2) What I do: Buy everything that looks pretty and then read the crappy reviews and bad opinions on here. It helps increase the hurt immeasurably.

I've actually been doing pretty good lately.
Its an illusion I am told.
What am I supposed to do about Bioshock Infinite? Just wait until the price drops below 60.00, get some more free games with a preorder, or none of the above?
The solution I found is to get more money. It makes the other problem manageable.
After hearing about a game that sounds appealing to me either on this forum or somewhere else, I generally check:
- DAEMON Tools (http://forum.daemon-tools.cc/gamedb.php) to find out what type of DRM it has.
Metacritic (http://www.metacritic.com/game/pc) for its rating.
Didimatic (http://didimatic.com/dd/en/onsale/) to find the cheapest place to buy it.
The best way I've found to avoid winding up with a game I don't like is to take a friend's advice about whether or not to buy a particular game. However, it is imperative that the friend have the same taste in games that I do. Even then I've ended up with a few games I didn't much care for, but the number is minimal.

Yeah, me too. Largely because I have been using this gaming lull to pick up titles from last year at deep discounts. ;D The one title I was unsure about - Saints Row 3 - the guys around here filled me in and steered me right. :-*
My (slightly pre-)NY's resolution to finish five games before buying a new one has helped me get through my typical Valentine's Day depression without splurging horribly on a mess of perfectly worthy games (and no doubt some clunkers) that I may never actually get around to playing.
It did not, admittedly, help me get through my pre-Christmas splurge. But to be fair, that was before my NY's resolution. ;D
Suprisingly I am enjoying Elven Legacy alot. Got it because it was nose bleedingly cheap and well ... because someone on this forum said it was good.

Strangely enough that is what I am playing right now.
I'm thinking about going back to EL, too, this week, for a change of pace. (There are six campaigns and I'm only somewhere in the first, I think.)
Windy, remember that even if you finish all six campaigns (the latter three of which are expansions, although you may have gotten those in a package deal), there are still ANOTHER three campaigns with the same game engine in Fantasy Wars, human, orc and elven. (Narratively they occur before anything in Elven Legacy.)
So if you like it, there are a staggering NINE CAMPAIGNS (with a couple dozen missions each) in that game engine. It's like having all the Panzer Corps campaigns together. (Except in bright 3D fantasy art instead of top down 2D WW2 art. Same basic Panzer General game engine though.)

With digital distribution...there is more cr*%p out there than ever before. Plus there are plenty of ways to buy the old cra&%p.
I have found that meta score sites give a pretty good overall feel for the games I buy. Also most games go on sale after three months or so...so I rarely buy when they are first released. Still I have managed to buy some stinkers...just haven't paid much for them thankfully.
