On a separate note, I found a link to this video over at SimHQ. While the world of Freefalcon seems to be over, DCS is going strong, and stands poised to capture the modern flight sim market.
I love where they're going with this sim. The idea of a full-on electronic battlefield with human-controllable jets, helos, tanks, SAMs, etc is very intriguing. DCS isn't quite there yet, but the potential...this could be the sim we all dreamed of.
If there's a problem it's that the flight sim community in and of itself is small, and we are further splintered by a handful of really remarkable sims to fly nowadays. On the modern front you have DCS, BMS, and don't forget the dark horse of VRS with its recently released Tacpac, taking FSX into the combat flight sim realm. But you also have Rise of Flight and, to some extent Over Flanders Fields as definitive WW1 flight sims. The WW2 market is still alive and kicking with IL-2 continuing to dominate, some hardcore CloD fans, and BoB2.12 recently released.
I really haven't spent much time with DCS. The single-player experience is just crap compared to Falcon, but multiplayer is a whole other animal. Is there enough market to make multiplayer viable? I don't know. I mean, you have all this...stuff...sitting there in DCS ready to be used, but if you have 5 guys playing what's the point? What DCS needs is a world full of players like Aces High...a true MMO in modern combat. Again, the potential is there but I just don't know if there are enough of us at this point.
At any rate, it might be time for me to take a closer look at DCS. It seems like the ultimate sandbox to someone like me who dreams up scenarios all the time. Maybe it's time to dig into that editor and see if I can make it sing and dance.
It starts getting pretty interesting at around 11 minutes or so.

Don't forget, you can also play the ground war using the combined arms module. I doubt that it will be as detailed as Steel Beasts. But streamlined gameplay sound good as well. Imagine the thought of a ground pounder requesting for CAS then an A-10 or black shark player responds.
Unlike massive MP games like Battlefield 3, I like my flightsimming be done on a smaller scale.
I fly with the 476th Virtual Fighter Group (http://www.476vfightergroup.com/content.php) (callsign Yassy), which is a rather small group of dedicated guys flying DCS A-10C. They also had the Black Shark for a while, but decided against scattering the little group and focus on the A-10C.
We create missions, run a dedicated server and have a solid training system aided by knowledge of real life servicemen and the 'Boss' even works with A-10C's in real life! Lots of knowledge here!
There's always the idea of joining on events with other squadrons to make bigger events, but I am not too sure how well DCS will hold up. It still has some serious multiplayer issues where servers need to be reset frequently, disconnects and unable to connect to a server in the first place. They really need to fix this before a large scale MP community can begin to blossom.
As it is now, the small squads have enough trouble getting their own events run properly as it is with all these bugs and crashes.
This here might have been put on 'paper' too strongly, because you may get the impression that MP is severely broken, it is not. And the goings on of the squad are handled quite well without too much trouble MP wise, but still there are enough little bugs or situations as described above to make bigger events too big a gamble at this time.
There is nothing worse than to have created and organised a big event with many people only to have the MP side of things unwilling to cooperate on a technical level. :S
Another beef I have with Eagle Dynamics at the moment is their seeminly weird allocation of priorities.
There has been a period where new projects were announced left and right (P-51D, CA, FC3 and some military stuff) while there were still glaring issues with the released products (mainly A-10C) and the promised Nevada theatre was nowhere to be seen either.
Then a post was put online with apologies about Nevada and that they admitted work had been pretty much non existant on it for the last couple of months.
I am sure the new EDGE terrain engine will be fantastic once it hits release (probably within a module), but ED is always very silent about the why and what and status of things.
It has caused some grumbling in the community.
Nevertheless, the A-10C is a superbly done simulator and my first choice! Now with DCS World integration things have become much easier to maintain and update and the unified mission editor is getting better with each update (but for God's sake PLEASE add a 3D preview mode for placing units!!). :D
Flight Sims have always intriqued me but their complexity can be overwhelming. I bought A-10C Warthog for $9.99 on Steam during the holiday sale but find myself struggling in 'game' mode, no less even attempting the full sim mode. I can see that to master this sort of sim I would have to pretty much dedicate myself to this and only this for quite a long time. Its complexity is both its strength and weakness. I watched Toonces' video...what an awesome concept, thanks for sharing. I just wish I could be a part of it but I'm not sure I am ready to dedicate the time and effort needed to compete at that level.
What sort of DRM are they using?

Pretty fantastic. Setting up the weather in the mission editor -- I mean with the weather varying by systems over the whole map -- seems so unbelievably cool.
I'm sure I'll get to DCS sooner or later. I have Lock-on.

It was Online Activation stuff when I purchased the
Black Shark 2 upgrade to the original BS. :-\ I'm not sure if that's changed since they've added the new DCS world system, but I'd be surprised if it had.
I've wanted to get their A-10 title but I don't plan on delving into it before getting a new HOTAS system. I'm not afraid of learning the button pushing, especially in a more familiar American cockpit layout, and don't have to get used to flying with the computer-controlled trim system that doesn't account for your deadzone setting in BS2. :-[
For those who don't know, DCS = Digital Combat Simulator (http://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/).
Yes. I think I also need a new HOTAS. I've been playing A-10 for quite some time but if I stop for a while or play Falcon, I forget the keys. With HOTAS there's less memorizing. and DCS has a clickable cockpitt. not a lot keys to remember unlike Lock-On
I spent about 1.5 hours configuring the controls for the SU-25T in DCS. They could not have made it more non-intuitive. BoB2 might be the only sim with a worse interface.
I still can't get it to do what I want it to do. I'm sorry but making a modern flight sim without a clickable cockpit is just not acceptable in 2012.

That's because the SU-25T is still the same as the one from Lock On. Just like Flaming Cliffs 3 hasn't got clickable cockpits. In fact they are not sims from 2012. They are just flight dynamics and graphical upgrades of old sims. ;)
Their newer offerings like A-10C, Black Shark and P-51D all have clickable cockpits.
It's becoming a bit like what Steel Beasts is for Armor simming; it too has some fully realised player controlled vehicles complete with interiors and weapons systems, while others are controllable, but have no interiors modelled.
What exactly is bothering you with the control options menu? I always found it rather intuitive? The only thing that got my time and again was trying to find the menu to assign the Axis. :D
Yeah, the nearly hidden Axis menus were what stumped me, momentarily. I didn't find it to be terribly intuitive, doing anything past basic key binding. The nearly hidden Axis menu is an example.
Yep DCS World's Flaming Cliffs module is just a Lock On port. So I avoid it for the same reasons as you (Toonces) stated above.
The free Su is also not at par with the full-blown DCS offerings.

I'm glad you mentioned BOB2 as I picked it up over xmas and have made near zero progress with the configuration of my warthog/saitek rudder/IR5. I've found surprisingly few resources on this topic considering the reputation you mentioned. Any pointers you can provide would be greatly appreciated!

Have you tried the manual? I was the editor for 2.08 and I'm pretty sure there was a section on options and keybindings. Also a lot of options are in BDG.txt so look at that section too.
What's the latest version of Lock On: Flaming Cliffs? Didn't they just re-re-release a new updated one, again?
I need to check out the feature list on it, as I recall the original was a nice middle ground between the average flight sim and their study sims. The complaint being that there was no random mission generator years ago - wonder if they added one (like they did in Black Shark 2)?
FC 3 is the new version and is an upgrade to integrate FC into the DCS World architecture.
The way it now works is that DCS World takes care of the environment and all the modules (like FC3 now) add controllable platforms and sometimes new functionality. But DCS World is the core of the sim.
It can be updated seperately from the modules and vice versa. So regarding mission editing, everything that is present in DCS World you can use in the FC 3 module.
FC3 still is the middle ground between a study sim and a casual sim experience indeed, but you can now at least fly with, or make missions for flying with the study sims like BS 2 and A-10C, because all the module are tied together and are multiplayer compatible via DCS World.
(I guess this can be a catch-all thread for DCS sims?)
Right then, chaps. It won't be long before I'm ready to dive into Black Shark. What would you say is the best way to get started? Will the in-game training scenarios teach me everything I need, for example, or am I going to need to watch tutorials on Youtube or something as well?

There are only training vids in the game. I suggest you find the copies of them, on YouTube, and take notes of the order in which the button-pushing happens for some of the essentials (attack run setup, etc). Someone loaded them to YouTube awhile back because the in-game video player blows. I couldn't find the pause/reverse commands or anything - it just played straight through - and the info can come pretty quickly.
Yes too bad they stuck with the video's from BS1 and never made narrated training scenario's like in A-10C and P-51D.
But the video's are still a great starting point in learning the BS. And RTFM still applies. ;)

That's a nice & quick tutorial on how to get into some action, although I'd think that some clarification of some things would probably help. Despite all the tutorials, I still had to get some practice time with the weapons setup motions before I became comfortable with how to quickly switch between modes, and which could be skipped on short notice. In other words, I kinda improvised my own methodology on weapons control after playing around with some different settings and getting a feel for how everything worked together. I'm guessing that's how most everyone's experience went.. or do some of you do it "by the book" every time?
Sad thing is.. if I take even a short break from the game (which I do with all of them quite often), I have to relearn the motions, although it comes a lot faster after the intial hump.
I watched some of the producer's videos (that guy says "I'm gonna go ahead and.." way too often). The video on the trimming system has really put me at ease; I thought that if you don't centre the stick within 0.5 seconds the trim wouldn't be set correctly at all. I can live with accepting input+trim after 0.5 seconds.
Ack!
I just bought A-10C today, since the DCS half-price sales are still running.
But the damned download speed blows - not to mention you gotta download four different ~1.8GB DCS world files, along with another specific one for your game. My dead granny moves faster than this!
I see there's a torrent file, which would probably be faster, but I've already downloaded some so no sense in starting at the beginning (and hoping enough people have the torrent hosted too!). >:( Ahhh well.. doubt I'll play this until I get a decent HOTAS anyway.

Download via torrent is more efficient.
Yep. I was able to torrent (is that also a verb now?) the DCS World and P51 files twice as fast as the mirrored versions would D/L.
I figured it would be, after seeing that there were something like 90 people hosting it. But I was halfway through d/l'ing it directly by then, so no biggie.
I'm busy playing Phantom Leader right now anyway (and still need a HOTAS).
Speaking of HOTAS.. what's a decent inexpensive set? Does everyone still recommend one of the CH ones? I used to have an old Saitek X45 years ago, but didn't play flight sims for quite awhile and sold it. Don't think I want to splurge on the newer version.
You can get a new x52 on Amazon for around $105 and a used x45 for around $55.

http://www.amazon.com/Thrustmaster-T-Flight-Hotas-Flight-Playstation-3/dp/B001CXYMFS/ref=pd_sim_sbs_vg_3
I still have my old x45 but no room on my desk right now. Instead I've been using a cordless Freedom 2.4, not a bad little stick at all with 10 buttons, a hat, and throttle slider. And no wires!

Yep. That's the same one in the third link in my post above. It looks like a good starter HOTAS and it's running about $49 over there at Amazon right now.
Also, I can't believe that the Freedom 2.4 is now selling for over $200 new! They must have become quite scarce. I think I paid about $80 for mine 'back in the day'.
I am using that HOTAS X.
Thanks. It was the Thrustmaster I was thinking of, indeed.
I had an issue or two with my old Saitek. For one, the pinky button combined with the hand guard on the back of the joystick was too small for my large mits so my fingers were a bit too cramped. Looks like the Thrustmaster one is affordable and doesn't have a hand guard. I don't need the excessive buttons, either, as I just end up forgetting what commands I have mapped to the buttons when there are too many.

Some joystick software allows you to print out a diagram of the stick with function labels. If not, just print out a picture from the internet and draw some arrows connected to your own labels.

I do draw a diagram of them. Pain in the ass but it helps. Until I lose 'em and have to redo it. ;D
I kinda prefer not having a bazillion buttons on the HOTAS, though, or else I feel the need to map something to every single one. I still prefer to have a lot of stuff on the keyboard alone, so no biggie. It's up to whether I play enough sims to justify buying a TrackIR, though. My flight simming usually just comes in widely-spaced spurts so that's still up in the air.
So.. I'm on the verge of diving back into the DCS stuff, having both A-10C and Black Shark 2 now, along with the Thrustmaster HOTAS I just picked up. But I'll probably mess around with the freebie SU-25T for a bit first in order to settle in easily before going through the learning process (or re-learning in the case of BS2) in the "study" sims.
Has anyone fired up Flaming Cliffs 3? I suppose it's just the much-upgraded old LOMAC game, but I do kinda miss the online dogfights I had years ago with it. Now that all this stuff is integrated into one multi-player dealio, it sounds even more enticing. Running a SAM/AAA unit on the ground, with Combined Arms also has it's appeal.
I'm messing around with a campaign in FC3...the SU-29 I think. Only a couple of missions in but I really am enjoying the simplicity of the controls. Having A-10C - I always wanted all those bells and whistles - but it's so hard to get in to...trying to remember all the controls. With FC3, I'm transported back to the kind of sims I used to love and played quite often.
It looks fantastic, it plays fantastic and scratches my simulation itch without being overloaded.
It's not "simple"...just there's a lot less to go on than A-10C (which I do love but my heed explodes when I play)
I haven't played MP.
I don't like FC because of the fact that you NEED to memorize the keys. In A-10C I did not memorize a lot because the cockpit is click able. So much easier to remember an on screen button to press than a key combination.
So to get FC3, do you also need to buy LockOn: Modern Air? It says that one the page, yet I don't see a product page on the DCS web site.. sucks to have to buy two full price games to play the one..
I honestly can't remember, but that sounds like something I heard/read. I have Lock On and I'm pretty sure I had to jump up in the loft and get it to install/play FC3
Having said that - I'm pretty sure you can get Lock On pretty cheap.

Yes. The info page mentions that you must have either
LOMAC or
Flaming Cliffs 2 (which also required LOMAC IIRC). I'm sure this is due to Ubisoft owning the publishing rights to the original LOMAC, so DCS has to sell their upgrades as add-ons.
I really need to get a TrackIR but have been waffling about dropping the chunk of cash on one. Never having used them, does anyone have recommendations as to model, cost, etc?
I couldn't recommend them - but I am apparently in the minority...everyone else I know raves about them.
I have bought 2 (or3?) and sold each one afterwards for a loss.
So why did I not get on with them?
I just couldn't get used to the motions. For driving sims, I tended to steer towards the way I was looking...not always a good thing.
I could never seem to get a suitable sensitivity. For example...A-10C. I tried and tried and tried to get a sensitivity that allowed me to look around the cockpit with only moving my head slightly (the idea of the product) but at the same time keeping it "stiff" enough that I could look down at the panels and click the buttons. Either it was too sensitive in that I couldn't hold my head steady enough to click a single button or it was too stiff and I had to break my neck to look around the cockpit...I tried everything I could to get it working just right.
During daytime I couldn't use it. Not even with the curtains shut because of sunlight. It played havok with the receiver.
Like I said, I am definitely in the minority. But I've bought two. Sold the first one pretty quickly for a loss (that was a used V3 TrackIR) and bought another one (used V4 TrackIR) a year or two later and actually kept that one for a year trying to get iot to work just right for me...to no avail.
One thing to note that may make a difference is I never had the Pro Clip version...I was using the T piece with the reflectors on a hat. So maybe I'd have got a better experience had I bought the clip version.
I am a bit concerned about the sensitivity and head-turning situation. It's really what makes me hesitate most, especially since I have an old neck injury, near the base of my skull, that tends to pinch nerves and give me a headache in certain situations. :-\
It could get ugly if it's too touchy, and I'd be gambling the price of a TrackIR if I took the leap.

A few months ago I got the lock-on disk for 9 dollars on Amazon (or maybe, just maybe it was ebay).
There's a downloadable edition available as well.
There are different profiles out there for Track IR and you can make you own as well.. I know what you mean by crazy.. when my Track IR switches to 'default', and I look down in the cockpit, the view wobbles back and forth.. But as soon as I load the profile that I 'want'.. All is well.. movement is very smooth, and it really enhances the immersion. I really love being able to move my face right up close to the Cockpit!
Is flaming Cliffs part of DCS World? Or something totally separate?
Waiting for the imminent release of UH-1 Huey...some say maybe tomorrow.

Flaming Cliffs
3 brings Flaming Cliffs into DCS World as a module. Think of DCS:World as the base game. Everything else related is a module that plugs into DCS:World. It's sort of like DLC, but not really DLC.
Flaming Cliffs 1 and 2 were not compatible with other DCS products until DCS:World and Flaming Cliffs 3. FC3 allows you to go online and play multiplayer against someone flying any other DCS:World module...A-10, Blackshark 2, etc.
You have to have LOMAC to install and use FC3.
I've been thinking of picking it up as well, as I have a real urge to fly the MiG-29 lately.
Flaming Cliffs 3 is great. :)
Nefaro - I told you I was just about the only person in the world I know of that didn't like TrackIR ;D
I had no idea Huey was being released so soon. Does anyone know if it's a study sim or "lighter"? (I'll go and check over at DCS)
Pure study sim quality, ala Blackshark.
Honestly, I don't know why I'm going to get it since I don't really spend much time playing DCS...but I'm going to get it. ;D

Excellent...and +1 on why you're getting it. I don't spend as much time as I'd like playing these games - but I do want DCS to continue and will continue to support them if I can - I like their progress and like the way they are heading.
Does it make sense to get DCS World 1.2.3 now and the upcoming patch will bring it from 1.2.3 to 1.2.4
or will it be a 1.2.4 full release, and i have to download all those GB again?

No idea. I do think they have streamlined the update process. It used to be a bit of a mare with manually downloading various files, but it seems to be incorporated in the DCS World environment now

Not sure to be honest - but there should not be any problems that I'm aware of with buying A-10C from other locations. I do know because I bought the BS2
upgrade as opposed to the full release I had to have BS1 installed - but that's about the extent of the issues I'm aware of with any DCS product

I hope so - as I don't have any. I can't see why not. If we can fly the dog that is the KA-50 at all - and also without pedals, then I'm sure the Huey would be fine.

Will my A10 (Steam version) work in DCS ... I've read in a forum entry that claimed: just display the CD# in Steam and entering it in DCW would do the trick?
I am waiting for the Huey too and want to be prepared ;-)
do you gents think its possible to fly the Huey without owning paddles ?
When I installed the A-10 module, it automatically detected my Steam version and automatically activated.
I'm more interested in the MiG-21. But I guess it will be easy pickings for the F-15s. Lol!
^ I so desperately want the Fishbed!
Any ideas when that is due to complete? I wa following it for a while

I've been thinking of picking it up as well, as I have a real urge to fly the MiG-29 lately.
One of the most beautiful fighter aircraft evah, IMO. So what if it has short legs and a small payload, it's smexy! :D

Does it make sense to get DCS World 1.2.3 now and the upcoming patch will bring it from 1.2.3 to 1.2.4

Same.
I got the BS2 'Upgrade' version from DCS quite awhile back. You still have to install the Steam version of BS1 and run it at least once before the Upgrade installer will detect it. After that, you can uninstall the Steam version of BS1, IIRC.
I've been messing around with A-10C a bit lately, and learning the how of it. It's a fair bit easier to learn than Black Shark was but that may just be due to not having Cyrillic-labelled cockpit instruments, being more familiar with US aircraft avionics, and not having to constantly d!ck with the trim (as you do with the Shark).
But I definitely need a TrackIR at this point. SA has always been a problem in flight sims, and these hardcore 'study' sims just exacerbate that problem. Looks like I'll be shelling out sometime in the near future for one before I get too deep into A-10C and BS2. I may mess with the Su-25T and Strike Fighters 2 in the meantime, if I need a fix.
I saw a thread on the SimHQ page that said Flaming Cliffs 3 is going up to $50 with the release of 1.2.4, which should be out along with Huey any day now. So, if you're sitting on the fence like me, it might be worth purchasing now rather than waiting.
Personally, I think I'm going to pass. It's too hard to go back to a non-clickable cockpit in a fast-mover at this point in my simming life, and I have the Su-25 to goof off with if I have an urge to fly Russian.
I just feel like FC3 is a step backwards, for me, at this point. I'm not suggesting it's not a fine product. And I reserve the right to change my mind whenever I feel like it!
50 dollars and you have to buy the other game as well? I'll wait for a sale.. will have plenty of flying to do on my hands with Warthog and Blackshark..

To be fair, some of the more mundane workload isn't present in the non-interactive cockpit sims so it can also be refreshing. I too enjoy a clickable 'pit just because it's more immersive and can be easier to memorize where a few essentials are, but the study sims also tend to have many more steps to follow when doing anything but flying the stick.
And why the hell would they raise the price by $10 after an update?! There better be some serious content additions in it! If any of the dev team have suggested such a thing, it kinda turns me off the purchase either way. It makes me wonder if they're just gonna turn it into a "Flaming Cliffs 4" re-release in an attempt to get previous owners to shell out anew, or if such a re-release will be coming soon anyway. So maybe buyers should wait & see how this turns out (if a packaging adjustment really is in consideration). This is all a quandary because I've really been considering picking up FC3 lately but if they pull a Matrix and decide to release it as FC4 (for one example), I don't wanna be stuck with a just-purchased yet outdated FC3. I've done that before. >:(
DCS: Huey is out. 50 smackeroos. (which is a fair price IMHO but not for everybody)
And if you didn't pick up FC3 back when your old buddy Toonces told you to, it will now cost you a cool 40 clams.

I'm pretty sure that I read at SimHQ or the official forum that FC3 is the last of the Flaming Cliff franchise, since its "own" by UbiSoft and Eagle now have FCx included in DCS World.
I was trying to post info about this last night but I couldn't get connected to Grogheads for some reason
I expect I will buy this if for nothing else than to support them - they do create some fantastic sims.
I'm not "overly" happy about it, what with the plethora of incredible war beasts out there they could've modelled - but they aren't catering just for me. ;)
