Let me guess...it will be designed for the console ported to the PC.  Man, what I need is a new, shiny isometric party based/turn based RPG made for the PC. Let the console crowd play DA2

You got it all wrong.
It will be a next-gen console first person shooter with Bullet Time powers and Quick Time Events. :P

I few more tidbits of information to add to the speculation.

For I don't know how long, maybe 1-2 years, I've been considering a re-play of Baldur's Gate II on an off. I'm no fan of the real-time combat, tick-based or not, but the game was good enough for me to live with that and enjoy it in spades.

Pushing me toward re-play were:

# A relative dearth of RPGs with parties. Actually that ain't true. There is Neverwinter Nights 2, Drakensang, Dragon Age 1-2 and probably more. The combat in these kills the enjoyment dead though. I don't mind micro-managing, in fact I enjoy it, so long as I can do it at my own pace and see the results occur one at a time. I'm a fan of Temple of Elemental Evil, Knights of the Chalice and the ilk for combat
# The fact I'd never played the Throne of Baal expansion. I did buy it, but had a corrupted CD
# Nostalgia  :)

Deterring me has been:

# Inertia. I know that there are a whole bunch of great mods that would enhance the game. I also know that I'd probably need to spend an entire weekend working out what I would like and acquiring them and installing them and trouble-shooting to get them to work. I doubt I'd be satisfied that I was getting a sufficiently optimal experience without doing this, but the up-front work puts me off as I'm short on gaming time
# The initial dungeon. Whilst I've only completed BG II once, I've played through the initial dungeon at least a half dozen times, and never want to again. I'm sure there is a mod that lets me skip it, and for that, refer to the previous point
# That I'm familiar with the story, and like new things, and there are other good games around and I don't have that much gaming time

This re-release relieves my torment. I'll simply not think about it any more this happens. Bravo!  ;D

It's BG1 that's finished now, though apparently they are also hard at work on BG2

Not that I'm complaining. But how is this even legal?

(And will Steam get it?  ;D)

I doubt it, or at least, not to begin with.  Beamdog - a direct competitor to Steam - are somehow behind all of this.  I can therefore see it being exclusive to Beamdog, at least initially.  Probably depends on sales.

Beamdog has a lot of former game devs on staff. They ended up with the rights to do an HD remake, and they're going to use said HD remake to (at least initially) drive buyers to their own client, which they've been trying to build up for awhile. I'd imagine it was a sort of deal where they took less money up front for a period of exclusivity.

Two things: first, do I need the original Baldurs gate for this? Doesn't seem so. Second, why isn't there more excitement about this??? It's baldurs gate made new!

Not enough advertising, and no hype-campaign.

Also, I want BG3!!! :P

No, you don't need to have any prior versions.    And there is a LOT of excitement / anticipation from the iPad crowd for this   ;-)

Currently they're late on the release, and the official forum is so flooded you can't even access it.

It says on the site it's released now at 20 clams, no client installed required.

I'm tempted...like to hear some impressions first.  I never did get around to more than dabbling with the original BG.

I've been playing it a bit and frankly, the old problem I had with the BG series of games comes up again.
That major beef I have with the game.
The limited party of 6.

I keep running into more and more interesting characters I want to have tagging along and yet I can't.
The fact they've added 2 more interesting ones (Neera, a female half-elf  Wild Mage, and Dorn-il-Khan, a male half-orc Blackguard) only makes it far worse.

I've just run into Minsc (and Boo of course), and I want him in my party. But I already have my 5 (Imoen, Jaheira, Khalid, Neera, Garrick).
I'm considering to dump Jaheira&Khalid when done with them a bit and replacing them with Minsc&Boo and his elven lady-friend.

Ohh well, at least ditching Xvar and his annoying psychopathic halfing fighter friend was an easy choice (I'm Lawful Good, can't have Chaotic Evil tagging along).
