... Know there has been some talk of this lately and I have never seen it so cheap.
Way ahead of you bub,

:)
Keeep forgetting about that thread. Duh...
I reckon this is huge enough to deserve a thread of its own! ;)
Go ahead, good Grogs! Buy it, play it, love it!
I would pay £80 for a game like this, its one, if not the best turnbased stategy games you will play!
I know the description over at GG says this is a turn based strategy game but the battle screenshots look very total war'ish. Are battles also turn based? If they are this is a no brainer purchase for me.
You have no control over the battles w8 - you set up the formations and what you'd like the troops to do for the battle and then watch the movie - no input from the player
^Thanks. Not exactly the answer I was hoping for however at it's current pricepoint and all the enthusiasm here by fellow Grogs makes me believe I won't regret getting this game. Hence, after work I shall purchase this game! ;D
I doubt you'll regret it. It really is an incredible game and extremely involving. It's one of those games that has so much content that it almost feels like there are no rules. I love it!
With the recent influx of new players, y'all should get a multiplayer game going!
Listen to huw
He knows what he's talking about
As for MP - do it ASAP - its brilliant
Not sure if I will like, but for that price, I bought anyway:)
As did I.
I don't even have a clue as to when I'd ever even get around to playing it. ::)

Sooner rather than later. Trust me - the Force is strong in this one. ;)

Thanks. bought and lost my first game.
I actually bought this a second time, because all I have is the old CD version with the activation code scribbled on the side of the paper sleeve. The price is cheap enough to justify a digital backup copy.

+1 Same here
Picked the game up last night and spent almost 2 hours with it. So graphic eye candy wise this game looks and feels like something out of the early '90s. In fact when I turned the battle quality graphics to High I got some weird background flashing. Turned down the battle graphics to normal and the flashing disappeared. I'm getting 30FPS at this setting.
That is probably the only negative criticism I'll give for this game. There is something about this game that arouses the strategic thinker. I have no clue about what to do but I find this game addicting. How could such a visually simple looking game be so complex and twisted that it sucks you right in? I'm loving it! (I ended my first game due to 180 warriors showing up at my door laying siege to my city. I thought I had an impressive 25 unit army broken up into two squads and led by my god leader but everyone died when I tried to sortie out the gates.)
@ Nefaro
Thanks for the links. Bookmarked both. This should be enough to help me figure out this pretty cool little strategy game.
when i get chance to post the links i will - there are 2 must views. 1 is a guy on youtube - das somebody - he has 30 videos as a lets play from picking your god and why, thru tax, thru magic and into combat - its brilliant
and an aar of about 80 episodes - both links are in the other thread about why everyone was suddenly playing the game
ill dig em up when i can
and get your ass in an MP game - id join another newbie game - it doesnt matter what mistakes you make, everyones new, its not like someones going to come waltzing in with 'awesome power of doom' spells and humiliate everyone

Not a chance! :P
dammit SoM - it was worth a try
I'm looking for some more basic information on how to play this game. The links provided in this thread as well as the manual are all excellent. They are full of very detailed information. The manual even has a walkthrough for several scripted turns.
This is all well and good however what I'm looking for is just some basic explanations of what all of the icons on the map and surrounding text boxes mean. There is also nothing in the manual that explains what the little icons in a commander window mean. Is there some sort of guide out there that just breaks down the different screens without a lot of wordy backstory and excess text that points me to another section to get more info?
These guides appear to be written for someone who has 10+ years experience playing the game as well as a PHD in Dominions 3. :)

Dsa24680 is someone after my own heart--not only does he have videos of
Dominions 3, but he also has videos of
Fallen Enchantress,
Distant Worlds,
Age of Wonders and other games.
Another YouTube contributor who has uploaded over 30 videos of
Dominions 3 is HerrSunk (http://www.youtube.com/user/HerrSunk/videos?query=Dominions+3)
W8, I experienced exactly the same thing and it is frustrating. Honestly the best advice I can give besides what Gameleaper and Greybriar already have is to dive into the single player. Just create some random maps with plenty of opponents (so that you can see how the other nations work) and really experiment. You got nothing to lose!
In other news, why do some spells appear blue in the spell list?

Most symbols in the game interface have an extra info window if you rt-click on a stat or symbol. While they don't go into precise details, it will definitely prime you on what they do.

Blue-colored spells are Nation-specific ones. Most nations have a few of their own unique ones.
Ah! Thanks Nef!
W8 the das ones are essential - the guy is revisiting the game after not playing for ages - no phd required, he makes mistakes goes thru whole episodes on the interface, describes what every unit stat means and how the games matches those against the enemy ones - tbh - everything you need to know is in there - the first hour is picking a god, why, how and what it will effect
Ok I haven't read anything yet. How do you build structures and province improvements?

At the bottom left of a commander's icon is shown what its current activity is. Default is "Defend" I believe. Click on "Defend" or whatever and you will be given a menu of actions available to that particular unit, one of which should be "
Construct Building."
At least that's how I've been doing it.
The only stuctures you actually build are fortifications, labs and temples. Priests build temples, any mage can build a lab and any commander at all can build a fortification. The only other province improvement is province defense, which is abstracted as a numerical value. The more gold you spend on it, the more "free" troops you get defending a province. You should read about these in the manual because there are many implications to all of them.
True, the game is deceptively simple that way.
Then you learn that apparently not even the developers have ever written down all the rules in once place before. :o
(Incidentally, this is the cheapest I've ever seen the game. Spent around $70 on the previous Dom2, and $70 again on the initial release of Dom3. The third version was definitely worth that price.)
If I'd known just how amazing Dom3 is, I would've ordered the physical copy from Shrapnel whatever the cost. Ah well.
Guys, thank you so much for those tips and video links. Das is absolutely brilliant and watching his first three videos have improved my understanding of the game considerably. I'm very grateful for your help.
HerrSunk is an interesting character. He seems to blow right through the instructions but his style is good for learning some tips quickly. Das elaborates on and on but it is done systematically. When you don't have a lot of time to watch a video turn to HerrSunk.
I still can't believe how deep this game really is. I wish I had learned about it sooner because this is a game that will stand the test of time. Now I'm thinking I should look into some of the other games this company has turned out because obviously they do quality work. I'm hooked!!
