the other hand, the Manufacturers shouldn't be posting 10's in the user area!.. I understand they were probably doing it to offset the bad reviews from the bad user.. but I think the better thing to do would be to get Metacritic to look into it first..

Note: I want and probably will buy this game due to Slick's AAR and other posts here  ;D .. Just wanted to finish my Comander Europe at War Gold game first (figure I might not go back to it once I get this game).

Sounds like some verifiable nutjob on the 'net.

The M.O. sounds like it could be a bot, however, since it was just copy&pasting bad reviews from elsewhere.  It'd have to be a more intricately created bot than I've ever seen, though.

So either way some nutter, with entirely too much time to spread his lunacy,  has spent a LOT of time doing this or creating a bot that does it.   It's disgusting.

Just one word, the guy is NUTS.

QuoteSomeone has been creating many dummy accounts and posting false reviews. They have created accounts for Slitherine, Matrix and the Lordz and are pretending to be us and posting false positive reviews. These reviews have been copied and pasted from other CTGW reviews. At least they are reviews of the the right game...

These are the false developer accounts that were created:
http://www.metacritic.com/user/MatrixGames2012
http://www.metacritic.com/user/SlitherineGames
http://www.metacritic.com/user/LordzGames

These accounts were not set up by us.

Then they have created many more accounts giving very bad reviews. These reviews are copied and pasted from completely different games. You can tell because they talk about features not in the game. For example there are no doors & dungeons in Commander the Great War! :)

Commander The Great War, wasn't even on my radar (sorry), but some other Grogz threads brought me to this one and through following the link to your website, I now know about the game (and it seems good) - I will probably buy it (sometimes bad publicity is still good publicity).

Cheers

Anyone who has spent any time at the Wargamer forums over the past 5 years, knows that there are some real batshit crazies out there. Something like this would be right up their alley.

"What evil lurks in the hearts of men, women, kids, infants, teenagers, or is this culprit not even human"?

Kidding aside, this is intolerable to gamers everywhere. Game reviews are often major contributors influencing purchasing or not-purchasing decisions. It's wise to read a breadth of reviews from many sources...IGN, Gamespot, Metacritc, GameRankings, Amazon, applicable forums, friends, gamers skilled/interested in the genre, etc. in determining the "quality" of a game. I've been burnt most often in the purchase of a ("dog"...sorry Fido) when relying on only one/few unbalanced, non-specific, or shallow reviews.

Checking up on Metacritic to see if I could add "abuse" votes to the reviews, and I couldn't find a listing for CTGW at all. Has MC taken the reviews down already?

I am stupid or not getting something about what happened.

Isn't this about some ahole posing as different people and posting bad reviews on a site where anyone can sign up and post a review?

If that is the case besides finding him and playing four-walled handball what can be done legally about it?

I hope they find him and put an end to his behavior but I do not see what recourse companies have against things like this.

We're not exactly sure who it is. Given that little can be done.

However, it seems clear to the community across multiple sites that this is the work of one guy or a small group of guys with a grudge and maybe a screw loose. Other than the distraction (amusement?) of people talking about it, the impact is zero.

I'm sorry he/she/they feel wronged but this isn't the way to make your case.

I'd hope that they would expose whomever it was to our fine community, if it was someone who has been throwing a tizzy by doing something as childish as this.   Being shunned by your peers isn't fun, even on the internet, I imagine.

This is nothing compared to some of the things I've seen.  I used to be in the Gone Gold community, which was pretty huge back in the day.  It had its share of trolls.  Well, one day it suddenly ceased to exist (long story) and one of its less savoury members followed some of us to a new community.  Every couple of months he'd create a new account and start sending extremely vile pictures via PM to people.  Completely at random, it seemed.  I had one once, even though I can't remember ever talking to the guy.

What was weird was that he persisted for ages.  Obviously he'd get banned each time, but before long he'd be back with another account.  That guy must have been quite disturbed.

I doubt it's just some random wacko.  I'm inclined to believe it's someone who felt slighted by Slitherine recently and already ignited an internet firestorm about the offense across multiple forums.  And yes feel free to read between the lines.

Rich LaPorte. I used to communicate with him often. He was a retired NYPD cop who had been shot on duty and confined to a wheelchair, his health was very poor and deteriorated to the point that he closed Gone Gold. There was some controversy over his closing the site so abruptly, but most of the flack came from trolls. He has completely dropped out of sight, to the best of my knowledge.

Yeah, I heard that Rich had some form of cancer, but that he actually was - at least a few years ago - doing better. I loved that site but never went to the forums. I was in college and thought I was too busy for forums, imagine that mental process...  ;)

I'm surprised you done go over to Octopus Overlords, Steelie (as if you need another forum). A lot of the Gone Gold refugees founded that place and hang out there. The Console Gold group (who got really burned when Rich flipped the switch abruptly) formed Gaming Trend.

At WG we tried to pick up one of his writers to help keep the dream alive but he wasn't interested in moving and the column just ceased.
