Title: ArmA III Alpha videos
Post by: Silent Disapproval Robot on March 04, 2013, 11:20:24 PM
Looking pretty good!  I'm going to pre-order and get in on the alpha when it's released tomorrow.

Please let us know what you think once you get some time in game.  I am looking forward to the possibilities in ARMA III.

Damn, thats one beautiful looking game. ArmA 3 wasn't really on my radar because of how clunky the controls in ArmA 2. After watching the videos I think I might pre-order as well.

Arma 2 controls aren't clunky. Smooth as butter compared to Arma 1. Glad we get smoother movement in part 3

Hope they improve the ambient combat and sec ops module with more options.

considering that i will get ('collect' ;)) this title sooner or later anyway ...so why not now were it is cheaper
...and watch it grow... maybe even report some bugs in :)

with Steam, updates and mod install should be hassle-free too.

Of course it will only come out a year after release.  Since it is in development,  3 will not be released for a while.   Depends if you can wait that long.

...it will take 'rest of year' until full game, then several month for first Addons and then some time for a cheaper bundle, maybe at one of those famous Steam holiday / or Xmas 2014 sales...

the sandbox / editor (where most of the solo-play fun with the Arma series is located, IMHO) is included.

Downloading right now  ;D

...and will get the full game maybe short before Xmas 2013 and saved 20€ on it.

I am slightly dubious about buying into an Alpha

I bought into the BETA of rFactor2 - more than a year ago I think - and that game is still way off being ready from last I looked.

I was fully aware it was in BETA (obviously) and was more than willing to stump up the cash to help and to get early access - but I honestly didn't know it was going to take this long.

Alpha seems a very long time away given my experience with rFactor2.

I'm waiting since the change in Arma number is an indicator that I should get a new PC.

This does look pretty freakin' amazing.  And I thought Arma II looked great.  wow.

Has the single-player experience ever been worth it with Arma?  I've never played because I never really been bitten by the MP bug for any game.  (I also don't love FPS but I know Arma is not your cookie-cutter fps by any means.)

anyway, i'm seriously intrigued by this if it seems like there will be any fun to be had in single player.  Also, what undercovergeek said -- this would definitely mean upgrading the ol' system...

I've played single-player and multiplayer ARMA since its first incarnation as Operation Flashpoint.  I got in about a year late in 2002.

There have been times that the multiplayer was pretty good, but these days I avoid multiplayer of almost any kind.

I never liked the campaigns in any of the ARMA games  BUT

there is a great editor where you can set up all kinds of situations in the game world.  And the editor has been steadily improving for the last
10 years.

So for me (and as others have mentioned, others as well), the best part of the ARMA experience is fiddling with the editor, bye which I mean
picking a topic of interest (eg jet Air Strikes).  Setting one up and trying it from both sides.  One fun thing is that if you get killed you can switch sides.

I remember one air strike where I ejected.  Landed behind a burning gas station, found an enemy tank (I think it was the one I had tried to bomb), went sneaking back to friendly lines, got an antitank missile launcher out of an ammo box, went back and blew up the tank.

As a jet pilot, i had no way to command any troops, but if I'd gotten killed I could have taken command of either side and told the AI to blast the tank or taken command of the tank.  I think that was a late ARMA One battle.

Arma2 had lots of good islands and terrains -- though none quite as marvelously constructed as some of the late ARMA One islands with multiple-arched roadways snaking around some nicely constructed urban hills.  ARMA2 was pretty grim in a good way.

WOW!

Just loaded up the editor to have a wee fling. It looks and sounds STUNNING.

What?...WHAT? I couldn't resist it? Who here honestly thought I wouldn't be able to buy the damn Alpha version?  ;)

Is it easier and less cumbersome than the previous versions?

Thanks MengJiao.  That's good to hear.  Now to solve the harder question of having a computer that could run this...

JudgeDredd or anyone else who's playing -- in addition to overall gameplay, I'd be interested to hear how taxing this thing is for the system you're playing it on --

ok - new graphics card needed.

Don't get me wrong, I was impressed with how it looked when I first loaded a game...and it was on STANDARD. Wacked it up to Ultra, then down to Very High, then High then back to Standard.

To me standard looked great. But my card (GTX460 768MB) doesn't cut it for anything higher.

I'm due an upgrade next year anyway...for the time being, I'll enjoy it on standard.

Of course I caved:)  Played only the first infantry mission and things looked pretty good.  I am not an arma expert so I likely don't notice all the little issues.  Played really smoothe and seemed like a good time.  Will have to try the other missions now....

Because the steam haters would all die terrible deaths if they found out that steam actually made people's lives easier.

Yes. I noticed DayZ mod is on Steam now. I usually get version synchronization problem before but this will solve that for a lot of people. But I still use Arma 2 outside steam so I need to do the occasional version updating myself via the DayZ Commander tool.

Well since this is Alpha, content is limited even if you do some mission editing yourself. You will still end up playing other stuff.

Happy to see I'm just as bad at ArmA 3 as I was at 2. Infantry mission KIA, Scuba Mission KIA.

Game plays smooth on my machine, with a split between high/very high settings.

..already had some unexpected fun with the editor.  :)
i placed a GMG armored Jeep, drove to the next village and tried to see how the decals of a building work, the stages of turning into ruins,  and if those ruins are tactical usefull ... so i shelled a house and later get out on foot to explore different stances in the ruin... suddenly i saw a rabbit, i followed it, cause i want to hunt it with the sidearm of course... it run into a garage, i follwed and when i got a sightpicture of it, it opened  :o the garage backdoor and went through it ... i circumvent the garage and dropped it. ;D

The new quick throw key has given me some unintentionally spectacular deaths.  I think I need to remap it as it's in the same binding that I used to cycle my weapons options in ArmA II.  I instinctively press it to switch from semi-auto to burst and the next thing I know, I've deposited a grenade in my lap.

I made a quick mission with the AH-9 and had some fun flying around in that.  I'm still fiddling with the graphics settings.  It mostly runs very smoothly with everything at very high or ultra but the heli missions give me some lag.  I might have to scale back the draw distance.  Pity.

And you're playing with an HD 7970, yes?  So that definitely gives an indication of how gpu intensive this game is -- not surprising of course, it looks very nearly photo-realistic amazing.

Mind if I ask what resolution you're playing at?

Damn.  I'm saving my pennies for Gears of War Judgement and Bioshock Infinite coming out later this month but boy, I wish I knew that there was going to be an option to buy Arma III beta with a guarantee of the full game upon release.  That is a deal almost too good to pass up on.

Ok, do I skip lunch for a week and buy now or wait for full version to come out and buy later?

I'm also still trying to tweak the graphics settings to maximize viewing pleasure with FPS.  My gfx card is admittedly light and even though the computer is less than 6 months old this game is making me think about upgrading (I knew I would have to do it eventually anyway).  As is, I run texture, objects, and terrain settings on ultra high pretty smoothly, but only if I reduce resolution to 1280x1024.  If I kick resolution up to 1920x1200, I need to reduce the settings to a mix of standard and high.  This is a game that I really want to max out on graphics because they really did a spectacular job.

I'm also still tweaking controls.  Once I get everything comfortably mapped, this game is going to really shine.  Its already superb and knowing it is only at alpha phase makes me almost teary eyed due to the potential.

I'm running at 1920x1080 right now with most things at very high or ultra except post processing which I've set to normal  (makes things too blurry at higher settings, I find).  I might drop it to 1650x1050 and crank everything up.  I'm still experimenting with the FXAA and SMAA to see which I prefer.

I played a couple of multiplayer missions with the SimHQ guys tonight.  It was pretty interesting.  The enemy AI seems a lot more capable.  Framerates were generally good at the start of each mission but as stuff got blown up and bodies began piling up, the rates got worse for everyone across the board.  I think the worst was when I did a rocket run on an enemy held town.  I fired 24 rockets from my AH-9 helo and the frames went from 36 fps to 6fps until the smoke and flames died away.

I guess I like the odd-numbered ARMAs better:  Opflash (number = 0) not so much -- some classic multiplayer though
ARMA (one) (number = 1) -- played it a lot
ARMA2 (number = 2) -- Had fun in Multiplayer, but not so much in the editor
                                                                              ARMA3 (number = 3) -- Fun in the editor.

There was one moment last night when I was using civilians as assassins.  I got a Bluefor guy onto the road to get the action rolling.  He was looking for his ATV.  From the ATV-hunter's point of view, I looked down the road and saw a civilian in a blue truck.  He started up and drove right at me.  I thought "Is he just going to run me over?  Is this one time the crazy AI accidently does the exact right thing?"  Sure enough, the truck went right over me as I watched in 3rd person.  Luckily I was in novice/recruit mode and being run over foot to head by the front and back wheel was not fatal.  they patched me up and I went off and killed one OPFOR sentry.

I agree, though it wasn't until I started recalling what fights seemed the most interesting that I found that they had all been in ARMA 1.

On the other hand, ARMA 2 was fun in multiplayer.  For me, ARMA3 has an ARMA1 feel.  Maybe its the huge radar domes and the extravagant landscape of Stratis.

I still play ARMA I, however do not play ARMA II anymore (never was a DayZ person).  I agree that ARMA I had really good fights and I still have not played all the created missions, and there are a lot of good ones in there.  I felt the editor in I was easy to use and fun as well.  And add to the fact that I can crank up ARMA I with no problems and ARMA II I have to run on a lower setting....  ARMA I can be epic when you create gigantic forces smashing into one another.

And add this as a + as well :-P

I haven't played ARMA 1 in years, but in my mind's eye, I recall it as visually perfect.  I'm sure I'd be a bit shocked if I went and looked at it again.

Another problem is that I may be confusing the very late original Opflash mods with very early arma 1 things.  I'm not quite sure what mod I was in when I tossed a gamon bomb at a STGIII and the resulting explosion hurled the STGIII several hundred meters into the air and far far out to sea.  Ah, those were the days.  But when were they?  And what mod was that and in what game?

Well, I'm speaking from history so you know that could change once I fire it up again..... recently I have wanted more gameplay out of what I play then anything else.  I have chunked many a fps, so much so that I have really stopped playing them all together.
