Title: 7.62 High Calibre
Post by: eyebiter on March 01, 2013, 07:57:39 PM
Noticed we didn't have a thread for this Russian tactical game.

Camera controls can be frustrating at times.  But overall once you get past the rough spots this is a decent game.  Excellent selection of weapons, on par with Jagged Alliance 1.13.

One more thing - once you install, go in and manually set the read only attribute for the \BMP folder and all contents.  This prevents graphic problems down the road.

There is also an unofficial patch on the 1C forum.  Haven't tried it yet, not certain what it fixes or changes.

I thought it was a very fun tactical simulator.  The beginning where you had only pistols, shotguns, SMGs, and bolt action rifles was the best part of the game.  I felt it fell apart in the later stages once both you and the enemies had access to GPMGs, sniper rifles, and modern assault rifles.  Just getting to cover from the start point on each map was ridiculous.  Half my guys would get dropped in the first two seconds and my Humvee would get totalled every time.

You'll definitely want to use the Unofficial Patch that Eyebiter linked.  There were a lot of little bugs, some confusing text, etc that it fixes.

I'd also recommend using the Blue Sun Mod for extra content.

The game is certainly very deadly.  I never got as far as SDR and was still getting killed regularly after a short stretch into the game.

I wonder why they make games frustratingly deadly like that?  I'm sure they appeal to a small cadre of hardcore gamers but I would think it would turn off a lot of potential purchasers.  But them, maybe it's just me...I suck at this type of game.

I do enjoy a challenge, so long as it doesn't feel like the odds are constantly stacked against me.  It's not usually so difficult that you're constantly dying, but it can be easy enough to do so you gotta be wary of risky decisions.

In the later stages of the game, the odds are stacked against whichever side is the attacker on the map.  The spawn zones are too small so all the defender needs to do is get an MG or two and perhaps a grenade launcher and just keep spraying the spawn zones.  90% of the attackers won't even get out of the little yellow ring.

I seem to remember that Jarhead really enjoyed this game.
