Post by: spelk on January 29, 2013, 03:51:10 PM
Dunno whether anyone has already seen this over at Polygon, but they've done a potted history of Battlefront.

Don't know anything about Combat Mission and I've heard of Battlefront.  That was a pretty good story.  Thanks for posting the link.

Sucks. Less content.  Less info on screen. Does not feel realistic.

I'll blow your mind even further, I wouldn't know Steel Panthers if I tripped over it.  I didn't have a computer until I got married in late 1999.  The first game I bought was Civ II.  The list of games I have played dedicated to war exclusively is short.

And Battlefront's Combat Mission as well. wasn't the first one download only? Cause I had to burn my own disk.. Then I think BtB is a real disk with a huge Manual.. I know I had them both..

I played the Tactics II boardgame and Panzer General AND Allied General to completion on my Playstation, so, they let me come play here.  It's my stellar personality and witty repartee that keeps'em coming back :)

I am pretty certain I received the first game on cd.  I remember seeing it advertised in some computer magazine and placed an order not knowing what to expect.  When I received it I happened to be out of work so I played the game to death:). Loved it.

Maybe I made a 'backup' of it then.... I'll have to look again..

I remember loving

Steel Panthers..

Civ II

Red Baron, Aces of the Pacific, Aces of Europe, Aces of the Deep

The Perfect General II

I found that ship one the other day that NWS has a mod for, was it like Steel Navy Battles of the Atlantic or something like that..

Have some game called Across the Rhein or something like that, and it was too much for PC's of the time to run it properly. think you went from master map to FPS type tank battles (can't remember)

Think I have most of these disks down cellar.. but doubt they'd work.. lol... the Sierra games are all Floppies!

Close Combat a bridge to far was my first exposure to MP on the internet.. the good old Microsoft Zone... boy what a blast that was!

No the first one has a CD version published by CDV.

I remember playing it again recently and never really got into it anymore.
Same with Steel Panthers.

Yep, only CD, by mail order.  Had some sort of copy protection on it.  I remember I could copy the disk OK.  But the copy was only good for the CD check for running the game.  I could not use the copy for a new install.

Looks good.  I need something else beside Angry Birds and backgammon for my tablet.  Seems you have to get it from Amazon though, not available from Google.  Thanks for the advice.

The demo for Combat Mission was download as was a second demo. I remember getting it up and running about an hour before I had to go to work and burning-up the road getting back home to it that night. I remember also checking the sites every day for new mods to the game. One added cows in the very green fields but I couldn't stand it because no matter where you moved the camera, the cows were always looking at you. And I felt sorry for them when a 105mm barrage landed all over them.

So, it was a realism mod then.  ;D

...or am I the only one who feels like the cows are always looking at me...?
