I have to say that one of the coolest games to come to the PC recently is Mode 7's Frozen Synapse. Between the slick cyberpunk stylings, its WEGO format, and some of the best music I've ever heard in a game, Frozen Synapse is a game every tactical fan MUST play at some point.
Here's a recent match I played. It was a real edge of your seat game where I figured I was doomed because his RPG was really laying the hurt down..but somehow pulled out a win (I'm green, and during the game LoS rules were in effect):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wx6JGj1dQyw
I was happy when my shotgunner ambushed the RPG. He made my life miserable. ;D
FS games might be short - just a few seconds - but they seem to last a lifetime due to the tension. :)
BTW: FS fans can look forward to some DLC soon (another campaign or additional missions, new game modes, and a new unit), as well as a port to tablets. I think FS is made for the world of tablet gaming, so I expect it is going to do very well.
Now that we have a few games going on, let's continue in this thread. :)
Huw I managed to upload our last match with the Grenade heavy forces; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XeCKWEmZsd4
Lol! It even recorded your lunch. :2funny:
Cool, thanks Ysk! That was a fun match - three grenadiers and one gunner each! I have to admit that the first turn went better than I'd hoped (mostly because you forgot to move your gunner ;)) but then it was just cat and mouse, 3v1. You were never going to recover from that!
Our first match would be a good learning match for others looking to play, so I'll try and find somewhere to upload it then I'll explain what happens during the match.
Hmmm.... Huw can't seem to find the right you.... :crazy2: Try sending me a game.....
OK, what's your username?
Ummm... Barthheart..... ;)
yea i caught your thread and .................................reloaded FS and RT....damn i'm so easy to influence. If i get time tonight[after my list, i think today is the garage cleaning]and after a quick refresher i'm going to try get some FS in. I have a second key for red turn that i'm not sure if I already gave away yet or not if someone wants to give it a try, no promises it hasn't been used i can't remember.
post the links to your replays it would be fun to see.
my user name on FS .....is of course .... budd...... hope i get some time to join in, always willing to play the whipping boy.
Budd I'd love to take that Red DLC key if you still have it please! Will also send you a turn later on. :)
I'm uploading mine and Yskonyn's first battle now.
Video is up! (https://vimeo.com/99422606)
I'm busy right now but I'll be back later to provide some commentary.
Here is the first game I had with Barthheart. As you can see, the opening seconds were decisive as Barthheart's two soldiers were caught between a rock and a hardplace. Once I had them with the RPG, there really wasn't much he could do:
We are in a second game now and it is MUCH closer. A real nail-biter!
PS: I am very happy to see the renewed interest in this game. 8)

OK here's what's happening. At the beginning, I assumed Ysk's gunner would get behind the low cover as it was a pretty good vantage point, so I went around the back for an easy kill. Unfortunately Ysk second-guessed it and had his gunner waiting for mine - an excellent kill and well deserved.
Meanwhile I knew his grenadier would stay in the room in which he'd begun, so the rocket and grenade combo was a fairly sure kill - which it was. He'd have had to leave the room altogether to survive the first turn.
My grenadier moved into cover, while my rocket guy also sought cover. At this point, the planner said he'd survive fire from Ysk's other gunner which is why I let him continue. Unfortunately he didn't...if I'd realised, I'd have had him get behind the low cover just to the left instead.
I knew where that gunner was, however, so I fired a grenade his way. I'm not sure whether Ysk forgot to move him, or he was rooted in place because he was firing at my rocket guy, but staying put was what got him killed.
Ysk's rocket launch at 8 seconds gave away his position, so I deliberately had my gunner aim in that direction, and it paid off. Suddenly Ysk was down to his last man, that damned gunner who got mine in the first turn. There wasn't much he could have done at this point. I knew he wouldn't go up because he knew my grenadier was up there, so I had my gunner move around the right side of the room in the corner to set up an ambush, which the poor guy promptly ran into.
It was closer than it looked. If Ysk had moved his gunner in the top-left corner to avoid my grenade he would've had two gunners against my gunner and grenadier. I enjoyed that fight!

Heh. Poor Bart, that was a nasty setup. What I would have done in his shoes, knowing that friendly fire is on so the rocket wouldn't have gone anywhere else, is fire a grenade through the window - bouncing it off a wall and almost certainly killing the rocket launcher inside - then rush to cover the doorway to the right, firing another grenade inside during turn 2. Meanwhile I would've had my gunner run down the map and heading for one of those bits of low cover. From there he would have commanded a good half of the map and would have made short work of your advancing shotgunner.
And you just made short work of me!
I was feeling pretty confident after the initial exchange but everything went to heck after that. ;D The game was lost for me when my MG hesitated after he spotted your shotty coming up the map. I figured you would do that, but in my planning I got the drop on you before you could close the distance. Actual results varied. :'(
After that your guy just went all Rambo! :)
Edit: I like how you cleared the room! LOL! Also, sent a second challenge. Is it a new feature that certain games of elimination have random capture points? Looks like ours does!

Yep, totally botched that game. Should never have two guys crossing at a point in the open like that.
My only excuse, is I haven't played in well over a year... yeah I know it s a poor excuse but that's all I got. :buck2:

No excuse needed, FS is a harsh game. :buck2: That is one of the things I always liked about it. Unlike a lot of tactical games where units seem to empty magazine after magazine into the enemy with little result, FS actually has more of a realistic vibe with "one shot, one kill" being the rule of the day.
I added you guys to my friends list. Is it Huw or huwie or both so i can add you. I sent the turn to Rooks.....what a Fu**ed up starting position....ahahaha .. it don't look good :P

Same here with the friends list.
I liked that random map because of the big room set-up. But I wasn't expecting it to work out too well for me. The Shape was kind to me. ^-^
Hey Barthheart, if you want another game just challenge away! Same for everybody else! Having fun. O0
(To bad Shadowrun Returns doesn't have a similar skirmish system. :( That would be epic too!)
BTW: FS is coming to the Sony Vita! They changed the look a bit:
Apologies to all - something has come up this weekend, along with guests we weren't expecting, so I'm not sure how much FS I'll be able to play until this evening/tomorrow.
Check dem grafix on the Vita version, eh?! It looks amazing, although I still prefer the neon aesthetic.

For Huw
you dont have this button?

that is weird. You might just need a patch. I looked for my version # but cant see it anywhere. in my main FS directory there is an update folder and in that there is an update exe. that checks for updates.
Are you Huw or huwie in FS?
Budd - thanks. I don't have the button, and I don't have the store button either. It's activated through Steam so surely I have the latest version?
I'll try downloading the game from the Mode7 website which will hopefully have the button, then try activating it on Steam again, or something.
do you have the update folder in your main FS directory?
i got mine at matrix and the red DLC at GG. Wonder if i am able to get a steam key for them?
Oh, I'm huwie in the game by the way. :)

Don't worry about it. That is the great thing about turn-based games - no rush!

So do I. In fact, reading some of the comments, it seems most people do. But I guess they felt that if it was going on a Sony machine, the graphics would have to be more flashy.

Yeah, you are getting your revenge in that one! Ouch!
QuoteCan't seem to get videos to upload to my youtube channel.... I've done it once before, last year but doesn't work now..... ???
It is quirky. I noticed that after validating my install files, suddenly I couldn't upload to Youtube either...but then it started working again a few games later. What you could do is select "Record Offline" (I think that is the term in the menu). What it will do is save the game as "record.ogv" in your FS directory. Just go into Youtube and upload that file!
As for this activate DLC button: I do have it. Maybe if you have it, you already have the RED DLC? Go into options and see if you can select red mode. You could also just validate your files on Steam or just delete and reinstall. It won't mess with your games any.

if you had the red DLC it would show here.
Budd just nailed me:
My plan was to turn that dividing wall into one large frag grenade. Unfortunately, Budd scattered his vatforms before I could do so. And then I made a mistake by running my RPG into a position from whence he could be shot in the back.
What a cluster*@^$ ;D
yea but first you nailed me ;)
Budd and I just finished a Hostage mission. These are fun because they provide a slightly different formula to the standard elimination. In hostage, one side is tasked with preventing the hostages from escaping, while the other controls the hostages, and his own team, and must get at least one hostage out of the map alive. It is very challenging.
This was a good game but it was marred by an oddity where I thought Budd had three guys (a shotgunner, a MG and a sniper). Turns out there were only two on Budd's team - which is weird because Budd said he saw a dead body in the set-up zone that we can't account for (the missing shotty?).
I moved my sniper from guarding the hostages right went Budd sent them a runnin'! And why? Because I was positive the phantom shotty was coming up behind me! Urgh!!!! >:(
I love this game. ;D
you forgot to tell them about the game before when i ran the hostages out the wrong exit zone :idiot2: thought that was too easy.

All you guys have proven far more of a challenge to me than the general FS player. I usually have very little problem with random matches, but you guys are making me sweat blood in every match! 8)
Damn guys! Save for one match (I think against you Barth) where one of my machine guys got lucky, you guys are absolutely slaughtering me! :smitten:
I still have some trouble with the odd order that doesn't work the way I intended, like a dude walking backwards after having shot, right into the next enemy where he was supposed to aim in that direction... :P But we're learning as we go.
I have also found that you can drag orders to make them go active 'along the route' instead of 'at a waypoint', which helps.

There is a surprising amount of depth to the orders system. I never tried what you wrote above...but now I have too! :) I've also been using the "check" feature lately. It is a nice feature where you can tell your vatform to briefly turn in a direction, such as checking his rear, or just looking in a room on the way past, without adjusting his aim. Mode 7 really did a good job with this game.
Yeah, I just discovered the "check" command as well.... it must be new from the last time I played... about a year ago.

A perfect game, Barth! Nicely done. Everything went wrong for me! LOL! :))
Yeah, the second kill was cheesy as there was a tiny gap between two rooms.
Next game should be interesting too...
I don't think I've played as much FS since I bought the game as I have in the last few days. Thanks all for rekindling my enjoyment of the game.
:)
i need to pay more attention, i keep getting my ass handed to me. I'm learning........ slowly.........and i'm coming for you ALL :knuppel2:
Now time to go see what disaster i've gotten myself into again.........keep the games coming i'm enjoying it.
There's a check command?! :o
Budd, methinks you're about to kick my ass in our match. I got WAAYYYY overaggressive and ran my rifleman right into your grenades. :uglystupid2:
Just won a close match with Barthheart...couldn't find his last gunner for ages, then I took a gamble and got my gunner and rocket launcher to start covering a different section of the map, and that's precisely where he was.
It gets very tense when the last time you saw your enemy was 10s ago! :)
Yeah that was a great game. My gunner was skirting around the edge as you were firing up into the far corner.... then suddenly you were looking out a window at me! BLAM! O0

Wonder if beer will improve my play O0 come holiday weekend.
P.S. wont get to my turns until tonight,
I am confused about the Disputed game mode. What happens if nobody gets three red squares? Does it then become a game of elimination? I just lost this game and I am not sure why:
I figured since there were no more boxes available, it was time to run for the border. I guess not. Looks like I just conceded defeat by withdrawing my sniper. :) I guess we were supposed to fight it out to the last man standing?
Well, at least my sniper got out alive. He was only two days from retirement.... C:-)
Yeah I think it just becomes a elimination game after that. I was worried about how I was going to get that sniper too! :knuppel2:
Sorry for the delay guys, got sent out of town fer work. Will try to do tonight...
Finally got a win. That was nice of you to run into my grenades ;D Here's the game

Sorry, I just saw this post, budd! With the bid games, I always let the AI bid for me because I am never sure what to bid on! LOL! As for the collect the red squares game, that is a tough one. I like it because it prevents turtling, but it is a very challenging mode. Interestingly, I won two games today while drinking a Pina Colada, so maybe that does help. ;D
