I'm very concerned about the implications of this for games that cover current events. http://www.forbes.com/sites/michaelpeck/2013/01/08/apple-says-no-to-game-on-syrian-civil-war/

This is not the first time Apple jumped on the PC bandwagon. I stopped buying music through the iTunes store when Apple censored the Manhattan Declaration app:

Apple sometimes applies the rules in odd ways, almost machine-like, until some publicity pops up, and then a "review" (likely a real person instead of a 'bot) re-examines the software and says "oh yeah, now it's OK!"
Yep. This is reason 5,281 that I won't buy Apple products. ;)
I do recall there might have been another game that was delayed on the App Store because of the Japanese flags from WWII were being used:
Here it is, mentioned in this article about the Syria game too: http://macdailynews.com/2013/01/08/apple-app-store-rejects-syrian-civil-war-ios-game/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+wordpress%2FxhfA+(MacDailyNews)
"Naval combat title Pacific Fleet's first App Store docking attempt was unsuccessful, after The Big A's App Store approval team decided the game's portrayal of the World War II conflict between America and Japan was discriminatory," Gilmour reports. "Although Pacific Fleet was eventually approved by Apple, the developer was forced to remove all Japanese flags from the game."
Mind you, at least Apple say why your game is rejected, unlike Valve...

Best thing I ever did was get rid of my iPhone.
