Title: Shat to Attend Enterprise Retirement
Post by: mirth on November 29, 2012, 02:27:27 PM
Not sure if this is cool or dumb. OTOH, maybe he'll steal her and save Spock.

I don't care much about the Star Trek tie in, but Enterprise "is" the USN to me.  I can't think of the USN without one, I really hate naming carriers after Presidents.   Enterprise, Lexington, Yorktown, Saratoga, Hornet, Wasp, Essex - Those are aircraft carriers!

I'd agree to a compromise: the person whom the Carrier is named after has to have been dead at least 75 years. That will keep the naming option from being a mere political perk.

I'd love to see a carrier named for Halsey, rather than just a cruiser or destroyer.

false alarm

http://news.yahoo.com/uss-enterprise-retirement-not-shatner-112546395.html

QuoteWilliam Shatner is not attending the USS Enterprise's retirement, after all.
A publicist for the actor tells The Virginian-Pilot (http://bit.ly/TvNp1K) the former commander of the fictional starship Enterprise on TV's "Star Trek" is abandoning plans to attend the ceremony Saturday at Norfolk Naval Station. He announced earlier he would be attending.
The publicist tells the newspaper Shatner had to rework his schedule.
The Enterprise returned to Norfolk from its final deployment earlier this month. Saturday's inactivation will be its last public ceremony.

thats probably for the best.  if he showed up the media pays attention to him and not the people, or the ship, who really matter.

Hopefully, somebody called Checkov - it would be in bad taste if he attended and Shatner didn't !  ;)

I'm glad he's skipping it. It seemed like a frivolous connection.

Aw.  That's too bad he's not going.  Although Walter Koenig would be even better, really.  :D

Given the Enterprise had a small but important role in Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, I don't think it's inappropriate.  (Actually, it was the USS Ranger standing in for the Enterprise, which was out to sea the time, but still!)

Cool. If they keep this up there may actually be a starship named USS Enterprise one day. :)
