Title: Freespace 2 open advice?
Post by: mikeck on February 15, 2013, 10:16:01 PM
I am interested in picking up Freespace 2 from GoG. I want to modernize it and from what I understand the freespace open mod is the one to use. Apparently it was a pain in the arse to install but now there is an installer available I believe?

Anyway, have you guys done this? Is it easy? Will it work with 64 bit win 7?
Finally, is it worth it? Evochron is nice but a little boring

I have done it but a long time ago...probably almost ten years. I do remember the process being straightforward with minimal headaches. Can't remember much detail though. But yes it was worth it...the game is just fantastically immersive and still pretty to look at.

Thanks Gus. I thought FS2 open came out more recently than that but not sure. It's only $10 from GoG so it's worth a shot

Edit: nope, came out in 2002...good call Gus

You might try poking around here...

I worked on the Wing Commander Saga project and it was based on the FS2 engine. I did not do any coding but the Hard Light sight was frequently referenced.

^You worked on that eh? Righteous. I have that loaded on my desktop right now staring back at me too. What kind of work did you do for it?

I helped with the scripts, keeping the non-native-English-speakers honest. :)

I voiced Captain Moran and Hitchey (one of the fighter pilots.)

I hope you enjoy it. It was quite the labor of love....

^That's very cool. Didn't have any idea you were involved.

...what else don't we know about you? Besides that you're not really a doctor, I mean.

I thought I saw Race Bannon once around about 1975.

Not too likely.

Those whose who've caught sight of Race Bannon did so only because it's the last thing they ever saw.

Thanks for your help guys. It wasnt too bad...just had to follow directions. What is great is that after installing "open" I found the Diaspora mod (which is a Battlestar Galactica mod). Man, how cool is that mod ??? Flying vipers and taking out cylons with rail guns and such. Graphics are awesome and their are a ton of user made missions once the stock ones are done. Best part is that Diaspora comes with an installer....just click on the exe and it takes care of the rest.

There are a ton of mods for it too.
