So, foolish me, I bought a wireless Xbox game controller for my pc, thinking it would come in handy. Specifically I bought it to play TES Oblivion -- I played on the console years ago, recently bought it off Steam for my pc and thought ,"This would be easier to play with a game controller." Only then, after having bought said game controller, did I find out that the PC Oblivion port has no gamepad support. Many wasted hours of google searches later and numerous attempts to get the controller to work with things like "xpadder" etc., I came to the sensible conclusion: "This is idiotic. Just play the game with a mouse and keyboard."
This tragic story of heartbreak and wisdom painfully won aside -- I now have an Xbox controller that is of no obvious use to me. The question before me: do I try to return it, or - hold on! - might it come in handy with other games?
My question to you: do you use a gamepad? do you think it's awesome or just a convenience you could more or less do without? what games do you use it for?
I don't play FPS's in general, so that probably reduces the usefulness of owning a gamepad by about 90%. What about other RPG's like Witcher and Dragon Age? Or flying games like Rise of Flight? I assume you must need some hardcore equipment for sims like A-10 Warthog -- but can you get a way with a gamepad for less hard-core flight games?
I hate them. I find them uncomfortable to hold and clumsy and unwieldy to use compared to the mouse/keyboard combo. And a console controller for a flight sim? That's a paddlin'.

I use a Xbox-clone gamepad for only a few games.
Trackmania and Final Fantasy 7 and 14.
Otherwise I am usually more happy with a keyboard + mouse setup.
I've got one. I became so accustomed to playing third person games with a controller than I'm incapable of doing so with mouse and keyboard. So anything like Assassin's Creed or Brutal Legend gets played with the controller. Platformers, too.

Yeah I keep a 360 controller handy for third-person games or a side scroller or adventure game for my PC. Very rarely will I try it for racing or flight sims, if only to do a quick test of something since I don't want to bring out my racing or flight sim gear every time.
Although for some reason, I prefer the Kb+M for Hitman games.
I use the xbox 360 controller....find it much easier to control in FPS games.

This. I play Darksiders 2 with a wired X-Box 360 controller and it works great. I also intend to play Tomb Raider with it. But I disabled it for Far Cry 3 - IMHO, you need a mouse to have precise aim in a FPS.
Use the Xbox 360 controller for Warhammer 40k melee combat & combos. If long distance run and gun is required switch back to mouse and keyboard.

sounds like there's consensus around using the gamepad for FPS and third person action games then. I'm not a big consumer of either unfortunately -- hmmm...
Does Skyrim at least have true gamepad support (not this arcane third-party software work-around bs you have to go through with Oblivion) -- ? I'm still truly shocked that Oblivion pc doesn't support it -- I know it's a console port and all, but jeez.
Any proponents of the gaming mouse out there? Maybe that's the direction I should go -- although the price of some of these things gives me pause --
I don't use a controller for the PC, I can never effectively wield them and find I have much better control using the keyboard and mouse.
I can't use a controller very well for First Person either. I'm in the opposite boat as Grim is. I have Oblivion for the PC and played it for a while but stopped when I got my PS3. I then bought a used copy of Oblivion for PS3 and loaded it up so I could play on my Flatscreen. Now I have a hard time even killing the big rats in the basement. My POV flies all over the place while I try to use the sword. I played for a while and then gave up. It's like trying to learn stick shift after having driven automatic for 30 years.

The funny thing until the last few months, I was also an exclusive keyboard player. But after really sticking to the controller, it became much easier to use. Where I struggle on a keyboard is the movement of the character, just not coordinated enough to make them move, jump, crawl, etc. using the keys. Using a controller is much easier in this area. However, I do agree for actual targeting and shooting, the mouse is much more precise. But I have gotten better in my aiming with the controller and I believe the ability to move using the controller far outweighs the keyboard for me right now.
