As some of you may know, I am a ADD wargamer. I jump around way too much and this tends to lead to unfinished campaigns and games. Anyway, I have had SH V for a long time and because of the DRM I shelved it..... then got it back out and tried it and shelved it again. SH III with GWX 3 + SH3 Commander is still the best sub experience out there with the installed mods below. Flakmonkey just released his Interiors 2.0 which now includes the forward torpedo room of the Type VII and with added character models (he is working on the aft torpedo room). Still a great simming experience and one that trumps my flying ones.

Have you played around much with a modded SHV? I wonder how that would stack up...any GWX mods for SHV? Where does SHIV fall in the spectrum?
I also have gaming ADD, and would gladly go back to SH 3 at some point. Do they work with the Steam version? How easy are they to install? Where is the best place to get them?

I played around with some mods for SHV, but to me it just did not feel the same. There is not a super mod for SHV, however someone has put together a collection of them. I also prefer SH3 because you are not limited to one sub type and I heavily use SH3 Commander. It just seemed less of a sim to me, but it sure looks nice.
I have a modded version of SH4 and it is on par with SH3 I can give you a list of what I use. The only thing about SH4 is that SH3 Commander was not remade for SH4. It adds a lot of options and manages your careers for you (external mod). But the experience is one par with one another. I wish someone would mod more compartments for the Gato or Balao class.

Yes, GWX 3 and the other mods do work with Steam. They are simple to use because it uses the JSGME - Generic Mod Enabler. When you install GWX3 it will automatically be placed in the root of your SH3 folder along with a MODS folder. You simply unzip and drop the mods above in the MODS folder and then run the JSGME.exe to enable them in the order above and you are off and running. The version of JSGME that comes with GWX3 is out of date but usable. You can find that update link on the subsim forum. Update it before installing the mods.
I would also highly recommend using the SH3 Commander which gives you a ton of customizable options and will also manage your careers and data for you.
subsim.com - http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/forumdisplay.php?f=195 (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/forumdisplay.php?f=195) is the best place to get the mods and the GWX mod can be found at http://www.thegreywolves.com/ (http://www.thegreywolves.com/).

Forgot to mention.... you will need the 4gb patch and the higher res patch as well.... I can post links to both if needed.
There is another mod I recommend, but can be tricky to install (Supplement to V16B1).

That's just too much 'Mod Soup' for my tastes. I got sucked into jacking with all that wayy too much in SH4 and I ended up dicking around with the mods more than playing the game at one point. So it was time for my own personal intervention. ;D

Lol... I've been there. I've been using this setup for a while with no issues. I am content with the mods so I have let a lot of them be..... like you said, you can spend hours trying to get it not to crash. Good thing is that the JSGME makes it easy.... but once I got it set, I have been content.

I agree with your sentiment on the DRM. The good news is that today it has been stripped.
(the boxed/digital download version. I don't know about the Steam version)

Unless you've played it with some heavy mods, I wouldn't hold it against you, if you still think it blows. It does, and it's really not a matter of opinion. It's just way too buggy, the AI downright horrible and compared to SH3 it barely deserves being described as a simulation. Arcade game would be more appropriate.
However, with some heavy modding SH5 goes from arcade to a true simulation, the best I've ever played, including SH3. And I really enjoyed SH3.
It comes down to personal preferences of course, and I'll admit that SH3 still trumps SH5 when it comes to:
A - The dynamic campaign
B - Different type of boats, from Type II to IX
On:
A - Installing the Open Horizon mod, not only extend the campaign to 1945, it also adds more mission types - a must have IMO
B - Still only variants of the type VII boat available throughout the campaign in SH5. A shame for sure, but I believe more boats will be added in the future. At least the mod community has addressed this issue from time to time, and it seems to me both the interest and will to fix this is there.
On the upside:
TheDarkWraith (over at subsim) has made some crucial mods, dealing with bugs, interface and the AI.
Installing those adds, among other: optional SH3 interface, Gramophone/radio, Captains log where you can add your own entries, real navigation and an AI that will actually try to hurt you.
IMO, his mods (see my MOD soup below) is what turns SH5 into a sim.
Then, beside Open Horizon, there are mods to enhance the environmental effects in- and outside the boat.
Stormys DBSM - adds various crew sounds/speech
Dynamic Environment - If you think the vanilla graphics are nice, you should really try this one.
For what it's worth, here is my mod soup (a little outdated, but stable):

Good thread. I've been wanting a reason to give SHV another go. I ran into difficulties with getting some of the mods installed correctly the first time I tried (I picked SHV up just last year). I'll give it another go with your list-O-mods Atilla.
For SH5, I pretty much just threw in
DarkWraith's UIs (improved SH5 version is my preferred)
Open Horizons
Torpedo Speed Fix
Might Fine Crew Mod w/ Beards
..and I was off. Only a small bit of mod soup and it didn't take long before I was up & running. Despite the old DarkWraith's install instructions being a bit screwy at the time. I've made it a rule to avoid too many mods, unless someone spends all the time creating a big compilation with the ones I want in it (which I still end up having to re-mod myself, usually, anyway).
DarkWraith's UIs was one of the mods that I recall having difficulties with. Talk about cryptic instructions. I obviously didn't install it correctly, and never managed to get it working. From what I could gather, besides the bug fixes, DarkWraith's UIs was the one must have mod for SHV. Is this still the case? Has the mod install routine been improved?

I left a more descriptive and understandable set of instructions for DW's UI mod, over at Wargamer awhile back. There was at least one definite screw-up in his original instructions so I went through and noted down the steps in more detail (and in the correct order this time). I
think this has helped at least one person get it running since I posted it.
C&P from Wargamer post on how to install DarkWraith's UI mod for SH5:The thread link is at the bottom, as the original post may be easier to read.
QuoteI'm posting a quick tip on how to install DarkWraith's NewUI's as I believe the Menu.txt file, that you're supposed to choose for your game language, isn't mentioned as needing to be also placed into the mod. I've had some questions as to installing it so I wanted to clarify a couple things and hopefully make it a bit easier.
>>
Firstly, if your game has started acting screwy in any way after activating and/or deactivating a mod, you might consider reinstalling the vanilla game over again (including deleting leftovers in the install folder - aside from JSGME's "MODS" folder).
The install notes are pretty straightforward:
>>> To install this mod correctly do the following:
>Navigate to where you unzipped the mod to and open it up. Select the 'MODS' folder and right click on it. Select copy. Navigate to your '\Ubisoft\silent hunter 5\' folder and open it up. Right click in an empty area and select paste. Enable 'NewUIs_TDC_6_9_0_ByTheDarkWraith' via JSGME FIRST then enable any additional add-on mods you want (this assumes you setup JSGME to use the 'MODS' folder as default)
>>> Also install appropriate dial.dds file to the mod.
>select appropriate 'Dials.dds' (or use your own!) and place in 'MODS\NewUIs_TDC_6_9_0_ByTheDarkWraith\data\Menu\Gui'. Do this before enabling mod!
If there is a folder inside called 'TDC' then you have to copy the files in that folder to 'MODS\NewUIs_TDC_6_9_0_ByTheDarkWraith\data\Menu\Gui\TDC'. Do this before enabling mod!
The install notes are in the wrong order. The second paragraph starting with
>>> Also install appropriate dial.dds file to the mod.
should be done before you enable the mod, and it's cleaner to do before you drop it into your MODS folder. If you do that after enabling your mod.. you may not get a fortunate result.
1) - Dials Clarification:
When you extract the mod's zip file, you'll get the "MODS" folder (containing the base and lots of optional add-ons for the mod) and two other folders. As stated in the second paragraph > open the "Dials" folder , open the appropriate game language version folder(i.e. American/German) , then open the folder with the appropriate measurement system you want to use (Imperial or Metric). Copy the "dials.dds" file, there, into "MODS\NewUIs_TDC_6_9_0_ByTheDarkWraith\data\Menu\Gui" and overwrite if need be.
2) Adding the newer menu file (that was missing in the install notes):
>Open the other extra folder named "Text", open the appropriate language folder, and copy the "Menu.txt" file inside to "MODS\NewUIs_TDC_6_9_0_ByTheDarkWraith\data\Menu" folder. Overwrite if asked.
3) Cut & Paste the "MODS" folder over to the base install location of SH5 (i.e. C:\Ubisoft\silent hunter 5) and the MODS folder will merge with your already existing JSGME folder there (you did already have JSGME installed there didn't you?!)
4)Run JSGME and activate "NewUIs_TDC_6_9_0_ByTheDarkWraith". All the other NewUIs options there are just optional add-ons so you can check the info on them out later, at the Subsim forums, if you want. You only need that one.
If you don't see the new charts in the upper left corner, the officer bar at the bottom, etc then your folder organization is wrong in your \SH5\MODS folder. Make sure the file path to the main mod like this:
[base install]= "[C:\Ubisoft\silent hunter 5\]MODS\NewUIs_TDC_6_9_0_ByTheDarkWraith".
The base mod may have ended up with two MODS folders, one inside the base one, if you unzipped the mod directly into your MODS folder and not your base SH5 install location. In that case just Cut the inner MODs folder, navigate back to the base install location and paste there, then overwrite&merge as needed.
******
I prefer the "Improved SH5 NewUIs" version and it's the one used in this example. It doesn't hurt that it's also the most reliable one in-game too. While much of the UI will look familiar compared to vanilla, you'll have lots of extras and options now - way more interface options at your fingertips.
Hopefully this helps you see where the extra files are to be placed. I'd think that between not getting those in, or properly, and having the folder structure wrong, is probably the most common issues causing problems with the installation itself.

Sorry for the wall of text, but I figured it's best to have an extra copy somewhere because I don't want to have to go back and work that through all over again if the old post disappears.
Well I've decided to give SH5 a go. I've been wanting to get into a simulation game at some point and flying sims just don't do it for me. I know, I know the earlier version are better but I don't care. I'm going down with the ship on this one. :D
