Title: FarCry 3
Post by: Tpek on November 29, 2012, 11:15:52 AM
You Americans can relax about the fact that this time you get it later...
This game is problematic.
And I mean it.
It nearly burns my GPU down to cinders after a short while of gameplay past the first tutorial part, and from reading on the game's forum,
it would seem others are having similar or other kinds of trouble with it. GPU crashes and driver corruptions.

Hopefully by the time you get it, Ubisoft would bother to actually patch those bugs (it already released a day-1 patch which failed to do much).

Odd...RPS raved about it and I don't think this issue was mentioned in the review.

Yeah, first I have heard of it. I'm torn between this and COD:BLOPS2. On one hand FC3 has a long and open-world SP experience and a crappy MP experience. O. The other COD:BLOPS2 has a short and on-rails (blah) SP experience and an awesome MP experience.

The review at Gamespy mentioned crashes when running the game in DX11.

This is going to sound totally pansy, but I'm also a little concerned with the subject matter of FC3. I don't mind violent games, per se, but a violent game that tracks a constant descent into madness and murder by the main character might be a little over-the-line with me.

Don't play Spec Ops: The Line then.

I tried playing again and messing with the graphics settings. Didn't help at all, still 90C.
And now I am smelling a bit of a burnt smell from the case. :(

Your card fan may have gone out and the high draw of the game "told" you about it by increasing the heat significantly. Run with the case off to see if the fan is still turning.

Also, switch FC3 to DX9 mode until the patch corrects the problem.

I don't plan on it...  ;) JH, what are your thoughts on COD:BLOPS2?

I also realize that I still haven't booted up Dishonored, which may be the best solution to my dilemma.

I think I might try the DX9 option.

I downloaded a new version of Speedfan 4.47 and even the newest beta driver for my Geforce 480 to try it if I get desperate.
I also started checking on the pricing for the 680 in case I do end up burning mine :P

DX9 didn't work.
Still overheats the GPU.
Heck, it still heats it quite up even when on the menu.
This is insane.

Are you using nVidia? I've heard the 310 drivers are necessary. You might check the fan on the GPU, because few users are reporting this issue. Hope you can get it resolved.

It's just that I am wary of installing Beta drivers, and to to mention those that don't have WHQL certificates.

I've done it before and had few problems. It can be much worse than overheating, right?

Well, I'll try this tomorrow.
Hopefully it will make the game playable.
Title: Re: FarCry 3

Well, taking advice from the official forum I've yet to update to the beta drivers and instead manually edited the profile.xml file of the game,
and had it capped at 30FPS. This indeed greatly reduced the heat to ~78-79C. Seems the idiots who made this game made the same mistake as Blizzard did with SC2,
they forgot to cap the FPS and instead allowed it to go freely, so the GPU burns itself when trying to get ridiculously high FPS.

Unfortunately now I can't play the game because the Far Cry 3 server is down (yeah, it's a Ubisoft title... the internet connection requiring kind).

This makes me much less excited to eventually pick this one up.  Why do they continue to require single player games to be server dependent?

I just ordered an up-to-date blinged out Falcon MachV for Christmas (looking ahead to someday going back to school to be an architect when I retire, so wanted a system that would feasibly run things like Shade and Vue Infinite)...

...and no way will I buy FC3 for it.

Oh, I'm sure it'll run great--Falcons are designed to handle heat-buildup on the most taxing programs--but no way am I going to buy a game I have to keep connected to a server to run it.

So, FC3 goes to my PS3 game list.

I think they changed it a bit. It still has to connect at the start of every session, but that's it. Still not great, but better than it requiring a constant connection throughout every minute played that UPlay used before.

Really enjoying this game so far even though I suck at it.  The environment seems alive.  For example, I was swimming in a river to avoid the baddies when I came across a friendly bystander standing on the edge of the river.  Couldn't believe what I witnessed next.  Out of the corner of my eye I see an alligator jump out of the water and drag the person away to their death.....little things like this make it interesting since I was not expecting it:)

You need to connect to the internet to activate the game - once activated you can switch uPlay into offline mode and as far as I'm aware it doesn't require a connection after the install.

The game is superb. There are lots of things to do. Ok - a teeny bit samey - but not enough that it bothers me. Jump in and out of the story as you please.

I have also noticed my GPU is running at 98% load and >90 degrees celcius! There was one time I was running it so long at such a high temperature that the graphics all abstracted on me - I had to exit and let my system cool down.

The 3.10 drivers from nVidia (which are now WHQL by the way) may have worked for my GPU...this graph was taken after playing for 25 minutes - and seems to be 30 degrees less than it was hitting previously.

Also - this kind of shows my GPU is perhaps my bottleneck as it runs at amost 100% load (though you can't see it in this shot) and the CPUs are around 70%

I can feel a 480 or a 560 next year as a temporary upgrade :-)

But the whole of the UK is getting alot of rain. Floods everywhere due to (apparently) the ground being sodden, people paving their front gardens and farmers not clearing out ditches...among many other things.

Far Cry 3 is a great game with fantastic graphics, play, immersion, and AI (animals and people). Don't care for the over-abundance of swearing and foul language though. Be careful if young ones around.

Played the boxed version from Dec 7 until Dec 24 withlout any problems, glitches, lock-ups or anything of the like. But now game screen lock-ups every 15 minutes. It appears others are having similar problems. How extensive I don't know.

Here are possible Dec 24 th computer occurrences that may have caused the problem:

1. Windows updated my Win 7 64bit files.
2. Upon recommendation, I updated my Nvidia Geforce 560 GPU drivers (I'm running 2 cards SLI)
3. Ubisoft Uplay updated Far Cry 3 before I could launch it.

Here are some of the things I've done or thought of to resolve the problem...all with no luck so far.

1. Thinking it was a GPU heating problem I blew out and vaccumed the dust from the GPU's and computer. Also, turned up the GPU fan speeds to 100% from 65C on using free download MSI AfterBurner software.
2. Tried rolling-back Nvidia drivers to pre-Dec 24th condition but couldn't seem to get this to work.
3. Tried several Restore System points but my less-than-one year old home built computer has never let me recover to a previous point. MS tech support couldn't help me on the system restore problem either (lame).
4. Visited several forums and tried some reader suggestions but most were just guesses at what is wrong.
5. Looked for solutions from Ubisoft but they aren't doing much about the numerous reported problems.

So now, what was fantastic FarCry 3 play has turned into frustration and dismay. OS, drivers, and game patch updates are supposed to improve play and performace and not render things unstable and/or unuseable. IF IT AIN'T BROKE DON'T FIX IT.

That's a bummer about the reported problems....luckily so far I haven't seen any of those issues.  I do notice it does work the graphics card hard, but no lockups or overheating problems so far....keeping my fingers crossed.

Okay. It appears my 15 minute play then lock-up issue must be heat related. My homemade computer has tons of fans but evidently not blowing right on the GPU's (even though the GPU fans are running at 100% after 65c).

I attached a 92mm Vantec Tornado to the side port on the case. It blows more air than any fan for it's size but it's outrageously noisy...I'm talking vacuum cleaner loud. I played for 45 minutes without any problems. Next I replaced the Tornado with a larger and somewhat quieter Sunon fan and played for 2 hours with no problems. However, the fan noise is still more than my head and ears should handle.

Several years ago I bought the two above fans because they were number 1 and 2 in blowing the greatest amount of air. The noise has prevented me from using them in computer case since though.

Now I'll be looking for a quieter fan that blows a good amount of air. Will check Newegg fan specs to purchase one that is strong with lower decibel noise.

It's too bad the Nvidia GPU driver and/or Uplay Far Cry 3 updates overheat my GPU's contributing/causing 15 minute shutdowns or I wouldn't need the extra fan.

Just so you know, I even tried using Direct X9 for the game with lower graphical settings but it made no difference...still 15 minute play and lock-ups. So that's why I tampered with the fan experiment. I'm not saying adding fans to blow on your GPU's is the solution for all but it seems to work for me right now and hope it continues.

Come to think of it I have a fan speed/shutoff controller somewhere in my box of electrical junk I might tinker with, too.

I repeat again how amazing Far Cry 3 is with it's beauty and play. The flora and fauna are fantastic. Even the Komodo Dragons have intricate detail down to the dotted rough texture of the skin (I hate them though...I was healthy once but took the teeth to the knee).

I did report above that I noticed a considerable decrease in GPU temperature after I installed the latest 3.10 drivers from nVidia.

I'm pretty sure that is still the case...although GPU and fans are running full pelt my temperature is around 65-70 where it was close to 100 before.

I do only have a GTX460 and I'm obviously not running everything up high - but the drivers did seem to help my temperature.

^ Teeth to the knee.

Ha!

I remember when Far Cry 2 was released someone did a test with it to see how far they could push the graphics. They couldn't find a limit. Apparently the game scales its detail to the power of the video card and, as best they could tell, there is no upper limit. The graphics will take as much as you can feed them. I'm assuming that Far Cry 3 hasn't changed that formula.

I've been tempted to get this game  - especially seeing how there is NOTHING of interest to me that is being released in the next few months  >:( - but these heat issues concern me.  Has a patch been released?  Is the game now safe to play?  ;D

I didn't know it wasn't safe to play.

I had one instance of graphic corruption which required an exit...and I put that down to heat but I've had no issues since and that was when I first got the game.

To me it seems solid and is a fantastic game.

Okay, thanks!

What did you think of the story?  I wasn't initially interested in this game because of the setting - college boys fighting pirates on a jungle island just isn't on my top 10 list for game settings  ;D - but if there is a Heart of Darkness angle to it, I might be able to overcome that objection.

How are the open world aspects?  Does it feel open in a Skyrim "you can go anywhere, do anything" sort of way, or more of a Borderlands "you can go anywhere but there are only different quests to be had" sort of game?
Title: Re: FarCry 3
Post by: JudgeDredd on January 17, 2013, 06:00:05 PM
I love the story. It gripped me straight out the traps.

As for open world, there are animals to kill to make different bags for carrying more kit, there's more little race, shoot, hunt tasks. It's open world in that you can go wherever you like on the island and in the surrounding water.

You can jump in and out of the story as and when you please. I'd say it's not as big as Skyrim...but more akin to that game than I remember Borderlands being.

Overall - easily my fav pirchase and I'm getting many, many hours of play out of it.

I just put in about two hours and...wow!  What a game!  It reminds me of an odd mix of Deus Ex (for the sneaking elements), Arma 2 (for the exploration and combat), and GTA IV (for the general criminal hijinks).  Quite the mix!

I knew I was going to like this game when I was driving along a road and some pirates in a jeep were coming the other way.  As we passed, I heard one of them swear some obscenity and jam on the breaks.  Then they swung their jeep around and starting chasing me!  What followed was quite the unexpected car chase - again, something out of GTA.  I was swerving and skidding all over the place trying to lose them.   ;D  I finally gave them the quick slip by pulling behind a small hill.  I expected the AI to quit, but no - they doubled back to continue to look for me!  So I decided to fight.  I got out of the jeep and took aim over the hood of my car.  As they pulled up, I opened fire, shattering their windshield and causing the pirate jeep to go out of control and slam into a rock outcropping!  I think I must have killed the driver because he never left the jeep, but his cohort did.  I dropped him next.   8)  When I went over to the body to loot it, I saw that the game actually puts bullet holes where you hit the bad guys!  Wasn't expecting that...or the bullet holes in the jeep, either!

Wow...what a game.  I think I can actually forgive Ubisoft for the many, many missteps of the last two years.   ;D

Thanks so much for the rec!  You didn't steer me wrong!  :-*

Cool.

It is a great agme. I think I must have 30 or more hours on it, I'm only part way through the story and I've only uncovered maybe half of the island! And it's not got tiring.

It's"wee" bit samey - but different enough it doesn't bother you. By that I mean you take out enemy camps. And that is through the game - but the camps get more difficult. Reinforcements turnign up, more enemies, enemies with bullet proof vests, dogs, snipers, chargers, molotov cocktail geezers...they just ramp it up enough so that even though you are doing the same thing you done from the start game, it requires some different thinking - especially if you want the extra XPs by taking the camp quietly.

For people still worried about heating etc...all I can say is what I said before - I had one graphics glitch early on and nothing since. My fans are going full pelt when I play it and the temp is up at the 70's (and that's down from when I first checked the game out where it was running in the 90s)

I am NOT playing the game on full graphics mind either.

I only have
Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit
8GB Memory (can't remember make - but not expensive)
Intel Quad Core 2.33GHz CPU
nVidia GTX460 768MB Graphics card

So not a fast machine by any stretch of the imagination - and the game still looks great

The following is something of a pompous opinion piece with excessive verbiage on Far Cry 3  :), but I think once you clear the clutter away, the author has the right of it:

I Hate That I Love 'Far Cry 3' (http://motherboard.vice.com/blog/i-hate-that-i-love-far-cry-3)

QuoteThis is a game I would have every intention of never playing. If you had told me any of this premise ahead of time, I would have gotten on my indie high horse and sneered safely in the arms of my anti-Ebertian, post-gamer ideals.

...

And while I had every intention of hating Jason Brody, I, too, lost my person to the overwhelming circumstance of his journey.

...

Put another way, Far Cry 3 is the Toxic Avenger of videogames. It is sophmoric and atrocious, and yet it is the best representation of this young medium for the entirety of 2012, and potentially long-tailing into 2013, perhaps because it also represents us. It is worthy of cult status, if not as a technical achievement then as the only videogame to master such a dark form of empathy. That I could hate something so strongly and be so completely absorbed into it only wets my appetite for the coming realization of videogame’s storytelling potential as the most immersive artform of this century.

I still can't get a feel for how much is scripted and how much is random.  If the majority of these events were completely random, FC3 is a most remarkable game.

Great game.  Playing it on Xbox though but I want to post my opinion of it here.

What everyone else has said: Great story, great characters, plausible circumstances abound (you start off as some scared meek kid but as you get the hang of killing bad guys your character actually does turn into an efficient blood thirsty killing machine), weapons variety which leads me to...ability to kill a thousand different ways.

The environment is on par with Skyrim in that you wish you could be there and experience it.  Yesterday after capturing another pirate outpost it started to rain in game.  I literally stopped what I was doing and just panned the camera around taking in the beauty and tranquility of rain in a jungle.

If you're familiar with Ghost Recon: Future Soldier, you will like how you can customize weapons, stealth kill, and track enemies as it was clear to me that Ubisoft borrowed these concepts from Ghost.  Nice touch.

^ what he said and more

I can't get enough of the story.

The characters are amazingly well done. Vaas is a very believable nutter - Buck - well, he's genius, CIA guy - awesome, sexy chic - very sexy, and Dennis is a believable "nice" guy in a bad world.

One thing I don't like (but it's necessary evil) is the useless interactions. Right mouse, left mouse, right mouse, left mouse to crawl through a gap or something or mash the Space key when fighting someone. It seems console game makers think console players have ADHD and need that kind of useless interaction with the game.

Like I said though - it's a necessary evil when getting a console port to a PC...and when they're this good - I really can't mind too much.

Nothing - but NOTHING - kills a game for me quicker than making me play, replay and replay a mission.

I've got to a part in the game that I just can't seem to get by - I've played the mission more than a couple of dozen times and I am TOTALLY bored with playing it.

Sure this is frustration - but it's just one of those missions - I can't stand them - where there's just no let up.

A while back there was a game - the name escapes me - which had difficult missions - but if you couldn't do it in your current state - after a few tries it gave you full health back...and enabled you to complete the mission.

But - and I NEVER thought I'd say this - I've put the game down and will likely not touch it for a week or so.

Bad UBI.

^^ Is there a way to adjust difficulty in-game or before loading a save?

One game I recall giving the player a break after multiple attempts was the first Brothers In Arms (I haven't played the others yet). "War isn't fair, but sometimes a game should be. Would you like all your team to be healed?", if you're having trouble getting past a mission on multiple reloads. (Like a console game, the missions can't be saved just anywhere, so if you fail you have to replay the whole mission from the start.)

Not that this has helped me, as BIA1 is still one of my games on the list to-finish. ;) There's a mission in a town where I'm zig-zagging past several Axis roadblocks that I just cannot for the life of me get to the end of without dying. Close to the end, but I'm shot by the final defenders after I pop out of cover to try anything against them. (Assuming I survive that far. Which I usually don't. Nor does most of my team. Not so bad as it sounds in their case since they heal by the next mission regardless.)

When I go back to finish it, I'll doubtless take the difficulty down to easy, but I seem to recall that being permanent if ever chosen and I didn't want to lose any of the extras that unlock at normal level, mostly having to do with the production diary. Normally I wouldn't care, but I like being amazed at how hard the devs worked at reproducing the real-life situations the missions are based on, with period and contemporary photos of the area from which they reconstructed mission areas and cutscenes.

^ That was the game. I remember the phrase.

I'm not sure in Far Cry 3. There was another game I remember you could adjust the difficulty before loading a mission. I'll try that.

Judge, without giving away any spoilers, how far along are you in the game?  I myself have got only 4 or 5 missions to go before I complete the story so I may be able to help you if you are at a point earlier than where I am at now.

in spec ops:the line if you keep failing a mission it will ask if you would like to lower the difficulty. i was surprised when it asked me that. first time i had seen a game tell me i suck!

I am finally getting through the game myself.  But am getting very frustrated with the missions...they take you from open world to bottleneck rail arcade game too many times.  The fact that in some of the missions you really can't do anything other than "mash" the space bar...and if I don't do it just right, are stuck and can't advance, just feels stupid.  So the game takes you from having to think your way through a complex compound attack....to then hanging on your ability to "mash" keys on time like in guitar hero.

Yes, a great game is nearly ruined by this stuff. I am half-way through and about to put the game down for good.

^ stick with it - after my initial bitch, the game turned out superb. I do love games with a story though and I actually found jumping in and out of the story refreshing...open world to rails to open world.

Quite samey I suppose would be one of my very few criticisms - but the story kept me going and I completed it.

I also quite enjoyed Far Cry 3. A few of the story missions are obnoxious (That stupid  >:( stealth nonsense sneaking underground...HATED IT), but the game overall was a lot of fun.

Besides, where else can you experience your best laid plans falling apart because the guard dogs at the outpost piss off a bear who decides to attack you?

Agreed.  It is a fun game.  The 'Have I ever told you the definition of insanity?' speech is alone worth the price of admission.

Definitely a good speech and the last main mission was just pure fun to play.
