I'd like to take this opportunity to welcome China to 1941. They have managed to learn how to successfully land an aircraft on an aircraft carrier.

If one restricts themselves to Jet aircraft then we're all the way up to... 1944 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMS_Ocean_(R68)). It was a Sea Venom flown by none other than the legendary Eric Brown (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eric_%22Winkle%22_Brown).

Carriers are pretty complicated beasts.
Landing and taking off are more challenging than from a land base, but these aren't the hardest part.
Let's ask about arresting gear for landing these supersonic beasts.

I can't tell you how many flight deck guys were seriously hurt off Yankee Station in the late 60s.
With the constant air attacks, the arresting gear wasn't always properly checked and maintained. When one of those steel cables snaps or breaks loose, it can cut a man in half.
And we've been working with these things since the 1920s.
I would not want to be on the flight decks of any Chinese carriers for the forseeable future.

Bes I worked with a guy who was on the Enterprise in the late 60s and he was on board during the massive fire the ship had. He said despite the fire the thing that frightened him the most the whole time he was assigned to the Enterprise was the catapult and arrestor wires. He saw a lot or injuries like you describe above.

Assuming they knew where (or even what) Pearl Harbor was. And that didn't suddenly happen this semester. I've mentioned before that I have a friend who found himself mentioning WW2 at work when one of his female coworkers looked puzzled for a moment and then said "Oh! I know! That's the one when all the sailors were dancing with the nurses, right?" The woman in question was (and probably still is) a law clerk.

A few years ago, in a column about the Astros late-season charge for the playoffs, a columnist made a reference to "Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?" and the article comments went
ballistic over the 'inaccuracy' of the article. It seems that everyone was in a hurry to correct the writer, but no one got the "Animal House" reference...

one of my best friends growing up served on the Sara. besides the usual sea stories hes got a nice scar on his forehead from walking into a aim-9 at night. day or night a carrier flight deck is the ultimate I will kill you if I can job. those lobster boys have it easy.
