I have a question for any/all Steam experts here 8)
So I see something I want on Steam. Its Train Simulator 2013. Right now it includes the base game, plus 3 DLC routes. Thing is, I already own Train Simulator 2013 and Steam tells me that when I click on the package. What I actually want is just the 3 DLCs since they are much cheaper in this package than buying them separately. My question: can I purchase the Train Simulator 2013 plus 3 DLC routes package, keep/download the 3 DLC routes and then gift/sell the extra Train Simulator 2013 base game code?? Thanks...
Hmmm. Dunno.
I suggest you first try to gift your existing base Train Sim. I doubt Steam will allow you to split the purchase, but that's a guess.
I agree. But I think the only way you may be able to do it is uninstall your current T13 and reinstall the 'new' version, although that can be a problem if you have a lot of downloaded content, in which case you could save your 'local' folder (I use a flashdrive for that).
I've run all versions of Trainz since UTC, but have stuck with TC3 as my main version, and I always have purchased them on CD/DVD direct from Auran.
@ LB - I don't think that'd work either since you can't gift a game you've already downloaded/played...

I suspect this may be what I'll have to do if I decide I really want the 3 routes. I still have a few days to decide and may just wait for the Steam Winter Sale anyway...

While I do own Trainz (about every dang version), this is that
other train simulator (formerly known as Railworks) ;D
...and the more I dig around for some info, the more it sounds like I can buy the new package, but I won't end up with an extra copy to gift/sell :-\

Well you could try and delete the game from you shopping cart and just leave the DLC and see what it gives you for a price.

Thanks Bison for the suggestion, but that didn't work since Steam has TS2013 and the 3 DLC routes as a single item (not sure I've seen them do that before) and I guess they're doing it to prevent people like me from trying to do what I'm trying to do! ???
I suppose you have TS 2012 auto upgraded to TS 2013 for free. Well they, Railworks, are actually forcing you to buy the full 2013 package to get the goodies like other 1st time TS2013 customers.
Buy a package that includes a Steam game you already own = in most cases, no extra code.

@Jomni - yup, and I got TS2012 fairly cheap in a previous Steam sale. With this sale I can buy the complete TS2013 base game, plus 3 new (to me) DLC routes. I'm just trying to be as cheap as possible, but still be able go use any of my previous DLCs...
I don't think you can split up the packages for gifting, on Steam, if it's one created by the publisher.
I'd be inclined to say you'd have to give or keep them all in a deal like this, too, but I could be wrong. This being the case that I've seen, I don't think you can:

I had Silent Hunter 4 bought from Wal-Mart and when I tried to buy the Wolfpack add-on from Steam, they said it was only compatible with THEIR version of SH 4. So I bought it from Amazon at the same price and have had no problems with the DLC. Don't know if what they said was totally true or just a ghost story to buy directly from Steam. Many of their other DLC's are likewise listed as for their version also. So you may not be able to mix and match as you like.

Steam won't be interested in your problem. As far as they're concerned your purchase is linked to your account and they either are unwilling or as they'll say unable to allow you to uninstall your initial copy. If your first copy was retail hard copy, you might suggest to the publisher that you are being left with redundant software and that it unedrmines your confidence to buy at release, when a gold version is likely to turn up at a later date. The other argument is that inflexibility over this punishes you as a bona fide customer.
I have had a similar issue with another game and the publisher recognised the issue I'd raised and gave me a set of new game codes so I could legitimately gift the game and DLC I already had on account, given that I'd bought their more inclusive, shinier 'Gold' edition. They weren't cooperative at first, and gave some BS excuses, but being persistent and researching your consumer rights can sometimes persuade. Give it a go, you've nothing to lose by it.
Steam will only give you a gift copy of an already owned Steam game in a package IF the product page says so. If the product page doesn't mention a gift copy, then you will not get an extra copy.

Exactly. :) That is why I raised the issue with the publisher. Steam seem to take the view that the codes represent a personal licence tied to the steam user account. Fortunately for me, after considering my representations the publisher gave me unique codes for my duplicate retail copies so I could gift it. When you think about it, they were not losing out, since they were paid for each physical product in question. By dealing fairly, they retained a customer and struck a blow against future boycott and bad publicity of their products from a bona fide customer.
OK, so I ended up picking up the Train Simulator 2013 package I wanted even though I already owned the base game. Steam warned me I already own TS2013 and explicitly told me, no extra copy. Fine since I just wanted the 3 DLC routes that came with it anyway. Long story, short. I got the 3 new routes, added to my existing base game and DLC for ~$19 instead of spending $120... :). Case closed...
