As I am currently bored out of my mind during this gaming lull, I've been looking for some cheap entertainment. Well, it seems that Steam has Saints Row: the Third Complete on sale for $17. Anybody have any opinions on it?
I really like open world games, so this title always seemed interesting. I had a blast with the original Prototype because of all the mischief you could get into on the streets. :) I tried GTA4 but that one I didn't like because it struck me as a very sloppy console port. Anyhoo...how is this game? Anybody play it on the PC?
Never played it on the PC. I can say that the console version is a ton of fun. It's really juvenile and goofy (it's almost a parody of GTA) but it's a rich open world that you could sink hours into and that's before you start playing the campaign. I would definitely recommend it. If you're looking for a serious plot or a somewhat "realistic" feel then this is not the game for you as the whole tone is one of over-the-top adult humor (case in point you can use a gigantic purple dildo and a jar of farts as weapons).
Also there's a ton of customization if you're into that. Huge selection of clothing, jewelry, tattoos, cars are fully customizable and upgradeable for performance. Weapons are also upgradeable, you can purchase property, take over parts of the city for income, and unlock abilities with a pseudo-xp system. There's a lot. God talking about the game makes me want to play it again. :-)
I got it as a gift. Definitely not for me. I played for about 45 minutes before deleting it. Humour geared towards a junior high school locker room; consolized, twich based gameplay, poor writing, and pretty poor graphics.

Thanks for for the feedback guys! See, I like these open world games where you can cause a lot of mayhem. I remember laughing myself silly in Prototype when I would use my superpowers to pick up a car and throw it against a building and watch the chaos break out with people running and screaming ;D When my nephew and I would play we would almost laugh ourselves into unconsciousness! I'm dying for a game like that again. But I am also concerned about the juvenile humor and foul language. Stuff like that gets on my nerves real fast. Darn, I wish there was a demo.
Having said that, I see GameFly has Sleeping Dogs 75% off. From what I understand, this is a similar style of game, but with a more serious story. Any opinions on this title?
I enjoyed Sleeping Dogs a lot. Good melee combat, decent driving, good voice acting and looks very nice in the PC. If you're playing for the story, it's probably your best bet. As an open sandbox, run around and cause mayhem type game though, it doesn't offer up as much in the way if mini-games and diversions as Saints Row though.

Ah, I see. Something tells me I might wind up with SR3 anyway as I like diversions.

Yeah, I did that. I watched some guy play through the first 10 missions and while there was an unfortunate amount of profanity, and some wacky missions, I really didn't see anything that terrible. Is the really juvenile stuff saved for MP? Or is the juvenile stuff related to the actions of the player (like running around naked...as I see a lot of players like to do in this game ::))?
I never could get into the GTA series, or some of the others like it.
About the only action game similar to these open sandbox mayhem ones, that I could get into, was Just Cause 2. Never did actually progress very far in any of the missions.. just wreaking havoc.

Well, you can attack people with a dildo bat. There is a stage where you chainsaw attackers to death while your friend engages in a wrestling match (the fact that the song from this clip (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oomCIXGzsR0) plays during the stage had me laughing so hard I had to pause). One of the characters is a pimp. There is A LOT of completely inappropriate humor...you know, if you find basically any humor inappropriate. ;D
There's also a long run gag that is clearly a send up of the insanity reached by the War on Terror, and a lot of other surprisingly smart stuff.
Okay, I'm sold. :D

Wow that's interesting as I found the opposite to be true. The plot of earlier GTAs are really shallow and rather juvenile. For instance most earlier GTAs the main character would never talk. I found Niko Bellic's story to be really compelling especially since his back story is grounded in a conflict that is very much real and serious which lends further weight to the richness of the character.
Well, for me GTA4 is too close to real compared to earlier games. I no longer find it funny to run over pedestrians and generally go on psychopathic bastard murder death sprees. :( Also the car handling is less fun now.
If Saints Row 3 is the remedy to all of that, I suspect I'll love it.

I totally agree with you regarding the central character being more interesting. My issue is with the pointless side crap they've basically made mandatory. Go hang out with your game buddies...chat up your game girlfriend...waste a bunch of time with crap like that. It's completely dull.
I just want to thank everyone who recommended this game! I really didn't think I would like it, and that I was going to waste $17 on the Full Package. But...13 hours in and having a good time. Yes, the humor can be cringe-worthy at times, and some of the characters I would like to throttle the life out of (one character in particular: that pimp with the autotune. >:( What dev thought him up?!?). But having said that, I am finding the main campaign to be a heck of a lot of fun, with some great action sequences that rival Call of Duty. And there really are a ton of side missions to keep you busy! I wish, though, that the game had a bit more of an economic side: I like how you can buy property, but I wish there was more of a profit and loss thing going on.
Anyway, against all expectations, I am having a really good time. ;D
And I can't believe I am saying this...but suddenly SR4 is at the top of my list!
As you can see, it is going to have more of a sci-f approach - space aliens, a Matrix-like Steelport, and other wackiness. Good call. 8)
BTW: I wrote up a bit of an AAR in my blog (you might want to skip the initial political stuff, though, as I tied the game to the recent cries of bigotry in gaming) so other fence sitters can see what the actual gameplay is like - I probably would have purchased this game sooner if Volition did something similar instead of pitching this game in its wacky fashion. ::)
It's such a fun game...with so many moments that can be summed up in just a few words.

Ok I'm right with you there. I found the main campaign great but the side diversions you mentioned generally fell flat. If you don't hang out with your "friends" when they call you your relationship suffers. I mean I have to coordinate my social and work schedule in real life and it's a pain in the ass. What makes the developers think I want to do that in a video game?
I've got 4 stars and the SWAT team is bearing down on my ass and all of sudden Brucie's feelings are hurt when I don't want to go play pool with him at some dive bar? Really Brucie? Turn on the TV and watch the news - I'M A LITTLE BUSY...

I just picked this up (cheap) thanks to this thread. Played for an hour or so last night and really enjoyed it. It has everything I liked about GTA at its peak (i.e. Vice City) and, so far at least, none of the bullshit. Combat and driving are both fun as hell, the massive customisation options (both characters and cars) are welcome, and there are some notable improvements over GTA such as a seemingly infinite garage to store cars and being able to customise radio stations.
Late to the party - but Saints Row Third is a fantastic game. Lots and lots and lots of game. It's not serious and I'd likely go with SDR's description of it - but add to that LOTS OF FUN.
I bought Sleeping Dogs on the Steam sale at Christmas and haven't touched it yet. That's not a reflection of the game - I just haven't got round to it - that and the demo ran like a pig on my mediocre system.
I think we are all agreed: SR3 is a entertaining game!

My guy wore nothing but cowboy boots and a cowboy hat - they blur out all the "fun stuff" but I'm sure the PC version has a mod for that. Generally I'm wearing the same outfit when I'm perusing the forums...
If you can unlock it, get Mr. Genky's cannon car. Nothing beats sucking people up into a massive cannon as they innocently stroll down the street - and then firing them at 300 fps into oncoming highway traffic.
