"Added a separate button for reverse move."

That was a sorely needed addition.

The additional DLC's will be updated soon according to the developer to take into account the numerous changes with the new patch.

I'm very glad I bought this game when it was on sale. Well worth the price!

After downloading all three patches, should they be installed in a specific order?

I have the Matrix version and the updates don't like it,

Hmmm..the patches would work, Jim.

It looks like 'budd' on the Matrix forum got the patches installed:
http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=3285309 (http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=3285309)

The order I do them is:

1) Core update which is an executable.
2) The March 2013 patch which is an extension file which you have to install through the Game Updater.
3) The optional polygon patch which is also an extension file like #2.

Wow.  Lots of stuff in here I'm interested in, not the least of which is the new C&C stuff.  Looks like a fair bit of eye-candy, as well.

Between this and a renewed interest in Scourge of War, I may be moving away from chit-shuffling and back into 3-D battle spaces for a bit.

This is probably the only game I have that a spiffy new patch with great new features results in the following response

***** **** ***** another patch I have to ****ing try and apply using the ****ing awful patching system, the current build seems OK to me maybe I'll save myself the grief and just stick with it.

Two questions

1) has the patching system been made better

2) if not is the new patch worth going through the grief

I'm hearing that.  Maybe a better man could walk us dummies through the procedure. I get the exe but not how to handle the other files.

Here is what I did to update APOS:

1) Download the following three files from http://www.graviteam.ua/help/download-patches.html (http://www.graviteam.ua/help/download-patches.html)

CORE update:      gtos_cu_581_eng.exe
March 2013 patch:    apos_upd_tar_rak_mar13_eng.gt2extension
Polygon update:    k43t_apos_patch_march13_eng.gt2extension      This is optional, but I recommend it!

2) Run the Core update executable and point it to your APOS home folder.
3) After the Core update is done, start APOS and on the main screen, you should see the following at the top right corner:
              Version 5.81 (2101)  Update: mar 13
4) Close APOS.
5) Start the Game Updater which should be found in the APOS start folder. You'll see something like the following screen, but with less entries and no mods:
(https://www.grogheads.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg534.imageshack.us%2Fimg534%2F1882%2F39862213.jpg&hash=614344b453153813a0e918c270b053dddfebfc70)
6) Click Install and find the location where you saved the March 2013 patch. Make sure your file type is set to the .gt2extension and then click Open:
(https://www.grogheads.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg23.imageshack.us%2Fimg23%2F4577%2F42513021.jpg&hash=0893593ebc6e4a7d66d5b44aeb5d311b64a2f1d4)
7) You should see a clock graphic and a counter telling you that the patch is installing. Once done, you should see your Game Update entry set to 4.02:
(https://www.grogheads.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg805.imageshack.us%2Fimg805%2F2595%2F35317951.jpg%2F&hash=45d47ad4a716a025a74bbc438d03e5882640f793)
8) Now click Install again to install the polygon update. Navigate to where you stored it and once again, Open the k43t_apos_patch_march13_eng.gt2extension file as you did with the March 2013 patch in step 6. You should another clock and counter which tells you the polygon update is installing. This took about 5-7 minutes on my PC to install.
(https://www.grogheads.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg32.imageshack.us%2Fimg32%2F4020%2F40923868.jpg&hash=060304baf9c2d300e0ed117949407b317945128d)
9) Make sure to click Save and Play! APOS will start. Exit and run Game Updater again.
9) You're finished and should see about same entries as I do in Game Updater:
      A) Game Update: 4.02
      B) District update: 1.03
The three Addon entries you see are the official DLC's and the top two are mods (one is a sound mod and the other is a blood mod, of course).
(https://www.grogheads.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg534.imageshack.us%2Fimg534%2F1882%2F39862213.jpg&hash=614344b453153813a0e918c270b053dddfebfc70)

Dane49 gives a nice written explanation on how to do last year's update. It's quite similar to what I wrote so you can also refer to it.

Good man, WallysWorld.

No question that this continues to be the most unnecessarily difficult game to update and install add-ons that I've ever seen.  Partly the language barrier is to blame -- the dev's are not native English speakers by any stretch -- but I do think it's compounded by a pretty blatant indifference on Graviteam's part to making anything clearer and simpler in order to assist their Western customers.

Case in point -- as usual, no documentation describing the new features in any detail.  We have to figure out for ourselves what all the new 'radio' and 'transmitting' and 'receiving' icons and colors mean.  Thank goodness for a few really dedicated fans like Dane49 who make the effort to figure out and explain all these things for us -- in essence, doing Graviteam's work for them, for free.

If it were not such a brilliant game, I would have ditched it a long time ago for thee reasons.  But...it's undeniably unique, and worth putting up with all these hassles, IMO ...

Is the update cumulative or do you need to install Last Year's update if you don't have it?

I cobbled together someone else's instructions for installation and edited it a bit:

Quote
How to Install Achtung Panzer: Operation Star, updates, and DLC.

1)Install the base game

2) Install 581 patch by first Running * op_star_game_update_v581_eng_v2.exe *

3) Unzip the * k43t_apos_patch_aug12_eng_v3.exe * 7z file to a new folder you create

4) Go to game the directory where APOS was installed (C/Matrix Games/Achtung Panzer by default for my Matrix edition) and run the update.cmd file. This will open an updater program.

5) Click the Install button and point to the folder where you unzipped the * k43t_apos_patch_aug12_eng_v3.exe * file, open the Core folder and click on the desc.addpack. This will install the patch.

6) Install the Polygon optional patch by unzipping the * k43t_apos_upd_dist_taran_rakit_aug12_eng.exe * 7z file to a new folder.  Click the Install button and point to the folder where you unzipped the * k43t_apos_upd_dist_taran_rakit_aug12_eng.exe * 7z file,  open the Core folder and click on the desc.addpack. This will install the polygon patch.

7) Click on the Save and Play button

Game will be updated

*******************************************************
Then install the DLC's just like you did for the Polygon patch:

Like so:
4) Run update utility (click to game version in main menu).
5) In the window that appears, click "Install" button and select "CORE\desc.addpack" file in folder with unpacked update.
6) Wait for the installation.
7) Click "Save and Play" button.
*******************************************************

Just substitute the latest update file name for the "Aug12" one.

You can just plug in all the "desc.addpack" Updates at one time, into the Game Updater program, then Save & Exit.  I always put the core set and gfx one first, and then any others in whatever order.

I suggest copying & pasting this into a text file, and burning it off on a DVD along with the install files for future use.

I kept getting some corrupted files when I was d/l'ing that stuff earlier this month.  Finally got one to install from the download, even though I would get a corrupted file error that it wouldn't skip, from the same installer, after I burned it on DVD and tried installing to my notebook.  Odd.  >:(  IIRC, the corrupted files were always in some of the Windows support installers (like the DirectX & such).

If your talking about the DLC, yes, I think you have to upgrade for one or more of them, but they usually say on the Gamersgate page, what patch you need.. Gamersgate also has patches available.. but they don't have the 'new' ones yet..

Not sure if you can mix and match with Matrix, I know some games have issues with that, but not sure if that is the case here...

Tuna -- your update 'log' looks good -- same as what I have -- I don't think the polygon add-on changes anything in the log anyway.

Bismarck -- The most up-to-date game engine is 5.81, so you should update to that with the new Core update (should be an .exe).  The Core should be updated before anything else (add-ons etc.)

the Add-on's on Tuna's list are 'for sale' content -- not free.

...Isn't this a dandy way to update your games?   :-\

The cu file is not incremental.  You should be able to use it to patch from a clean install to the latest version of the core engine.  I got it to work.

The only thing I did different was to install directly to the c:\ and not the stupid program files (x86) folder.

When I run the Polygon update, it doesn't add anything to the update list.. is that the way it's supposed to be?

So now I have

(https://www.grogheads.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.murphyhomepage.com%2Ffiles%2Faposupdates.png&hash=d8bf5bb760b14910d1f4eea324c19386e8ccd09e)

the district update is the polygon update, my version number didn't change either, but you need to move it up the list to see in game eye candy changes. I have the district update first on my update list.

Really?!?

This is exactly the sort of thing that is pushing me to the edge of my patience with Graviteam.  You only ever find out important things like this 'by the way' -- nothing is ever explained clearly, and sometimes things just aren't explained at all.

That said --  What is the extra eye-candy the polygon / district update provides?  I moved the district update to the top of the list, and the only thing I noticed different was that my game suddenly lags a lot more on the same settings.  But I didn't notice anything different visually -- ??

The polygon thing is all visual stuff. Better models, uniforms,  more detail basically. I notice because i play on a laptop with integrated graphics, but if you play with high settings you probably have to look hard. You can always disable it or move it down if it slows too much. i hear ya on the frustration part. Once you get the patching thing down that's no problem, but the explanation of new stuff leaves alot to be desired. I still not sure about the comm stuff and the AI control stuff and the auto arty stuff and it gets old hunting the forums for answers and the in game help is not deep enough. The game is so damn good though and well supported. There are just some great moments that happen is this game....Stuff happens and you just sit back and go.....that was fu**ing cool.

Hmmm...I moved the district update to the top of my list and I don't think I've seen any changes to the graphics.

No change in performance though as I have everything cranked right up except for the grass which is set to High. Ultrahigh grass causes good slowdowns on my PC.

This kind of stuff is why playing Russian-developed games can be such a pain in the ass.  You only hear about the commonly odd stuff, like this, in these Russian games third hand.  Not only is their UI (and maybe some game mechanics) rather odd, but there isn't a direct line to those in the know if you speak English.   :o

I'd be doubtful if having to install the gfx update to the top is a must, but ya never know since the update process is odd in the first place.

hmmm.. ok, I already had the District Update and it was at 1.03, so like you said, it didn't change... Next time I have my Gaming PC setup, I'll try moving it to the top and see if I see a difference...

I did find it strange that the version number didn't change, it did last time I belive. It seem to install fine, no sure way to tell I guess when the version doesn't change. Haven't seen any description of what the polygon update does. I'll what's listed when it goes up on GG, maybe the visual upgrade is in my head :o. I'll post over at there forum and ask.

@Wallysworld:  Could you give a brief run-down of your system's specs?  I'm in the market for a new rig and am wondering just what it takes to play this game on Very High settings.

@Budd:  thanks for all the explanations -- I am *amazed* that you can play this game with an integrated graphics card.  I have a gaming laptop with SLI gtx 285m's that starts to struggle on Medium-High settings.  (Granted it's over 3 years old now, so not 'top of the line,' but a powerful laptop nonetheless that has trouble with APOS's eye candy).

Nothing special as it's three and a half year old machine with just a newer video card:

i7-920 at 4 Ghz
12 GB RAM
GTX 660 Ti 2 GB video card
Windows 7 64-bit

Here's good description of the new radio icon that each unit will display depending on the situation:http://graviteam.com/forum/index.php?topic=10925.msg30811#msg30811 (http://graviteam.com/forum/index.php?topic=10925.msg30811#msg30811)

^Thanks -- glad to see it doesn't take a supercomputer to get high-level performance, although your system is definitely no slouch --

Well over at graviteam Andrey was surprised i could run it. I have to re-balance after every patch. I have a second generation core I3 @ 2.2 with 8 gigs of ram and an HD3000 integrated video card with only 64 dedicated ram and up too 1.8 gigs of memory available for graphics. I've checked while playing and the most graphic ram i've seen it use is just under 1 gig. I get FPS in range from 10-25, I haven't noticed any stutter or massive slowdown and I have gotten pretty good at messing with the settings to get a balance between play and look. I tried the demo first to make sure i could run it at an acceptable level. I play with the limited battle radius setting and turn on the FPS monitor and test different video settings to tweak it.

An FYI that all of the DLC at Gamersgate have been updated to reflect the March 2013 patch changes. You'll have to download the install files from GG.

Is the update cumulative or do you need to install Last Year's update if you don't have it?

Good Quest. I do exactly as Wally said with the Matrix version - updating Mar13 core - but APOS won't run so there's no updater. Do we need Aug 12?

OK, a miracle happened and I got updated by applying Aug_12 and then Mar_13. I have the base Matrix game. What add-ons do I need? I have Sokolov and Kharkov in the campaign list.

What's up with the Hi-Res Pack?  Does it have new models and/or textures for everything in the game.. or just some specific units?

I haven't bought it either.

I figure.. the way Op Star runs on my pc, I shouldn't bother.   Damn thing is rather doggish even if I adjust some of the usual culprit settings.
