Steam currently has both on sale for cheap and I'm in the mood for some horror gaming.
Who likes what and why?
Amnesia, it is scarier than Penumbra and looks more gooder. Plus the puzzles are challenging but not ridiculously so.
Well if it looks more gooder who can argue with that? Sold!
Wow he really twisted your arm, huh? :D
The biggest difference is that Penumbra has combat, Amnesia does not. But yeah, I'd have voted for Amnesia too. I hope you manage more of it than I did - turns out I am a big girly man. :(
Combat, eh? Well crap. I just blew $5 on Amnesia based on Gus' gooder analysis.
I actually liked that Amnesia had no combat. Amnesia is special...really scary because it gets in your head and messes with it. Big time.
I've been advised to shut off the lights and put on head phones.
^Definitely. Wait until dark if that is an option. And don't be a puss.
I promise not to squeal like a little girl or soil my knickers.
Don't promise that yet. You may be surprised at what starts to become frightening.
Yeah Gus is right, the lack of combat is a big plus. Besides, the combat in Penumbra sucked.
Amnesia is almost based on the fact that the player can't fight back, and is basically worthless except for his brain.
And the combat in Penumbra was pretty sucky.
Well it should be interesting to play a game where you cannot fight back against the antagonists.
Curious to see what you think of it.
mwa ha ha
Well I'm going to download it this afternoon in preparation for when the sun goes down. I also need to find my ear phones...
Get a box of Depends.
I found it to be about as scary as an episode of Three's Company. You can basically just walk through 90% of it because there's no meaningful penalty for dying.
And along comes ol' robot to piss on my dreams!
That's what the Depends are for.
I found if I suspended my disbelief and had minimal distractions, the game was indeed scary.
Well I'm just looking for a few neck hair raisers during the game play.
It's how I roll.
Here's a nice bonus article about how everything sucks and we're all going to die. Enjoy!

BTW I found some episodes of Three's Company to be terrifying.
Well Mr. Ferley was an allegory for the Anti-Christ.
Haha!
I promise to play some more L4D2 with you and Gus and allow Gus take target practice on your back.
I am up for that. But it was CommandTent who was the master of killing friends.
That is true. TCT like to cap folks in the back.

The Thief series gave a good feel for that, too.
I can remember being in the city of the dead in the first one being chased by hordes of undead. It sucked.
I always thought he did it on purpose and then made up some excuse like "Oh my controller fell in my peanut butter" or something or other.
In Thief you can fight back, you just have to be stealthy about it. In Amnesia there's nothing you can do.
I never played Thief. I heard it doesn't play nice with Win7.
Which one? I think they are all available and playable on Win7 now from GoG. And they still rock.

Except with undead. Who can see you hiding in the dark. And chase you with growing hordes. It was horrible.
Still, I'd like to go back and try that again. Could be fun.
There are undead in Thief? Huh.
^One fire arrow in that scenario and you'll be living the high life again.

Crap. Now you're tempting even me.
$10 at GoG. I may take the plunge.
Besides fire arrows (if they are in the first game, I forget)...there are traps and forms of skullduggery in Thief.
But to be honest I would go with Thief: Deadly Shadows (the last one in the series released). IMHO it's the best one.
Be warned I have had very recent troubles with my old saves and being unable to save new progress in W7 with Deadly Shadows.

Well aren't you a big brave man.
Taking it personally, are you?
Look, the thing with Amnesia is that about 3/4th of the monsters will simply disappear if you let them catch you. You get re-spawned about 1 minute back in the game and can then proceed unimpeded by the ghoulies. Kinda removed any of the tension for me.
I think it was sarcasm.
The work on that sarcasm font can't finish soon enough.

No, I just thought it wasn't particularly classy of you to stumble in and take a nice big shit on a thread in which Bison bought a new game and was getting psyched to play it.
I'm still psyched to play it. Gus said it was gooder, so it must be awesomer!
Well, hopefully you can resist the temptation to play as I did and just run through it and instead play it in the manner the devs intended. (it was pretty spooky until I discovered the exploit).
It's all good. I figured I'd die about 300 to 400 times before understanding the game mechanics.
I played it very slowly and deliberately. It was more gooder that way.
I enjoyed what I played of it, but the camera thingy it does when you get freaked out makes me want to BARF.
There is quite a large mod community for Amnesia also, if you tire of the core game. There's one set in an abandoned asylum that looked really interesting. I'll see if I can find it again. I think I originally saw it on Kokatu a year or two ago.
I learn new things around here every day.

Why are there ads popping up in the forum text? The word tire is an ad. Annoying. I've also noticed it on a good dozen other forum posts.
I'm chasing you from forum to forum, it seems.
I hope you're not catching... ???
Hmm...seems like the issue has been resolved.
Ok, there are more mods than you can shake a stick at here, so it might be hard to find a decent one.
http://www.moddb.com/games/amnesia-the-dark-descent/mods
And the one I was talking about is called, White Night, which I never played but I would like to. Maybe I'll download it today.
http://www.moddb.com/mods/white-night
White Night user review (a 9):
"Inspired heavily by the shady atmospheres of psychological juggernauts of various pedigree, but perhaps no more so than by Session 9 or Jacob's Ladder/Silent Hill, is an Amnesia total conversion mod titled White Night of which I had the pleasure of playing for the better part of the last two evenings for a total of about 3.5-4 hours of game play.
White Night has a palpable atmosphere that makes you realize fully the depths of the human mind, and of the shadows hanging over us in our subconscious. Tanshaydar has tapped into the same fountain of knowledge that writers such as Mark Z. Danielewski or contemporary mod creator Rumpel, of Afraid of Monsters and Cry of Fear fame.
Surrounded by asylum bars, rusted iron, gritty vents and vaulted, groined archways of pseudo modern architecture you will trudge through a thoughtful array of puzzles. Some of them, I admit, are actually kind of irritating. (Navigating a room of obstacles, tubs, half walls and uneven terrain to spin *really* tiny knobs on *really* thin piping was kind of annoying.) Nonetheless, all of this has been expertly realized and lovingly built among the hardships of simply one modder, Tanshaydar, whose accomplishments here are polarizing given the short development cycle (Only 10 months).
This is the best mod for Amnesia out there right now, and it is my contender for the best story of the year in Moddb's upcoming contests. Well done to everyone involved, bumps and all, this is one hell of an experience.
If I had to update my review without changing the score, I will say that the recently circulated notion that White Night is almost uncannily like Korsokovia is correct, and worth noting. Many people find it impeccable in similarity, almost as a remake or re imagining. I am neutral on the subject, but having played both, it is a substantial similarity. "

Nothing we did here.
Toonces period up there looks marvy.
I was trying to embed a video, but not a Youtube video.
Between not being able to embed videos, and not enough smileys, I'm about to head back to some other wargaming website. >:(

I'll see you a dawn with Nerf swords, sir!
Installing on my macbook now...preparing myself to be scared!
Toonces'll be back in five minutes when he realizes his loyal and adoring audience is here.
Group hug for Toonces!
xoxo

OK, started working on new smilies. It's not quite as easy as it seems, though it may not be too difficult. There are some new choices I've made available, but I'm still working on uploading my own personal collection.

HAHA! TCT is big brother!
And laid low by the flu. Smacked in the back of the head by it, no doubt.

The first cases of people turning into zombies were people who "thought" they had a flu like virus. Proven fact from all the zombie history books I've read. Ergo. Tent is on his way to turning into a zombie.

Sweet, I've always wanted to do something with my life. I just didn't figure it would be starting the zombie apocalypse.
Well revile in it while you can, you soon will not remember anything. You'll just be a giant pus bag looking for some brains.
On the plus side, you get to wear sweatpants everywhere.
never playe either but looking at stuff online it looks like Amnesia looks cooler to me, ymmv
Oh man, Amnesia is SPOOKY! I'll admit it, I got some goose bumps. :-\
Hells yeah.
