Well as we all know some out there are convinced that the world as we know it will end on Friday. So I figure we'd better get a jump on the weekend gaming thread, you know, just in case. I should be playing my favorite games of all time in case after Friday I don't get the opportunity to do so again, but I'm not sure I will.
I'm planning at shaking my fist in defiance of the Mayan Apcolypse by playing something from the following list.
Battle Academy - I've been playing through the Battle for Normandy campaign again the last couple of evenings.
Crusader Kings II - Only if I pick up the Aztec DLC, because it seems fitting. I know Aztecs are not Mayans. Whatever, dude.
Star Wars The Old Republic - Having fun playing my Sith inquistor.
Of course I'm sure some other game will grab my fancy and I'll end up playing something completely unexpected, but hey how often do you get to shake your fist in defiance of the end of the world by playing a game?
(https://www.grogheads.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffarm8.staticflickr.com%2F7163%2F6601978779_d2b2bcebba_z.jpg&hash=af710b550835b8fd1b1da32fda0b008682f017ff)
I think defcon would be a perfectly themed game.
I forgot to mention I've bought a tub of Rocky Road ice cream to fuel my defiance.
Well, I was going to cook a steak, but it turns out I've got to pick my sister up at the airport Friday night, so my gaming will have to wait until after the apocalypse. But I'm hoping to get in on some Warlock multiplayer action with some of you guys. Should be fun.
Crying through Toy Soldiers, perhaps some M2TW Britannia or M2TW Stainless Steel, and maybe some more training in RoF. And Warlock MP if anyone is around.

I will be around. However, I am far from certain what my schedule will look like.
Well I picked up everything I need to play out an end of the world scenario playing Crusader Kings II for about $15 off the Steam sale. Ok. Basically I got the DLC I was missing and that crazy Aztec thingy. Now I just need to figure out what the hell I'm doing and hope I have fun doing it. Cause I'm really going to be pissed if the end comes and I'm not enjoy the game I'm playing.
Probably not the best time to finally decide to play the War in the Pacific AE full campaign !
For me a bit of WAW a World Divided or Carriers at War, back to some of the old stuff.

Training's over. Time to get in the fight. I say we go hunt some Tuna.

CMBN. I'm 13 turns from the end of the very last battle in the Road to Monteborg campaign. That should fit into the Mayan End of the World schedule nicely. If I'm still here Sat. morning, maybe I'll buy the 2.0 upgrade and re-play the last few turns and see if there's any great difference. I don't want to waste $10 bucks if the world's gonna end. That wouldn't make any sense at all.

That's pretty funny.
I will hope to be asked to join the Warlock MP goodness. As a matter of fact, tomorrow is supposed to be a horrendous day weather wise and looking forward to coming home to some games will make the day bearable.
Playing some X-Com with the Warspace Extension mod tonight. Tomorrow night will be finishing my Christmas shopping, you know in case the Mayans are wrong, and maybe see the hobbit after that. That should just about wrap up the time I have left. If where still here Friday night, I think I might start a new Fallout 3 character.
IF they turn out to be wrong, then my gaming for this weekend and all of next week will be a mix of:
X-com
Skyrim: Think I've finally fixed the bug(s) that have been plaguing me. Going to start a new character, probably a mage, and focus solely on the main quest. I think If I devote 4-6 hours for 2-3 days I should be able to get through it. Want to have it done by the start of the new year, you know assuming there is one. lol
Crusader Kings 2: Want to finish up my Italian campaign and move onto something else. I'm thinking maybe one of the English dukes.
May spend the random hour here or there next week playing Mass Effect, Fallout 3, AJE, Fallen Enchantress, Sword of the Stars II, or Mech Warrior: Online
I might kicks in to Mass Effect 3. Probably continue Alan Wake as well. And of course, I'll be playing the 'HOLY CRAP EVERYTHING IS SO CHEAP!' game as well.
I'll be busy baking some humble pie tonight to hand out to all those die hards that believe crap.
AFTER I've baked those pies, I'm hoping for some Combat Mission Normandy and definitely more Far Cry 3 which I am enjoying immensely.
I would love to get more Flaming Cliffs done - but I always seem to be putting it off - even given the beauty of the game - I'm just finding it hard to get into games I have to learn keys for!
And I will be continuing my AAR of Thunderbolt Apache Leader.
True. Key assignment is what makes me not like FC as well. And it's different per aircraft. Study sims with just one aircraft are better but these games still feel like work.
I'll be playing Iron Front. It is frustrating but finishing a task (not even a whole mission) is quite satisfying if the event triggers fire off as planned.

Big mix-- lots of Time (end of 13th Baktun and start of 14th baktun). Maybe the 13th was a bad baktun. It started in 1618 as the 30-years war got under way. Partly in celebration of the end of the 13th Baktun, I'll be playing some 30-years war stuff (Hochst and Fleurus 1622 at least) and then some FOTS, and ROF and Iron Front and CMBN:CWF 2.0
I plan to play the following games during my holidays:
- Armada 2526 Supernova
- Scourge of War
- Haegemonia (playing the Mars campaign)
- King of Dragon Pass
- Fragile Alliance
To begin with...

Indeed...even 3 minutes seems like a long time. And that's what she said.

Since you mentioned my name in this conversation, I will interupt a little and ask.... wtf is RoF?
Ring of Fire? (being a gunny and all)
Rise of Flight - WWI air sim.
Yes RoF. Never having played it before it is taking a commitment for me to learn, one I have had a tough time keeping through the flu and lack of time. SDR if the blizzard doesn't blow you away let me know. Otherwise back to Toy Soldiers (which is quite good) or starting a new Commander: The Great War campaign to satiate my waning WWI kick.
I've eaten all my rocky road ice cream.

Anguille, pay no attention to those two. They are just jealous of my Warlord prowess. I have units and cities and spells to research each turn. I have planets to terraform and enemies to crush under my boot heel. Those two, heck, those two ENJOY having all that time to plan their next move.
I have no idea what the hell is going on in CK2. I'm about 40 years into playing the Duke of Munser or something like that and have yet to do anything but marry a bunch of characters. I assume there is something that is supposed to be going on in game, but I'll be damned if I know what it is exactly.

You can upgrade your cities/bishoprics/castles. You can attempt to fabricate claims to other counties to satisfy de Jure claims to create better titles for yourself. A myriad of other possibilities. The goal is to collect as much Gold, Prestige and good will with Christendom for each of your successive rulers until 1453. As noted elsewhere, this is a fine example of a Paradox game that has an enormous amount of time, potentially, between things happening.

No. I get I can do all those things. I'm just saying there is not much that happens. Woohoo! I fabricated a claim! I married my 5th son! I imprisioned my granddaught! woohoo....it's alright. I've played a number of hours today so it's not all horrible. I'm just waiting for that moment where the game gets me excited about what's happening.

Am going to buy a brand new game - if only to buy one without feeling the need to convince myself - this one I will play to completion.
OK. I think I'm having fun with CK2 now. I finally figured out how to win a war, but the warscore is a bit silly. You get a 100% and they refuse anything but a white peace unless you leave a massive army sitting in their county until they finally give in and submit.
Well I won the CMBN Road to Monteborg campaign in time to avoid the Mayan apocolypse, or is it the Zombie apocolypse? So I'm happy either way. It's the first CM campaign I've finished since CMBB. And Metaldog, I'm still holding onto that $10 just in case. Hell I haven't even made the house payment yet.

So when does the Mayan Apocalypse count as "through"?

The sieges can take quite awhile, since your army has to capture each individual city, town, cathedral. All while your vassals increasingly get pissy for being mobilized. Just make sure you can keep enough troops in said besieged provinces so that they outnumber the enemy troops
inside the place or you'll get the little red soldier icon which means that your siege stopped progressing. :-[
Usually the first thing I do, after settling initial family affairs (marriages, child tutoring, etc), giving orders to my ministers, and selecting research foci, is to start investing in my Castle infrastructure(s). I dunno if you found the building lists yet, but when you have a county selected just click on the box (with the pic) of the castle there and a build list will pop up. Invest in bigger monthly income, and then later you can expand your troop levying buildings once your monthly income is higher. After that it's just rearing/torturing your children/family/vassals (there's always some in those groups attempting to overthrow or kill you) and playing the Military and external Political game. The fun and the big sense of achievement (& a forming storyline) comes when all the above start coming together and having effects on each other. :D
Totally agree with Nefaro on CKII. Making more money early is key. Raising your troop levels comes a close second.
My issue is that gaining a county or title is depended on pressing it through war. You do and win a 100% warscore. There is no seige ongoing because there is no levy left and yet the defender will not give into to terms other than white peace or surrender. Eventually they will give better terms and fall under your Dukedom or whatnot however the title never comes as a result. I've had blood lines that fill a title's lineage, but the title still remains outside of my control. I'm sure there is a simple thing or five that I'm overlooking. It gets old having to have a 1-2K+ army sitting for at least a year before terms are made by them (the loser) that don't screw the winner over.
It's been a bit since I last played, but, one you get that 100% Warscore, you should be able to end the war on your terms. And look at the de Jure Counties that make up the Dukedom or Kingdom. Once you own a majority, you should be able to usurp the title.
I've yet to get my terms in ending a war to include within my own kingdom even with a warscore that is 100%. There has to be something I'm missing and I'm just not seeing it.
Are you involved in someone elses war? Or is it one that you started?
My wars have been of two types. Me using a CB to attempt and gain a county I have a claim on or a county in my Dukedom declaring themselves Independent and attacking me. I haven't yet mettled in a call to war from an ally or the Pope.
Let's see if I remember rightly, once you conquer, if you have a claim to the territory being fought over, you will able to retain it as your own. Once the Warscore reaches 100%, you should be able to click on the little face in the bottom right hand corner and get them to agree to what you want. If not, try the Diplomacy(?) tab. That should give you the options of Enforce Demands, White Peace or Surrender.
That's what I'm saying until I get the little face there is only the option for white peace or surrender. Their offer, the little face, usually takes about a year to appear and then I get terms that would be like the enforce demands one but it never includes the title.
Use the Diplomacy tab to get your Enforce Demands option. And you have to go to the de Jure screen for the title. For instance, the Duchy of Connacht consists of County Connacht and County Breifne. If you click on the coat of arms for either of them, it will take you to the screen that shows what counties make up the Duchy. Towards the top, there will be an option to usurp the title. If you meet the criteria, you can take the title.
Haha. I know but the enforce demands is ALWAYS greyed out. I have yet to get to use that option. I will look into the usurp option.
Happy hunting, my liege :-)

When you declare war, the window should give you options as to what you are fighting
for, i.e. the intended end-result you want. Make sure you're selecting the proper option because there can be different ones depending on situation. Ideally, you are pressing a title claim for possession of said lands (not vassalization & such). Once you've whipped 'em good, and siege most of the separate holdings within the county in question, they'll start sending peace offers that usually suck up until you've captured most or all of their besieged holdings there (you only cap
one at a time so it takes awhile). Don't bother accepting anything other than the enemy fully agreeing to the terms you specificed when you DOW'd him, unless of course, things have really gone south and you are on the receiving end.
I'll have to look at what I'm doing more closely. Right now my goal is to unite Ireland and maybe work my way onto the English island onto the shores of the France.
LOL, good luck with that. I united all of Scotland, then was called a pretender, had my throne taken from me, I got banished from my kingdom, and my 4 year old son/heir has been imprisoned by the new "king" for the last 12 years.
Now, playing a teenager who's been locked up with no end in sight for 12 years...that is some fun gaming. ::)
Anyway, I'm gaming straight on through the apocalypse with War of the Roses and a Britannia campaign in M2TW. Got the new Christmas two-handed sword that was on sale tonight and some new black plate mail, so I'm looking pretty styling now.
Hey I'm just about to start a M2TW Britannia campaign...probably as Ireland. What faction are you playing as?
When I saw your post that's what inspired me to give the campaign a play-through...I've never actually played it.
I'm going through as Scotland.
Gus. Watch-out for those damned Vikings/Norway. They'll really come after you.
^You're talking about in M2TW right? :)
I've played the campaign once through, but I don't remember what faction I used. This time I'm jonesing for Ireland, perhaps the Welsh.
I played through twice. Once as the Scots and once as the Norsemen. Good times.
Took the Welsh...turns out the last playthrough I did was the Irish.
Well shove a fork in wish to be King of Ireland. I couldn't pass on my Duke titles to a boy. It seems you need to have one to do that. Anywho I'm taking out my last county to make claims on the King title. I die literally as the last defending troop is dying. My daughter succeeds me and my cleverly crafted kingdom is torn asunder. Seriously I kept popping out the daughters. No sons. Sad day in Ireland for me. Time to reload from an earlier save! :D
OK. This is a pretty fun game. It just took me awhile to get into it.
Yeah Gus. I was talking about your M2TW campaign. When I played it, the Norse were very aggressive and had to be watched-out for always showing-up when and where you least expected them. When I tried playing them though, I was never able to be that successful. You're making me want to try it again though.

Once you're done playing Ireland (often considered "noob island"), start as some leader on the continent. ;) The variety of starts to choose from, especially with some DLC, can provide some interesting situations. I don't even mind starting off as a vassal sometimes, as it's an extra challenge playing power games within your kingdom/empire and knowing who & when to support to make out with more influence (or attempt to break off on your own).
Yeah I've only played on Ireland specifically because I read it was a good place to learn the basic mechanics and how all the character relationships work. Well I restarted and my Duke dude lived long enough to create the King title. I figure out that if I disband a Duke title not only will I not loose it upon death but I can then recreate it later. :D Hell yeah. Right now the Queen was able to basically take the last 6 or so counties by requesting them to become vassels. Putting down a rebellion started by my worthless King and working on getting a claim on the Isle of Mann to begin my drive toward conquering the Big Isle. There is still a lot of time where it's nothing of note going on but I'm learning to weed through the vassels needs and such during that time.

If you zoom out far enough, names of Kingdoms and Empires will appear.
Have you tried Print Screen? I personally use Fraps for screenshots.
Thanks Kushan, but I don't know if I'm asking the right way. I guess what I'm looking for is the shot that you often see on the Paradox forums of a zoomed out world map that shows the kingdoms or nations without any UI just the map, colored and labelled by kingdom/nation/faction what have you.
Have you tried all the buttons around the mini map?
Gah. Tried to fire up Neverwinter Nights yesterday, and it's not working. Blast it. :(
Martok I cannot remember what the fix is but look on the NWN forums or at gog forums and there is a work around. It's really something very simple like alt/tab in and out of the game or some thing like that.
Thanks Bison. I'll see what I can find out after I wake up tonight.

No UI at all?? That was probably the start screen where you choose which ruler to play.
That or they were zoomed way out and there's a UI hotkey toggle.
