I have heard Commander: EAW Gold is good and Commander: Nappy is bad.
What sayest thee? It is time for me to pick up some titles
from the Matrix "Holiday" sale.
CEAW is better than CNAW.
CNAW is a fun game but the subject doesn't really fit as well with the game engine which means you have to be comfortable with a lot of abstractions in how it is presented, such as artillery firing at a range on the map which is about 100 miles, the cavalry on your left flank being in another country (i.e. 2-3 hexes away) in a way it plays like Civ V Napoleonic in the way/scale that units interact in a battle as it all takes place on the Europe wide strategic map. If you can live with these abstractions then it is certainly a fun enough game.
In comparison CEAW with its Corps and Divisions of Armour and Infantry fits a lot better with the map and game engine that was designed for it.
With CEAW you also get the Grand Strategy mod which is effectively the next version of the game for free at the Slitherine site.
If you are looking for Napoleonic Grand Strategy another (very cheap) option could be Imperial Glory currently on GOG for $2.99.
Imperial Glory is a so-so Total War knockoff with an OK strategic game and horrible tactical combat (no issuing orders when paused, morale isn't modeled, etc.). The best grand strategy game of that era is still Crown of Glory Emperors Edition, which is probably included in the Matrix sale.
CNAW is terrible - single arm corps, instant naval transport per corps, artillery that shoots across Belgium.
Crown of Glory is the best Nappy strat game.
CNAW is awful - awful awful awful. Map scale is waaaay off, manuever is almost impossible, corps are single arms and it just feels ridiculously silly. There are tons of other issues as well. I wanted to like it but it's complete crap.
