Title: The Friday Thread
Post by: MetalDog on December 07, 2012, 06:59:36 AM
I should call this the Saturday Thread as I have to work tomorrow, so today is like my Thursday.  In any event, my weekend will be taken up with various Warlock games, solo and MP and some Civ IV BTS MP goodness.

for me its the 'December' thread - todays my last day until Jan 8th, ive broken up with GF unit Mk IV - theres a whole month of gaming and turkey to be had. In no particular order:-

1. CMFI PBEM, just about to finish one, i presume my opponent will want a rematch
2. Get back into CKII
3. Civ 4 BTS - good egypt campaign going right now
4. Ravenshield 3 - completed first mission, love the planning stages
5. Dabble with Waking Mars, Earth 2160, FTL - all of which cost less than a fiver
6. Some Simcity 4 and Anno 1404

I know I asked you this before Geek biy where the hell do you work??

I will definitely be playing Warlock, amd I hope to fire up RoF for the first time...maybe I should wait on that until I get the TrackIR....

Also looking to start my Commander: The Great War campaign as the Central Powers.

Oh and I still need to find some time to try and learn SOTSII.

Hegemony Gold - looking forward to this.
Defcon - on sale yesterday fer $2.50, anyone else playing this? It would be a blast Gorg style.

Rise of Flight if Gus doesn't puss out.
Iron Front MP tomorrow.

And, if the rumours are true, Shogun 2!  Yes, word is that the latest beta drivers from AMD may have finally fixed the freezing bug that's plagued the game since FOTS was released.

I've finally made it all the way to the end of the CMBN campaign-Road to Monteborg. The last of 16 battles, a Battalion-sized assault and exit fight. The Germans have a battery of Flak 88's in a wood that pretty much dominates the whole map, several Stug's and a whole lot of infantry. This has been a great campaign and I think I'll miss it when it's finally over, if I win that is.

Probably more XCOM.

Definitely more Great Invasions. I'm still in May 350. Last week, still struggling with learning the interface and quirks, I learned that those grey territories aren't just empty with negligible population, after I sent small expeditionary forces from minor kingdoms (Ireland, Frankland, and Ghassan) to claim them. I may be able to recover the Frankland force, though bloodied, but I probably won't get back the Irish expedition (to the Orkney Isles north of Scotland), and the Ghassan troops were not only destroyed but I only just barely held off a raid from nearby Lahkmid bedouins into one of my territories. I'll have to reinforce them with EastEmpire funds and troops, but I spent a lot of initial cash on infrastructure this year (mostly farms and mines so I'll have more income later) and I'm still scrambling to throw back an opening invasion from Persia (with opportunistic raids from their Lahkmid lackeys into a territory I had to strip to meet the Persians elsewhere).

Phew.

Since part of the purpose of the game is to test how hard it would have been practically to even survive (much moreso thrive) treating my neighbors as peacefully as possible during the period (I'm running the game as a cooperative 'counselor' Let's Play at a theological forum I help admin), I've had to come up with protocols outside the game for deciding when I can legitimately expand into unclaimed territories, now that I've learned that in-game there's no possible way to claim them peacefully. This will make things tougher.  ;)

Anyway, I'll try to get through summer at least this week without losing my Ghassanid client kingdom outright. (For those who don't know, Ghassan is a small Christian kingdom east of the Jordan river and Galilee lake, roughly where the modern nation of Jordan is now; far western Arabia.)

I may fiddle around with some of the things I've picked up on sale recently at Gamersgate and Steam, too, starting with Dungeons.

Would be worth familiarising yourself with the game even before TIR purchase - mapping the controls is quite time-consuming.  As I said before I don't own a TIR, but I'd be pretty sure you get everything you need in the box.  I do actually have a Track-Clip Pro - I cheated and bought it (costs around $30?) rather than making my own.  What it is is an array of three IRLEDs which you clip onto your head set.  It works fine but is VERY fragile; mine is now held together with duct tape, matchsticks and blu-tac.

I think the "basic" TIR4 set includes a clip (just clip, not "pro", I think) with Hi-Vis type reflective strips on it which you place on a base-ball cap.  The camera which you mount on your monitor contains IRLEDs itself and the set-up works by reflections from the reflectors on your cap.  You can also use the Track-Clip Pro with this set up.  I'm afraid I can't tell you whether it's worth getting the TCP over the basic model.

*Edit: I see others have already posted the relevant stuff, sorry*

Anyway, to keep this post OT, I shall be Roffing tonight and will perhaps bash away a bit at Road to Mounteburg at some point over the weekend.  I'm finding it quite tough tbh, but I keep gleaning little game-play tips - not tactics, just how the game works - which improve my enjoyment

Well, after 7 hours of play I am just not getting in to Dishonored at all. So that's getting shelved. I had progressed a fair ways in Max Payne 3, only for 3 or 4 levels worth of advancement to disappear. Weeeeeee! That's a bit off putting so far as continuing with it for the time being.

So it's either going to be Alan Wake, which I tried and enjoyed a few weeks ago. Or I replay Mass Effect 2 to play up a character to carry in to Mass Effect 3. Not sure which it'll be.

JC does some amazing stuff with Arma II and his tie ins to the DCS stuff, doesn't he?

@tgb - hoping for a speedy recovery for your wife!

I'll probably be playing some more Panzer Commander Ostfront and Actung Panzer Operation Star.  I watched all of the BSG Blood and Chrome episodes on Youtube this evening so I'm thinking I may need some space action as well.  Not sure if that'll be Distant Worlds, Gratuitous Space Battles, Space Empires IV, or SOTS II yet though.

I really need to play a couple of more turns of Decisive Campaigns: The Blitzkrieg from Warsaw to Paris that I'm supposedly doing an AAR for.

+1 Hope she recovers soon.

I was going to do the DB and main quest in Skyrim, but I think I've found a bug in the latest version of the game, that makes doing the Dark brotherhood quest line really difficult. Every time I go into the Falkreath Hold area, the game CTD. Riverwood or the half moon mill are about as far as I can go before it happens. I've tried uninstalling all of my mods and I get the same thing. I only started getting it after I started the DB quest line. That being the case I'm probably going to just run around and take screenshots with my new lighting and grass mods. Probably get some CK2 time in as well, going to turn the game onto slow and read The Hobbit, for the first time, while time ticks by.

I may play some X-Com or give Fallen Enchantress another try as well. I really want to get into SOTS2, but with working long hours and a lack of sleep, I haven't been in to mood to learn anything new.

@Gus, I think you'll be fine with the TrackIR4; that's what I have.  I have the clip that goes on your hat and I highly recommend it.  It will just make your life easier in the long run.

The setting's okay. I am already getting a bit bored of the same guards over and over again, though. Some rogue is starting to carve your ranks up...think maybe you should shake things up, idiots? Travel in pairs, anything new? No? Okay then. I had just encountered Tall Boys for the first time in the most recent mission, but that was it. Nothing else new.

There's going to be a patch?  I think this game does need one but the forums at Slitherine don't talk about an upcoming patch.

My biggest gripe with Commander: The Great War is that the ai fields billions of troops all fully upgraded on all fronts while even with an handicapped ai I still struggle to hold the line.  I just can't mount a super heavy offensive as the CP after I initially take Belgium and Serbia.  In my current game as the CP the British have one aircraft and three, count them three, arty in the Gaza area that are absolutely crushing the Turks.  I just can't match that kind of firepower and how can the ai constantly fire all three pieces almost every turn?  That implies either they have massive ammo stockpiles or the ai cheats.  I'm really disappointed with this game.  Honeymoon is over and I'm looking for a possible divorce.

Official forums mentions a patch on the way with the goal in December.  One of the items to be included is an undo feature.  I also believe there is a bug in the game right now which they recommend paying on balancensince the handicaps aren't working right.  That will also be corrected in the patch.

I'm playing with hard core rules this time.  I'm not sure what the fu...uh...heck is going on that druid/fighter chick is already leveled up to level 2 while the rest of the party is lagging behind.  I don't remember her necessarily leveling faster then the rest of the group.  It's cool.  I need the extra heal spell.  I guess I just figured that my main character would level first since he's been in every single battle.

I still haven't got very far in the NWN2 Platinum game yet.  I love the D&D3.5 ruleset but have only played NWN2 in spurts over the years since it's release.  The dwarf character is pretty comical, gotta admit.  But I think my issue is fighting the camera, despite having the camera settings tweaked fairly well right now.  I'm sure these damn 3D cameras are the reason I often prefer old-style Isometric RPGs.

I ended up spending most of my free time today trying to track down my game breaking bug in Skyrim. My bug has expanded from a simple CTD when in the Falkreath area to not even being able to load a save game from that area. I think I'm just going to put off doing the DB quests until the next PC patch, which we will hopefully get right before/after Dragonborn releases.

After getting frustrated with Skyrim bug hunting I fired up Fallen Enchantress for a few hours. I want to like it, but its just not grabbing me.
