Fox goofed just a little on the caption - "WWII Fighter Jet Pulled From Lake Michigan"
I don't recall any jet-powered variants of the Wildcat.
Fox Never Goofs. The other media is biased towards propeller planes.
everyone knows propellers are liberal.
^depends on which way they spin :)
It's barely possible that one of the Bell prototype jets could have made it's way from the Mojave dessert to a lake in Michigan?
Dick Bong was test flying one, when the engine cut out and it crashed. Taking him out of the war was no favor as it turned out.

they spin to the left.
About 20,000 naval pilots were trained at the Great Lakes Naval Air Station there in Chicago. I remember reading somewhere once that the bottom of lake Michigan was literally covered with WWII aircraft that those pilots ditched for whatever reasons.
