Title: EIA?
Post by: Longdan on November 29, 2012, 06:20:13 PM
Christmas sale at Matrix/Slitherine again and I am noticing
there is not much I ain't bought yet.  Would anyone care to
offer for me some thoughts on Empires In Arms?  I loved the boardgame
back in the last century but I do not know how it would translate.
thanks

Hi Longdan, this was my review when the game was first released.  I was only somewhat lukewarm about it.  To be fair, I understand the game has gone through significant patching and is better than when released.

For me...Crown of Glory: EE stays on my hard drive while EIA doesn't.  I just find CofG:EE to be more intuitive.  Also (and this may have been fixed with patching), EIA only had one very long scenario when it was released, so didn't suit my play-style well.

Every once in while I think about installing it again, for another go round....maybe I'll do that over the holidays.

One interesting and highly redeeming feature of EIA however, is that it allows combat resolution outside of the game.  So you can use it a "campaign engine" if you want.  Fight the battles in other software like one of the Tiller titles, or Histwar, or if you are a nappy mini player, get the little guys out.

Or check out:  Micro Napoleonics....play on a small tabletop with paper miniature formations....works pretty well.  Also very reasonable price wise: the rules and expansion for about 12 bucks.

I've been sitting on the fence on this one for about 3 years now, but I am definitely getting it this time around.

I was watching this with interest in the run up to release and on release - and popped back occasionally to view progress...

The community was pretty hostile - to the developers and to anyone who disagreed with their take. The developer (from what I read) kept his cool under enormous pressure from extremely volatile and vocal community and always seemed to be working towards what they wanted - but there were splits in the community at the time about what was best, what was right and what was wrong.

It was entertaining "train wreck" reading - but if you were part of the community I would expect you would soon feel extremely burdened.

But - if there are people over there and still posting - then they must be hard core followers and lovers of the game...anyone new (on release) I think would've left long ago.

There was talk that the multiplayer aspect didn't suit the game - and that it would take years to finish a game from start to finish...though iirc a group of people had finished a game (how long they too escapes me)

This has just re-ignited my interest in how things are going though.

(I wasn't just over there for the kick ass posts - I actually was interested in the game)
