Most people seem to prefer the first one but I like Imperialism II much better. I love the New World stuff.
Great news indeed!!

Wow, really?  Almost everyone I know has long recommended the second one, which is why I skipped the first Imperialism title.

Can someone who bought/installed post what version it is?  The last patch I can find is 1.03.  I just want to verify that I can patch my CD version to the latest.  Thanks...

My version appears to be 1.0.0.0.

If you can rename ships and military units then you have version 1.03.

It won't be what it could have been then if I'd bought it
but in those days it wasn't 6 bux it was 80 bux and I had children to feed
and made less than half what I make now.
I just love me a socio/political/economic/exploring/military sandbox!

If you can rename ships and military units then you have version 1.03.

Or if you have an option in the game preferences to increase the cost of building forts.

Just what I need, another game. Despite all those games I purchased over the holidays that I haven't gotten around to playing, I am already buying another one.

Could it be something akin to a bit of the hair of the dog that bit you? I wonder.

Thanks for the heads-up, JarHead.

Its an addiction.  Revel in it or get help.
Those are your viable choices.  The other is non-viable.

It automatically jumps to fullscreen - no bars. I can't figure out how to window it, but it really isn't all that bad.

Thanks for the headsup Jarhead!

I'm rubbish at grand strategy games, but I've never sampled Imperialism, so I'm looking forward to this one. I hope the combat is all muskets and cannon.

A sort of grid-style TBS thing, a but like HoMM but a little more abstract.

It also uses a bit of a rock-paper-scissors approach.  Whoever enters the battle without all 3 is generally hosed!

I'm finally close to finishing the tutorials.  I have to say, I'm pretty damn impressed so far.

It boasts some good gameplay mechanics, and a surprising (or perhaps not-so-surprising) amount of depth.  Can't wait to complete the tutorials and try out a full campaign.

It is in a lot of ways, although there are still definitely some differences.

Aside from focusing on a single era, the most obvious way in which Imperialism II differs from the Civ games is that it's not quite as "sandboxy":  You can't found your own cities, and the map starts out being already populated by various nations/tribes (although you do still have to discover/explore the New World).  In that respect, the game is actually much closer to the Total War series -- which is not a bad thing.

Yep.

They're at the very top of the tech tree's naval branch.  They're butt-clenchingly expensive to build, but also very powerful (supposedly -- I haven't found out for myself yet).

Thanks.

There is no DOSBOX folder within the game folders of either Imperialism or Imperialism II. Since both were made for Windows (95 & 98 IIRC), I would say DOSBOX wasn't necessary.

You're welcome.

I was gonna say, I think the game was released around 2000 (give or take a year), so I can't imagine DOSBOX would be needed.

Fellow Grogheads! I thought I would post a link to Diary of a Mad King - An Imperialism II AAR (http://www.aarcentral.com/phpbb3/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=15&sid=c762f9009f302569a69235272cc128dd), a sort of tutorial AAR I did a few years back. It offers some tips on how to play the game (and in this case lose!) for beginners. I still have the excellent, offical strategy guide so feel free to ask me questions here (or on my site) and I'll try to answer them.  :)
I also have a couple of Imperialism I graphic mods over there to make that game a little more pleasing to the eye.

No worries -- it was just such a novel turn of phrase, I couldn't resist commenting. Of course, now that I know it's possible to say this, the world seems a slightly darker place ...

Yeah, it appears it will be important to keep in mind that "Neutral Powers" are separated into two categories -- Minor Nations (Old World) and Tribes (New World) -- as they seem to work slightly differently.

I think Martok may be on to something here. I'm playing Shogun 2 FOTS and I finally get the British Trade Port so I can recruite Royal Marines. They're $2200 per unit--- Butt-Clinch follows. I can also build the "Warrior" class ironclad. They're $44,400 per unit. My whole digestive system involuntary clinches then. This may be the single most apt new descriptive term of 2013. But I think we need to come up with a way to shorten the term. Maybe a "B. Clinch", "Butt-Clin", a "Big B.C.", or a "Digitally Induced Wedgie"(DIW). I vote Martok gets to make the call. ;D

Yeah. I'm hoping the enemy gets a "Butt-Clinch" when they see it coming at them. My mistake. The correct cost is $14,400 each. Much better.
