Taking a day off from reviewing, I fired this beauty up again. The elegance in gameplay and strategy is awesome. Anybody who considers themselves a strategy gamer needs this game!
In true Google style..
+1
Geesh, you are tempting me on this one.....must resist.

Don't hesitate. It's a fun game.
It is fun.
I was a beta tester for the game and I quite enjoyed it. I played it quite a bit then so it's been on the back burner but I'm getting a craving again...
I was dissapointed that this game didn't gain much more attention than it did - it's a really clever design that is easy to play and rich in decision making wargame goodness. I'm primarily a board wargamer but this is one that I'll go back to over and over again, probably because it's almost like a PC version of "Victory in the Pacific" or "Fire in the Sky" boardgames.
I was hoping to find more games by this game programer (John Hawkins); doing a Google brings up his LinkedIn page which lists "Rise of Nations", "Age of Empires III" and "Kingdoms of Amalur" as his main project list.
I think I'll start up a game right now as a matter of fact, it's that good and real quick to get going and just play.
I'll too add my thumbs up for this game. It is too bad that the developer didn't continue working on games like this.
If it was sold in Steam it will get a lot of attention just like Unity of Command. Pretty approachable for the masses.
I really oughtta just avoid these forums during holiday season. My "to buy" list just keeps getting longer and longer...
I really enjoyed the demo but $40 makes me pause - guess I am spoiled by all the Steam sales! ;)
Martok,
You should DL the demo and check it out.
My bad - I see that WPP is $36 until Dec 31.

I've seen several reviews mention a pretty mediocre AI. Did this get improved in patches? Kind of important since multiplayer appears to be solely online, not PBEM.

Actually, it's $34 - so another 5% cheaper!
I'm also on the fence about this. Argh.

Here's the deal - it's a PTO wargame that satisfactorily allows you to game the entire war in one evening.
Turn-based, and they added a MP game in a patch.
What's not to love?
Play as the Japanese and you'll have a pretty good challenge - as the Japanese did historically.
I captured a very brief snippet of the gameplay moons ago, testing the process:

I don't think I played this since it first came out, but now I've reinstalled it. You bastiches.
With all this talk about shrapnel games, anyone ever play salvo....any good?
I found the mechanics tedious.
Damn you people :'(
Kissy-kissy, Gus. ;D ;D

I tried playing the demo, years ago, but had some display issues with the game & the interface was already troublesome before that. Looks like support dropped off for it very quickly, too. :( I had hopes for it, despite the blindingly fugly graphics, but it didn't seem very popular with the users.
Thanks for the thoughts on Salvo....the theme of the game sounded interesting, but sounds best to hold off....now war plan might different for me....been playing the demo a bit and seems like it could be fun....might see what all the holiday sales have to offer first, but this could be a purchase for me soon.
We should have a regular game resurrection thread that just mentions older games not visited much, and just the mention of the game seems to generate a whole boatload of excitement and enthusiasm again. I always have WPP installed on my laptop, but after this thread, I'm tempted to play it again - even with all the new games dropping out of the sky. Odd really.
It's a wonder the game companies don't plant an over-enthusiastic individual in the forums to do such a thing, generate interest in long past their sell by date products, to whip up wargaming enthusiasm into a purchasing froth! :)
In fact, rather than the cynical view to sell things, we could attempt a regular-ish feature of declaring a game a month, and have members of our community play it (whether against each other, or just singular, reporting their experiences). 12 older games explored in a year, and perhaps new folks can join in the nostalgia of these games with the others? Just a thought.

I've kinda been using the screenshot thread for my oldies lately. But when I get stoked about an old title I've revisited, I'll usually just do a search for the game's original thread, and post in that, or make a new one if it doesn't exist. It keeps the threads well-organized.
As for handing out homework assignments, I dunno how well that would be adhered to unless it was something for the front page of the site (like an oldie AAR or revisitation review). I think this latter one would be an interesting approach, especially if it featured some older games that didn't garner a site review or extensive chatter on the forum. There are always titles that either slip past me (especially now that indie developers are cranking them out in droves), or I put off buying and forget about, that are probably still worth a look.

Not a bad idea.
Our Friday threads may offer the opportunity to do that. They sometimes spark conversations about getting together for multiplayer games.

Hasn't that always been the case with wargamer's....always purchasing more and more games like a crack addiction even though we need another game like we need a hole in our heads (that old phrase may be phased out now with all the piercings that kids are getting, but I digress). It's the "this will be the game that I always go back to" and yet we rarely, if ever, find that one be all-end all game. How many games have been purchased and then purged off the harddrive or just sit on the bookshelf collecting dust? How often do you sit and stare at the list of games that you could be playing and you launch the game or open the box and then decide the better of it and switch to the XBox and some FPS? I know I've been there many, many times. WPP is a simple game to play so it is one that I'll launch if I'm in a Pacific War mood and want something that isn't going to overwhelm me with complex menus and submenus and number crunching and 100's of mouse clicks before I start each turn.

Well I worked out roughly recently that to play all the games I have to completion of all their content I would have to live for another 186 years given my current allocation of gaming time. thats also only the games I want to play. Yet I still buy virtually everything that comes out wargame wise. I tell my wife that wargames dont cost as much as crack cocaine so she shouldnt complain.
To my mind its the principle of diminishing returns - the less time you have to play - the more time you spend figuring out what to play to make best use of it - leading to less time to play and the whole vicious circle repeats itself.
""Fat, drunk, and stupid is no way to go through life, son."
Always worked for me.

Worked for Flounder as well. Not so much for Bluto (IRL).
