So, since I bought SimCity and got burned (like my city with improperly working firefighters), EA is "graciously" offering a free game from a fairly limited number of games on their catalog. I have narrowed the choice down to the above three (because I am not wasting a free game on a $7 copy of Bejewled or PvZ).

I wanted to get into Battlefield 3, but I suspect that the buzz for it has died down. I've never played Dead Space, but the third one sounded sort of neat and got reasonable reviews. I also don't have any racing games, and I imagine that I would have fun with Need For Speed (and this one seems to be fairly well received). I'm leaning toward NFS.

So, what would you all get?

Battlefield 3 is great, and I think you'll still find a lot of action with the recently released DLC Endgame.  Personally, I think I would pick Deadspace 3, because I already have the other two and knowing you, I'd think you'd like Deadspace the best of the three, as well...

I played the first Dead Space and loved it. If that s any indication, I too would go with Dead Space 3.

I'd go eith Deadspace 3 as well.

BF3 probably doesn't come with all the dozens of DLCs and expansions, and in any case BF4 is just around the corner.

Dead Space 3 also stiffs EA the most, as it is the highest listed price...  ;D

Just around the corner?? The reveal only is. Beta doesnt start until Fall. :)

Regarding the choice; I am torn between DS3 and ME3.

A quick aside if I could -- I haven't played any of these games but have wondered about BF3. 

Is BF3 at all worth the investment if you do not play multiplayer?  I generally don't do multiplayer, and I hear that BF3 multiplayer in particular is an arena for remorseless semi-professional FPS death merchants, thus making me even less inclined to move away from my low-stress single-player comfort zone.

And yet BF3 does look like a lot of fun.

When BF4 comes BF3 won't have very long to live.

Also, no bots in BF3, so you're stuck trying to find a good server for hours only to be immediately kicked out by a group of jerks who have taken over it.
(Which is pretty much the experience I had whenever I tried to play).

And the SP campaign is bland, boring and too much like CoD lite with QTE. :P

No. the single player content that is there is pretty lame and shouldn't have existed in the first place. Battlefield has always been about the multiplayer.

I haven't played any of them recently, but I don't think you're much of a FPS guy so I voted for Dead Space 3 :)

Shelling out for singleplayer only in BF3 would indeed not be my advice, but claiming that it is lame and should never have existed is exaggerating. You're probably talking about BF1942, which indeed had crap SP.
BF3 however, just like BFBC2, has a pretty cool SP campaign, but it's super short and you'll be done within 12 hours or so. That's the reason I would not advice anyone to buy BF for singleplayer only.
But if you're interested in the whole package (so you also like multiplayer) I think the added SP campaign is a nice extra. Especially since the game series have always been about MP in the first place.

I honestly thought it was garbage. It was clearly an afterthought. I think I made it an hour before just tossing it aside and getting into the MP. The Bad Company games had much better single player, and the campaigns were obviously better thought out since they were going to have single player campaigns from the beginning. the straight out Battlefield games should just be Battlefield games...stop trying to be Call of Duty and just make a great MP shooter.

LB, I actually love FPS, but I prefer open world ones. Far Cry 3 rocked me pretty hard and I'm certainly thinking about getting the upcoming Bioshock Infinite. But it is the MP part of BF3 that gives me pause - I won't have the DLC (don't want to buy it) and I'm not very social.  ;)

I have just started BF3's campaign and I can say I am enjoying it.  It has a Tom Clancy gritty realism to it compared to Call of Duty's often over-the-top cinematic war story approach.  Having said that, if you are only interested in playing SP, I wouldn't go with BF3 because you'll be done with the campaign before you know it. 

Like others have said, BF3 is all about the multiplayer - but don't let that scare you!  I am a rather casual player, certainly not a "semi-professional FPS death merchant  ;D"  and almost always have a great time.  I honestly cannot recall the last time I was "griefed" (i.e., given a hard time by nasty players) in a session of BF3 (albeit, in shooters you can rarely go wrong by hiding the chat screen  ;D) .  Most players are just there to have a good time like you are.  Now, that does not mean you won't feel like a walking bulls-eye when you first get started - BF3, like any good game, has a learning curve that requires practice to get better - but that doesn't mean you won't be capturing flags and zapping the others guys in no time.  So don't let what you heard about the MP scare you.  Again, just a casual player here, so if I can do it and have fun, so can you! 

Taken together, BF3's SP campaign, combined with the solid MP (especially if you go with the map packs), makes for quite the gameplay package.   

Hence, why I voted for BF3 in the poll.   :D

Thanks SoM, but here's my dilemma; I have ME 1 on the Xbox. Like playing it with a gamepad and have none for the PC.
ME2 still has to be played before I touch ME3 and I think I would prefer ME2 for the Xbox again... That makes ME3 a must-have in any case, I agree, but do I want it on the PC?

As I've only played BF3 on this list that gets my vote.  While the single player campaign was very well done and highly entertaining it is very short.  The true heart of the game lies in the MP action.  If you can get in a squad with a couple of your friends it is alot of fun.

Ahh.  Well, I often consider the gameplay nearly the same, between the two.  The only difference being where the camera is sitting and generally more action-y rolling & jumping around in the third-person ones.

I could not imagine playing ME on the X-Box controller, as I found I had super precision with the mouse (head shots galore). If you plan to play ME3 on the PC, then get ME2 on the PC, as your save games (and decisions) carry through to the third one. It is subtle, but people that do not survive in ME2 will not suddenly resurrect, for instance.

I went with Dead Space 3. I have Euro Trucker for my driving and Far Cry 3/Bioshock for my FPS. I could use a nice horror/shooter.

For me,  it is a choice between Mass Effect or Dead Space.  I'm  not into Sci Fi though.  Not into RPG.  And seen too many shooters already.  So what do I get?

me too, (i have BF3) (i hope Germany get the same game offer options so)
i watched 2 video reviews from German game mag ...and now leaning more to Dead Space 3.

will watch a few more videos / read reviews... doesn't have to decide today ;)
