Good luck!  Hopefully you won't lose power, etc.  I'd offer to help shovel some of the snow, but looks like you're a bit farther north than me (northern VA).

East coast winter...I'll take -25 and a little snow any day.

^Remember us fondly when they finally hack our frozen corpses out of the ice during spring thaw. Maybe there will be a NatGeo feature showing how scientists deduced our lifestyles from the personal effects found nearby.

On a side note they say the wind is going to be strong as well which is what could cause power outages.

Not that anyone will be surprised, but here is an off topic question, if you work from home, how do you get any work done?!?!  I don't think I have the required intestinal fortitude to force my self to do any work if I was just kickin' it in my pj's.  I mean, I'm moving in three weeks and I don't have NOTHIN' packed yet.  Instead, I'm on this here computer wasting time.

Believe it or not, the hard part is *not* working.

The converse to working from home is that you never leave the office.

I don't really care for it. It's too easy to put in a load of laundry, do dishes or other stuff like that. I'm not really tempted to play a game or goof off. I feel more guilty about that. As far as wasting time on the computer, I could do that just as much at the office.

I'll bet even factoring in a load of laundry you still check work stuff at night and on weekends. I'll bet you put in more time working than you think.

Of course it's not scientific, but I just heard this morning on the radio that 80% of office workers time is spent on goofing off at the computer.

That's always been part of my job. My iPhone is covered by work, but it comes with a lot of strings. If someone's website goes down, they don't care if it's 7AM Sunday and you're only on the first cup of coffee.

I used to be the 24/7 guy for the company I worked for and I got a call on Christmas morning.  A lady at one of our properties had ants and insisted that I come right then.  My (ex)wife was the office manager and neither one of us could get ahold of the owner.  So I went.

I mean this in all seriousness.  If I was going to be stuck at home because of this storm, I would let my office get nice and cold, I'd bundle up, and I'd play Skyrim.

Talk about immersive!

I'm not joking- I really would do that.

But, I think a lot of you guys are going to lose power from all the wind, so maybe cooling off the house prematurely isn't such a hot idea (ooooh I made a nice pun there).

Yeah that is not going to be very good especially if the utility crews can't get to problems until the roads are clear.  I'm also worried about any trees and poles that were weakened by hurricane Sandy coming the rest of the way down.

I just got the snowblower back from the shop yesterday- THANK CHRIST!!  No cardiac ward for me, unless the snowblower quits (again) and I blow a gasket!

So long as the power stays on, I'll game or watch TV.

No snow here yet, the sun is shining.  But we usually get what mirth gets, only 8-12 hours later.

There's already been a 19-vehicle crash on I-295 just north of Portland. No serious injuries reported, thankfully. I don't envy the people who went into work this morning and are now going to fight their way back home. I was out briefly this morning and the roads were awful.

I work a lot of weird hours on weekends (IT) and being able to do it from home is great. I work one or two days from home during the normal biz week. I always work from home on snow days. Why risk my car and self on bad roads if I don't have to?

I hope all you folks in the NE get through this OK. We've had our share of storms in the Great Plains but we dodged a bullet on this one.

I just got home from a half day at work. The snow was already coming down by 7am. Now it's a thick and lovely Mud SlushPuppy outside. I'm glad to be watching it from my own windows and not from my office. I really, really hope my POS snowblower has at least one or two rounds of clearing left in it for tomorrow...

I'll have to say an incantation to whatever Nordic deity that the power company calls on for help, just in case.

I drove in all kinds of crazy weather when I was younger, but I avoid it now. Too much risk, too much stress.

This.

The commissar of the people's democratic republic of Massachusetts issued a statement today that those who ride on highways or state roads after 16:00 will be subject to either a fine or arrest or both.

Even though I'm not prone to go driving in this weather anymore I still feel kind of bullied by my government at this statement.

Anyway...so far so good here.  There is only about 3 or 4 inches of snow here but it's kind of wet snow.  Supposedly we're going to get dumped on massively overnight.  I'll wait to see what we got in the morning I guess.  I pray we do not lose power.

I got to work at home today however my poor wife had to go into the office and on her way home got into an accident.  I had to go to the police station to pick her up as her car was not driveable and had to be towed away.  She's fine and so is the other guy but she's kind of depressed about what happened.

Power is out at the Staggerwing Longhouse  :(

I'll probably chill (humor! Ar-Ar!) for now since my iPad is down to 80% and it's all I have for now. I truly hope its back soon. Be safe all!

(BTW, if any of you are shopping for tablets, do not skimp on the 4G option. One power outage is all you need to realize it was worth it. The personal hotspot feature alone is too cool for school.)

That sucks Stagger, I hope you have a non-electric source of heat or at least a generator if it gets to bad.  I hope they had extra electrical crews staged and ready to tackle these outages like they do around here.

+1 stay save Grogs

its reported that my granddad said from his observations that heavy snow on the eastcoast (news made it in the local newspapers here, there where no TV at that time) lead to a 'snow event' here in Germany about 4 weeks later... so we may get snow again  in mid-March and the winter is not over here yet...

Sorry to hear about your wife's accident, W8t. Glad she's ok.

We have somewhere between 24-30 inches of snow in Portland. It's hard to know the exact amount with all the blowing and drifting. The wind is very strong with gusts of 55mph. Fortunately the power is on and there have been few outages overall in the state. The snow is dry and light so there hasn't been much trouble with downed trees and power lines.

This storm has certainly lived up to the hype.

We didn't get nearly as much as they said we would in my area (not that I'm complaining) with the wind blow and drifting the snow it is hard to tell exactly but we got some where in the 7-9 inch range.

Hope the rest of you guys stay safe and report in when you can.

I think it is still snowing in parts of New England so they aren't out of the woods yet.  The rest of us still have the high winds to worry about as well.

I just want to list all the grogs who were affected so we make sure we get an update from them all when they are able.

Hey guys! Power came back on around 10 and went out again an hour later. Still not back and CL&P wont give any estimates. they keep saying 'Call back in two hours' That's three x 2 hours now. I have about 24-30 inches min. Took about 45 minutes just to shovel as far as the car, which is a giant white lump with a bit of one fender showing. I have to take a breather because exertion in cold air is not my particular forte. If I can shovel the car out maybe I can jump start my blower. No luck with the generator though.

Luckily I had plugged in the iDevices last night so they got a brief charge. I'll check back in later.

Fortunately we did not lose power although 400k + lost power in the Cape and Island regions.  I have not been outside yet to assess the snowfall but they say our area got 28".  The travel ban is still in effect.  Anyone caught driving on any road will be subject up to 1 year in jail and a $500 fine.

We got about 2 feet. Power never went out. Went sledding down my driveway with the kids, then shoveled it out, then went to the in laws to shovel them out, then went for a run. Now watching my kids again while The Wife is at the gym and getting food for dinner. If I can stay awake I will try to finish Dishonored later.

W8 sorry about your wife's car. Where in God's name do you live?

Funny you should mention hauling kegs of beer in a Brat... Perhaps already tapped and with two beer-wenches riding in the back?

I'll have to confess here that I spent significant of my twenties prototyping Star's lifestyle, only designed for rural New England. There was much beer, road trips, MILFy and DILFy off-duty nurses, rock clubs, and various combinations of some or all of the aforementioned. It all came to a screeching halt when my first was born. Except for the beer  :)

It all seems like a past-life memory manifestation to me now.  :-\

Well it is not the most quiet thing in the world and he did put in a turbo charged diesel instead of the original gas engine, so there's that :)

LMAO! That reminds me of when we lived in Anchorage. In the winter, we would sometimes store freezer goods on the back porch, frozen veggies and things that wouldn't attract wildlife. Nice :)

Thy're just getting around to plowing my neighborhood. I live one house down from the corner and a huge DPW just got stuck plowing right in front of my yard. This is an enormous vehicle, the kind that the DOT uses to clear the highways. He's out there now rocking back and forth, tires spinning. It is just whacked what a mess this snow has made of things here.

This is the worst.  Especially now that there has been a little melting and refreezing.  You may want to look into something explosive to deal with this.  Bangalore torpedoes come to mind.   ;D

'Wing maybe I can get my dog to pull a tabogen up to you for rescue. He'll arrive with rum under his chin, of course.

We're supposed to get ice tonight that will turn to rain tomorrow. Long term forecast is for another storm next weekend. That will be much more dangerous as my mother will be visiting for the weekend.

I don't want to think about it.

Thanks for the offer, Gus. My kids and I are set up pretty good as far as heat and vittles. Beer OTOH...  :(
On second though that little keg of rum might come in handy.

News here indicates you guys need to get that snow off your roofs ASAP. When the rain comes, the snow will absorb it and they're worried roofs will fail under the weight.

Too dangerous now. It's dark out and my roof is snow covered. Plus my roof is about 75 feet off the ground at it's high point. I will be seriously injured if not killed out right if I go up there now.

75' is kinda long even for a roof rake. Some have optional extensions but I'm not sure how many you can add before it bends under it's own weight.

Winter aint over yet because I haven't been sick for 90 days in a row. One of my daughters will fix that I'm sure. Well I, for one, am disappointed.

All we got here was a measly 9 or so inches, with maybe another inch or two of mixed sleet & freezing rain.  While that was enough to force me to sleep at my hotel on Sunday (especially since I had to work again that next night), I was still able to go back home on Monday.  By Minnesota standards, that's pretty "meh".

Now a *real* blizzard would've forced me to stay at my hotel for three days minimum.  What a letdown!
