I have to agree, although Rome is a close second but I think Shogun 2's campaign map puts it over the top. I hope that Rome II will continue to build on the awesomeness of Shogun 2 while bringing back all that I loved about Rome.
Now I am leaning towards firing it up again...it's been a long time. Perhaps I'll finally try out the Rise of the Samurai campaign...want to try out the new Otomo clan in the regular campaign too. Gah too many choices.

I'll admit I'm not as keen on the FotS campaign (anti-gunpowder snob here!), but the rest looks good. Now I've just gotta get the "new" machine up & running...

I am torn between so many titles right now...
I picked up the Rise of the Samurai expansions almost 6 months ago, IIRC, and haven't even fired it up yet.
Too much lined up! It's to the point where I get confused because I'm not sure which I'm in the mood for, since there are so many.
^Me too. But I am leaning towards Rise of the Samurai right now because it is pretty unique amongst all my choices.
I'm working my way through FOTS right now using Darth Mod 4.4 which really ups the AI capabilities alot. It's my second play of this campaign. This time I'm gonna get me some Gatling Guns & take-on everybody. ROTS Never got my TW juices flowing a whole lot but it's got it's merits. I'll admit to being confused by the clan names in all the Shogun campaigns and often don't know how's on my side and who's not.

Same here. It is yet another reason (aside from limited money & time) why I try very hard to only purchase games I'm absolutely certain I'll play/enjoy.
Try the Fall of the Samurai campaign using traditional units. Gunpowder units can be powerful in the open but will rout when surprised by melee units at short range at night or in rough terrain.

Steam tells me that I have played 75 hours of Shogun but I honestly don't remember playing for so long. I am hoping that Rise of the Samurai can unleash the same kind of magic that Lords of the Rising Sun did for me 20 years ago.
Shogun 2 also has a lot of depth and variety. It's definitely one of those 'stranded on a desert island' games. I could probably play for 250+ hours and not explore everything. And the tech tree is the best of the series...a work of art, fun to use and fun to explore.
I found Rise of the Samurai to be pretty interesting. I really liked how less developed the strat map looked compared to the Sekgoku Jidai period portrayed in the main game. There was a bit of a learning curve to it as most of the buildings and many of the strategic units are quite different from the main game as well. Bribery is a good way to get ahead in ROTS.
There are some other different diplomatic units too eh? I read that it is possible to get regions over to the player's side through diplomacy and never have to fight, moreso than in other TW games.

The diplomacy in Shogun 2 TW was definitely an improvement as allying with others actually
worked for fairly long stretches of time, if you didn't piss them off, unlike previous TWs where they just seemed to increasingly hate you no matter what. While S2TW's realm divide hit would do the same once it activated, that generally didn't happen until you were pretty damn big and on the verge of utterly steamrolling everyone else, and even then your staunchest allies took a little while to turn on you. So it wasn't near as bad as previous TWs, despite some of the modifiers for certain actions being a little over- or under-valued.

Yeah, that's what I was referring to. you get a priest type guy called a Sou. Functions similarly to the monk but has a few extra abilities thrown in. He can get enemy agents to retire and can cause a province to revolt.
There's a ninja/spy type guy called a Monomi. Does the ninja/saboteur stuff and also acts as a scout.
There's a geisha type unit. I can't remember the word for it. Shiroboyoshi or something like that. (but that makes no sense in Japanese). Can increase general's loyalty, seduce enemy units/generals, and demoralize enemy armies.
There's an administrator type guy called a Junsatsushi. he can convince neutral clans to become join your clan. He stops saboteurs, and he can bribe armies/agents.
Is it good to go right off the bat or are you guys modding the game?

Geek there is not much in the way of mods the Shogun 2...only 3 or 4.

I'd suggest playing S2TW vanilla at least once. It's fun of it's own accord and doesn't really need a lot extra IMO.
IIRC, my last mods used were some that slowed down the speed of units (although didn't CA slow them down in a later update too?) and one that makes the Realm Divide set in more slowly so that my allies didn't go from best buds to complete hatred and wardec in the span of 3 seasons. Still that last bit will give you a nice challenge when you're coming in on the last stretch to victory, with your hair on fire.
The Administrator-type guy that bribes provinces over to your control can only do so if the province is of the same Family Alignment as yours. There're 3 familys in the game and all factions belong to one of them. If the province is the same as yours, you can "Request Alliegance" for a price and if successful, it's yours. If it's of another Family Alignment, no request can be made. The characters that can do this after a couple of experience gains can become very powerful and early on, you can expand quickly this way. However, if the province is part of a multi-province faction, requesting alliegance is considered an act of war and you'll have to cancel it or fight them even if allied with them. So as the factions start to enlarge, this unit becomes less valuable. He can still bribe rival agents out of the game though.
In the later stages, I found him to be useful for administering provinces when I didn't have enough family member/Generals to go around.
Sounds like a pretty interesting dynamic and unique in the series.
