Rather than continually extend a single thread all the time, I decided to make new ones every first Monday of a month. :)
Note! -- it isn't at all necessary to be following my self-disciplinary protocols to participate in the thread. You can just talk about games you finished during the past week, especially over the weekend, as a complement to the Friday threads every week. Be as brief or as verbose as you like.
This week I came very close to finishing the DoW2: Chaos Rising main campaign; I'm at (what the game is telling me is) the final battle against the ultimate bad guy of the campaign, although clearly there is a secondary UBG in the wings whom the Blood Raven Space Marines need to go kick the ass of, who seems likely to be far more difficult and dangerous (in his-or-her own way) than this campaign's UBG, despite being at best only a minion.
(I'm trying to avoid spoilers for anyone who hasn't played it yet.)
My guess is that the storyline won't follow the Ravens any further along that line for CR, and instead this will be reserved for the Space Marine campaign in the DoW: Retribution expansion. If so, I'll be curious whether the other faction campaigns tie in with that story somehow. But I don't own Retribution yet, and I'm not sure when I'll get around to it.
I'm reasonably sure I would have finished the campaign Saturday, except Friday night I had to buy a new TV (having donated mine to a cousin for her last semester in college), and it took me a while to "dial in" things. (It's a 47" LG [Life's Good??] model with 3D. It also has a 2D-to-3D conversion engine, so practically everything can be watched in crappy post-production quick 3D. ;) 8) DoW2 looks FREAKY in 2D-to-3D, btw. Lord of the Rings, on the other hand, is shockingly impressive as a quick crappy post-conversion.) I'm not entirely sure I'll keep the TV yet--I may go back to my previous Vizio brand, which ran great for me for the year or two I had it before giving it away.
Note to anyone considering getting LG models: mine featured one and only one way to port sound out of the set, by optical cable. This is rather a problem, because my old and perfectly serviceable speaker set doesn't receive optical digital audio, and the LG sound bar which came bundled with this TV (and which doesn't have pass-through for the signal), while quite respectably serviceable, lacks the punch and oomph of my old speaker set. (This is probably the main reason why I'm debating taking the new set back to Sam's Club and ordering an equivalent Vizio model. LG is fine, and generally deserves its plaudits from Amazon reviewers, but I want my better audio. Without having to spend yet more money buying a new speaker system. :P )
Anyway, I won't really be able to add DoW2:CR to my finished list until (probably) tonight, at which time having finished five games I'll be pondering what to buy next. Or rather, I'll be pondering how to rationalize the two games I bought on a flash Steam sale yesterday. ;D More on that later.
So, what did anyone else manage to finish this week(-end)?
My wife finished some secrets of the Amazon puzzle something or other that she downloaded for her iPad on Saturday. By Sunday night she finished the whole thing. She was totally engrossed in it for 2 straight days.
I can see that it's going to be some time before I'll be able to say that I've actually finished a game(I'm working on Icewind Dale right now), so the only thing I finished this weekend was a couple of glasses of strong Belgian Ale(Kwak and Tripel Karmeliet). ;)
I am a hair away from winning the M2TW Britannia campaign as the Welsh. Have already knocked the English out of the game but now to meet campaign rules I have to turn on my Irish allies.
Also dangerously close to finishing the main quest of Skyrim and Dawnguard. Just in time to mod Dark Souls and ready myself for punishment. Dig it!
I did manage to capture my first Shard in Eador: Genesis.

the one my wife finished off was the iAppStore freebie at Starbucks either this week or last week. She DL'ed it on Friday late, started playing it on Saturday, and didn't stop 'til her eyeballs were about to melt on Sunday and seemed genuinely surprised when the "The End" screen appeared.
Well I've beaten every boss in Diablo 3 on Inferno difficulty. Met a pretty cool dude who really hooked me up with some sweet gear.

That sounds like my wife. Her parents and I all went in together and got her a tablet for Christmas and she is totally engrossed in the free games.
I only finished a couple of side quests on Skyrim and a few bottles of beer (Budweiser). Spent most of yesterday messing around with the Skyrim construction kit and making a mod compatibility patch.
I finished unlocking all the weapons for the vanguard class in Chivalry.
I finally finished my Civ V marathon game as the Celts. I was able to win a space race victory, but only because the Byzantines decided to ignore me and get into an all-out war with the Incas.
I started another Civ V game with the goal of winning a diplomatic victory as it was the only type I hadn't completed yet. Started a marathon game with random continents on Prince level as the Siamese. I lucked out an got a decent sized continent to myself (plus 3 city states). Resource poor but lots of food. I didn't even meet another Civ until 1526. I was pretty far behind in tech and fairly small so everyone pretty much ignored me in favour of bashing each other's brains in on a massive continent. I think it's theonly game I've played where I never fought another civ at all. I just made trade agreements, bought off city states, built culture and gold and bought my way to diplomatic victory in 2037.

I played solo. It works surprisingly well. I played it where if I drew a card that had an action that allowed an additional action, like Knight's Charge, then that side could draw a second card. For example, Knight's Charge allows a movement card to be played before the charge, so I'd draw a second card, play that for the MP, then the Charge card.
I played the Lewes scenario, and it came down to both sides needing one last point to win, and a significant back and forth for that last point.

Despite some allergies crushing my head early yesterday afternoon, after a nap and some meds I successfully beat the final mission, thus indeed finishing a game by Monday! ;D

Puzzle Quest 1 (not remotely 'finished' in the story, but still a good 25 hours)

That's one more than I needed to 'unlock' buying a new game, but my most recent plan had been to finish fifteen games preparatory to buying the Mass Effect Trilogy.
My most recent plan fell into ruin when I scoped out the final day of sales at Steam, and noticed (the enhanced final versions of) both Witcher games for a total of around $10. (Or maybe $15, I forget the precise details. 75% off whatever the normal Steam price is.)
That series has been on my radar for a long time, and I didn't want to pass up such a ridiculously low sale; so I spent my buy-unlock on Witcher 1 and pre-spent my next buy-unlock on Witcher 2.
This means before I can buy another game, I ought to finish nine more games, two of which can be the Witcher series.
Incidentally, the reason I had gone to Steam was because I was thinking of finally playing the Soulstorm campaign (even though I've definitely played more than 25 hours on that game already between skirmish and mp), and wanted to see if SS was available for a few dollars so I could get an 'archive' version. It wasn't (more like $20!), although I'm sure it and the other DoW1 games will come down for a sale eventually.
At that point I was going to install the recent FPS Space Marine (bought a while back), but then I checked the current sales and etc. ;)
However, once Witcher 1 was downloaded, I did try to install Soulstorm from my DVD, figuring I'd save the Witcher game for later in my finish list. The install itself went fine; but for some reason I can't yet figure out, the game won't allow me to create a 'player': I'll type in the name for a new account, and click the Create button, and all it does is erase the field. It doesn't add the new account to the player list.
I don't recall offhand if I had already installed DowPROSS before I tried to play vanilla, so possibly that was a problem. Running the program as an administrator on WinXPSP2 emulation doesn't help; running the program at lowest resolution doesn't help (at highest resolution the gamescreen tends to get a bit lost around the edges so I thought that might be what was happening to the text in a way--I've seen resolution issues cause that problem before.) I'll need to do some research to see if Win8 itself just isn't compatible for some reason regardless of mode. But I've also uninstalled the game (and DoWPRO) for a fresh install.
Although this brings up the further/new question of what registry cleaner to get for Win8. Hm.
(Also this brings up the option of downloading a VirtualPC shell for WinXP from Windows, which I've been told is available at no cost if I'm using Win8 Pro.)
Naturally, I'm worried now that buying the Steam version of Soulstorm won't allow me to create a new player either; I checked the Steam forum for the game and saw several worrisome problems but not that one specifically.
Oh well... worst case scenario is that I unpack my previous Falcon laptop (which I need to do anyway to continue porting some files over) and install SS on that for a campaign. I just wanted to super-bling the game out once with my new hardware. :)

I really enjoyed the single-player campaign in Space Marine, Jason. If you're into the WH40K universe I think you'll have a great time playing it :)
Finished Sleeping Dogs
Just imagine Grand Theft Auto in Hong Kong and you have Sleeping Dogs. The kung-fu fighting part of this game is pretty decent, and the storyline while predictable, is well done. Like most of these sandbox games I was starting to tire with the repetition of some of the missions, but the game ended before I got to the point of saying screw it. Of all the sandbox stlye games I have played, I would put this as my second favorite after Red Dead Redemption which I consider one of the top 10 games of all time.
My next game to finish will be Assasins Creed II on the Xbox. I hope.

Toonces I bought anXBox controller for Dark Souls and will be modding it up good and proper...I have high hopes for this one.
The thing with Dark Souls, the one thing I just can't wrap my head around, is how one thumb-stick works moving your guy, and the other thumb-stick moves the camera.
I guess it's like patting your head and rubbing your belly at the same time. Some folks can do it no problem, some folks can either pat both, or rub both, but not rub and pat at the same time. I'm like that guy. I can't seem to make my guy go where he needs to go while concurrently pointing the camera in the relevant direction.
That may be an issue. Beyond that I modded the graphics for true PC uberness. If you're interested, check it:

Witcher 1 is proceeding along nicely, meanwhile, after I hunted around to figure out how to solve the 'everything-is-transparent-to-light-sources' bug. I just started Act 2, meaning the tutorial stages are now over.

For what it's worth, I played and finished the short dual-stick-shooter prequel,
Kill Team, a few months ago. :) (Not sure if that's available anywhere except as a PSN download though.)

The hell of it is that, in canon (especially thanks to Peter David's excellent run), Aquaman tends to
fight ancient eldritch horrors. So it actually makes sense, in a way, that he'd be able to deploy some if he had to. 8)

This is exactly what got to me after a few days too.
Much to nobody's surprise (I expect), including mine, I didn't come even remotely close to beating The Witcher this week.
But neither did I play the game (or any game) much either. In fact, I'm still only in the first cluster of villages and towns in the game, not far into Act 2.
I'm very doubtful I'll have finished a game by next Monday either, but the point of the exercise is to spend less money on new games and to better appreciate the ones I have by finishing them.
So, who actually finished games this week or weekend?
Finished Sleeping Dogs and the Nightmare in North Point DLC last night. Got both on the last day of the Steam sale, when they mistakenly put it on 91% off sale.
Spent about 30 hours. I enjoyed seeing the city, and the DLC was humorous. Definitely worth the $5 I paid.
I did actually finish ky M2TW campaign and won as the Welsh.
I finally finished the original Borderlands! No small accomplishment because I rarely finish SP campaigns these days. But seeing how B2 is going to be a definite buy at some point, I felt the need to finish it as I hate playing a sequel without completing the original (not only that, but seeing how most sequels today are really just incremental improvements on the original, I don't feel the need to rush off to the newest version ASAP like I used to in the past).
Overall, I have become a big fan of the franchise. I find the characters, art direction, and corporate dystopia setting to be fresh and interesting. And the gunplay can't be beat. I will say, however, that I found the conclusion to the campaign to be a disappointment. It really was one big non sequitur! Where the heck did that ending come from?!? :P
Regardless, I believe my time on Pandora was well spent. :)
PS: I have some further thoughts on Borderlands and what I consider to be a Stalker connection on my blog (http://burkesjoystick.blogspot.com/2013/01/borderlands-other-stalker.html). I think it was that connection that kept me going more than anything else.
What's next? Hmm. I was going to continue with Claptrap's Robot Revolution DLC seeing how the end of the campaign seems to feed right into it, but I need a break from this franchise. I think I might go with Farcry 3 next, seeing how it is all the rage and there is nothing else on the horizon...and for a long time, too. :-\ I was also going to finish Fallout 3, but the Wanderer's mod, which makes the game a much more hardcore experience, seems to keep crashing the game and my PC (which is why I hate non-Steam Workshop mods). If I can't get it running, I might just have to shelve FO3 for good as I found the stock game to be too superficial.
finished the main story of batman arkham city last night. doing some side quests and grabbing collectibles right now. going to try and finish far cry 2 next.

^That's the problem I have in playing almost any console FPS/S (shooter/swordfighter) game. I had played Oblivion on the PC and loved it but decided to restart the game on console after getting a PS3 and buying a used copy of the game online. It looks gorgious on my HDTV but I have a hard time killing anything, even the rats at the beginning, because my view keeps flying around while trying to use the fight buttons while moving the thumbsticks. Very frustrating. I didn't learn to game with consoles like many but always played with mouse/keys so I'm almost thinking my brain is now hardwired that way. :(
Managed to get a couple of hours on Warlock MP with MetalDog, and finally knocked Anna out of the game. I just have one of the Lich King's cities to clear, and then this island I'm on will be all mine...Mwhahahaha!
Meanwhile, MD continues to subdue the underworld.

Um... in related news, I'm still not out of Act 2 yet, so I'm nowhere near finishing the game, but I haven't played much either while sorting out my various monitor/computer issues. Finished up the Axis campaign on Unity of Command... really enjoy that game, mainly because the scenarios are fast enough that if you do the "puzzle" wrong, it's no sweat to try again. Played some Kingdoms of Amalur also, but not even close to finishing after 70 hours.
Just finished Dawnguard. I don't really understand the negative press and reviews it got...if you enjoy The Elder Scrolls worlds, and the occult, and vampires...why would you not enjoy this? Great final battle too. Think I may move on to Deus Ex: Human Revolution before diving into Endless Space and purchasing Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion.
This is the 2nd game I've finished in a week...I'm on a roll!!

Did you use one of the vampire overhaul mods or vanilla? I just started the dawnguard quest line tonight. Wasn't sure what faction I was going to join on my mage, until coincidentally Underworld was on TV tonight. I think its a sign.
Definitely a sign. I played through vanilla....the number of mods for Skyrim befuddles me.
I've finished my first 4 patrols in SH5. I'll play the 5 patrol at some point this week. I need to break the blockade of Germany by sinking an aircraft carrier with my little ol' Uboat. Good freaking times.
Finished the Mars Campaign in Haegemonia....now starts the large campaign.
After two very devastating missions in my CMSF Canadian Campaign (I don't replay missions and accept losses)... I decided to declare the campaign FINISHED. Lol!
Probably start it again. Those Canadians are organized strangely and lacks punch. They can't even dislodge a few insurgents. I really need to get used to them and develop strong tactics.
Still haven't moved much on The Witcher. :P By which I mean I haven't moved at all on The Witcher.
I have however managed to (almost) migrate my account data over from my dying old PS3 to a brand-spanking new one. Sad that my PS2 functionality will likely be gone now; there's a sort of shell available for free download from PSN, but from its description it only works if I can install the PS2 disk to my hard drive, and I don't recall any games I ever played on the PS2 that even allowed that. :(

Bison: I read with great interest a thread elsewhere on Grogheads this week regarding which Silent Hunter game worked best when mod-souped up. I was a big fan of Silent Service in the old C64 and early PC days, so I recall my delight when I bought SH2, which had been praised to the heavens by a number of magazines and websites (...were there even websites in those days? I remember magazines existing....)
--WHO OBVIOUSLY HAD NEVER EVEN PLAYED THAT BUGGY MESS OF A GAME!! >:( Horrible, horrible disappointment, and tough to patch to boot. Every time I think of trying a new SH, I poke around and see evidence the games are still released in a mid-beta state at best. (Thus the necessity for mod-souping the hell out of them.)
Still, I dream two or three times a year I guess about playing SS, so I'd say there's a reasonable probability I'll invest in a SH game eventually someday, even if I have to borg it up to Robocop levels. ;D
Anguille: I've heard of the space strategy Haegemonia, although I've had my eye more on the Greek States Total-Warish game Hegemony instead.
Jomni, CMSF is definitely on my to-play-and-finish list, though I'm not sure how far down I've put it. (Also the list tends to shift around; the Witcher games were even further down the list but had been put on after-Christmas sale at Steam when a new-game slot opened up in my schedule. At 75% off I'd've been insane not to jump and put my new gaming rig through a harsh workout.)
CK2 - Current campaign I started off as a Polish count and have steadily been conquering provinces. 200 years ago finally conquered a good block and declared independence and all hell broke lose. Fought the King twice to gain and keep independence and continued to pick off provinces as there was finally a weak king and several others have continued to try for or have gotten independence. This weekend I finally gained enough to usurp the title of King of Poland. I had hoped to finish reunifying all the provinces to obtain my goal of King of all provinces, however did not have enough time. So far my second son is out to get me and my son-in-law. Good times

Finished the "Stuck in the Teeth" scenario in "Battles from the Bulge"...played as the Americans and got my first and only victory so far in this game....a marginal victory, but a victory none the less!

I have both. Haegemonia is already old but had very nice graphics and a solid story....i finished it once playing the Earth campaign.
I managed to complete the Stony Creek and Anilsund caves for Skyrim over the weekend. Stony Creek is very small but Anilsund is the real deal. Lots of draugers and magic users and lots and lots of traps. But the loot is worth it, more than Lydia and I could tote-out together. We had to go back a second time. 4 Or 5 Boss-Level chests, the last of which I unlocked with my very last lockpick. A truly great dungeon crawl.
I finished the "Legend of Dead Kel" DLC for Kingdoms of Amalur... doing all the sidequests and keep improvements, I got like 12 hours out of it. There are a few sidequests I won't bother with though, as they just bloat your inventory with books, and no way to delete them.
I finished the single player story in Far Car 3 this weekend.
What is this "Far Car" series of which you speak? Its title sounds intriguing and evocative!--something along the line of Interstate 76 perhaps, but more of a free-roaming sandbox game? Grand Theft Apocalypse in effect?

Spent most of Saturday playing Skyrim, trying to beat the first Alduin fight. Even after turning Deadly Dragons from insane to hard difficulty, I just can't seem to kill him. I had him close a few times, but right as he was about to die, i would get hit by a fireball and by killed. The only thing I got done was some quests for the college, searching for some of shalidors writings and recovery a book for the librarian. Going to do some of the dawnguard DLC vampire quests and get a few more levels before I go back to Alduin.
I also played CK2, and have managed to secure all but 2 of the de jure provinces that belong to the Kingdoms of Lotharingia and Burgundy. I got the message in 1215 about rumors of the mongols being united. Not sure what that's going to mean in the long term. The Byzantines control most of southern Russia to the edge of the map at the moment, along with all their de jure provinces, and a little more. Not to mention the Kingdom of Poland and the Russia states acting as a buffer between the HRE and the mongols spawn point. First game that I've made it this far in. If the Mongols reach Italy/western Europe, then I can always retreat behind the alps and hold the 3 passes into Italy. In the mean time, I'm going to keep chipping away at the independent HRE Dukes and unite as many as I can before I turn to taking on the HRE himself. I'd really like to take both France and the Byzantines and reform the old Roman empire before the game ends, but I don't think I have the time left to do it.
^^I've never played nor even heard of Far Cry 1 and 2 but I recently was told to get Far Cry 3 by a friend. The game is sort of like a Grand Theft Auto/Skyrim/Fallout type of game. The story and characters are captivating and the degree of freedom you have to go off on your own is incredible.
Yep, I'm a big fan of FC3 and haven't even played it yet. ;D
I was just having a bit of fun with your inadvertent mis-spell, since "FAR CAR" does sound (to me) like a nifty title for a franchise.
