Title: Friday coronation - Alexios I Komnenos is crowned!
Post by: MetalDog on April 05, 2013, 05:44:55 AM
It's Friday again and the weekend is ahead!  The game playing goodies for me include Warlock and Civ IV BTS MP.  I'm looking for something else to AAR and should wrap up my current one sometime on Saturday.  So I'll be searching through my games to see what I can find.

Trying to finish the Terran campaign in StarCraft II.  Then probably some more Far Cry 3.  Also hopefully getting started with the RPG DD is running here on the forums (http://grogheads.com/forums/index.php?topic=5365.0).

Hopefully next part of our Warlock MP.
Some new HoS testing.
Hopefully some board gaming goodness - Dawn's Early Light.

This weekend I'll no doubt be moving along on the two Groghead Dom3 mp games; hopefully by next weekend I'll be starting the third game (for the Middle Age), slots for which are still open if anyone wants in by the way! (http://grogheads.com/forums/index.php?topic=5408.0)

Otherwise, fiddling with WW1Gold after the most recent update (anyone interested in a newbie four-player mp pbem game? (http://grogheads.com/forums/index.php?topic=5425.0) -- I'll play Russia!); chugging along my first playthru of Uncharted 1; maybe restarting my Elven Legacy campaign (the saves for which didn't port over to my new computer for no clear reason. But I had only played a few missions, so no biggie.)

Also, continuing my Epic Dr. Who watchthru -- I should finish the fifth story and at least start the sixth this weekend. (I started all the way back in 1963 with the very first story, and shall slowly collect this year. Missing eps/stories will be supplied by the Loose Cannon reconstructions on YouTube; I've already watched "Marco Polo", story 4, this way.)

Busy weekend as far as work goes, so I won't have a lot of time for gaming.  Phantom Leader for sure, as I continue to try not to suck, and the new build of Broken World, if it makes it out today.  Also there is a particular Beta I was accepted for, but still haven't gotten a download link. I'm hoping that shows up today as well.

The virtual airline I flew for abruptly shut down earlier this week so I guess I'll do less flying and more wargaming.

Just bought Theatre of War so I'll be playing around with that.
Trying out the World of Conflict demo.
Playing the 1980 Soviet Invasion campaign in CM:Afghanistan.

Blizzard gave me a free week of World of WarCraft, so I'll be saying "Hello" to some friends ingame this weekend. World of Tanks is having an Arctic Exploration Weekend (http://worldoftanks.com/news/2192-arctic-exploration-weekend/) and I'll be spending a few hours playing WoT. I'm not sure what else, but with my gaming backlog I am not lacking for PC games to play.

Don't really know what I'm going to be up to.  I'm expecting a new machine with roughly twice the power of my current i5 1 gig graphics set up and I'm kind of getting interested in Cliffs of Dover so I don't want to get sucked into say RoF or ARMAIII too much.

So it might be a board game weekend, maybe with Easy Company getting driven out of Nuenen in Where Eagles Dare just because that won't be to hard to imagine.

Working on the ends and outs of PQ-17's PQ-17 might be too much for me in my current state of imaginative absorbtion in  Cliffs of Dover.

I'm in the middle of working ten nights straight, so no telling as to how much gaming I'll manage to get in this weekend.  I'll hopefully be doing some beta-testing, but we'll see.

Dominions 3 - got a couple of splendid Groggy games on the go!

Dawn of Fantasy - time to see what they've done with a couple of years' worth of development.

Frozen Synapse - hopefully continuing to kick Arctic's arse and apparently Undercovergeek wants some pain too!

Dunno what else.  Probably some Saints Row 3 on the sexybox and some Android: Netrunner with my lady; we're 2-2 at the moment so the next game's the decider!

Asssuming I don;t have to work to much this weekend, I'll be splitting most my time between a new game of Fallout 3 and Distant Worlds modding. I've never been able to get very far into FO3, hopefully 3rd time is a charm. As for DW, I realized when I was doing my all humans mod that you can change the percentages for fleet composition on a per race basis. So I am in the process of increasing the numbers for both capital ships and cruisers, and reducing the amount of escorts and frigates the AI builds (hopefully).

I'll probably play some Skyrim as well, but I'm a little burn't out on it.

Probably put some more time in to Frozen Synapse  in an attempt to be at least competitive. I'm sure I will play something else, I'm just undecided at the moment.

Hoping to get a board game night in this weekend. I have a pile of new stuff to play! Relic, Kemet and maybe Space Cadets would likely top the list.

If my wife heads to bed early, I plan to get drunk and play Brutal Legend.

BMS Falcon will likely figure into the equation this weekend, and I may go through the pain of hooking up the wheel and pedals to get some F1:2012 in as well.

Well, I'll tell you what I won't be playing (besides Dawn of Fantasy (http://grogheads.com/forums/index.php?topic=5406.msg130487#msg130487)) - and that's Red Orchestra 2.  After many attempts at getting it to run and remember my graphics settings (first game I've played in a long time which couldn't figure out my resolution by the way), I played the tutorial and first part of the first mission before having to go out.

I sit down to play it again this evening...the first REALLY IRRITATING THING is that I was forced to watch the cut scene introducing the first mission again.  The second is that the game crashed just before the cut scene ended.  Loaded the game back up, it happened again.  Screw this.

I am not having much luck with games tonight. :(

That's how I got it too - thought it was a steal at the time!  You know what PC gaming is like; perhaps I'm just unlucky this time.  Don't let it put you off.

I heard that it was buggy as shit on release, but I'd also heard that it's been generously patched since then too.

Well, as it turns out, after posting I went and fired up the game. I started a SP game and went through the tutorial. The weapons stations were a good refresher and introduced some new things (or ones I was not aware of in RO1) such as single shot mode with the MG42 (MMB/wheel click) and blind-fire mode (crouched behind cover holding up the submachine gun sideways like in a Bruce Willis movie and sweeping). All went well until the grenade toss. I threw the sumbitch at the target, it went BOOM, and the game locked up. It locked HARD, needing Alt-tab and the Task Manager Kill (multiple times) to take the exe down. It didn't actually drop off the active list for about five minutes, and all the while my 'puter ran like crap until a reboot.
I am not feeling good about this at all. :-\

Well, you just never know what the weekend will bring, do you?

I find myself spending the last 2 hours playing the Combat Mission: Shock Force demo, and now I find myself reaching for my credit card.

I'm like 3 years late to the party, but man what a fun game that is!  And man, do I completely and utterly suck at land-based tactical combat!  I think I lost the demo mission I played something like 1400 to 200.  Whew!   ;D

I'm just going to get the base game for now since it's only $15.  They have the NATO, BF, and Marines bundle for $40 extra clams.  That's a lot of gaming for $55!

Not to encourage you to spend your money, but shell out for the full game with expansion Toonces.  The other armies are very fun to play and offer a wide range of modern equipment to kick insurgent ass with.

I'm on day 6 of a long Hornet Leader campaign in North Korea. My boys need to pull up their socks if I'm going to have any chance of getting out of this one with a satisfactory rating.

Bought Steam & Iron last night. Awaiting activation code so I can fire it up. Started an HOI III (TFH) campaign as the Japs while I wait.

From my first and only game with the Troll King, I recall it being mainly about big nasty scary beefcakes and not so much large hordes of soldiers, with them.  I don't recall the mechanics and troop costs, though.  Hrmm.. now I'm gonna fire up COE3 and try some of the nations I've not run with much yet.  8)

The biggest problem with COE3 is keeping the AI players from killing each other off too quickly.   :P

Well I think I'm on the verge of winning my first game.  Right now I'm facing off against a couple of monster stacks from my largest rival.  Next time I load it up we should engage in the winner takes all battle.  One thing about the Troll King is that yes you have some big heavy hitters and Mum can call in a dragon or two to fight in your armies, but it's the dozens of goblin archers and footmen who chew up the ranks of your enemies.  I think my monster stack army has like 50+ archers which are pewpewing the enemy to submission 1-3 points of damage at a time while they focus their attacks on my giants and trolls.

Not all that similar.  There's no structure building or anything of that nature in COE3, you just capture stuff that was randomly placed on the map for income.  The real strength of it is the large variety of troops, and the different strengths of the nations.  Many of them have a specific resource that they get from specific terrain and can use those to summon fantastic monsters or essentially level-up their mages to be able to cast more powerful spells and summons.  Being made by the same people as Dominions 3, it has many of the same units.  It's simple turn-based game but all the content really makes it interesting in a quick playing beer & pretzels flavor.  I still fondly recall the time I managed to summon a Tartarian Spirit with my Necromancer 'class' or the big Carrion thing that grows stronger with each kill it makes.  Oh sweet rampage!  8)  The bestest mythological/fantasy units to be found in the genre, for sure.  If you feel like a fantasy strategy game with complicated game mechanics, this is a good cheap option and a nice 'lite' alternative to Dom3.

Here's a wiki with a listing of some of the Classes to be had in COE3, and the possible recruits & summoned units they can get (if you click on one):
http://coeiii.wikia.com/wiki/Classes

**************

I mentioned a multi-player game earlier because it seems to be rather popular (even relatively so on Steam for such a game) and only played via direct IP.  I don't think it lends itself to a PBEM format because each turn can be finished so quickly but there can be a lot of them.  Even with three our four armies wandering around, it usually only takes me 10-15 seconds to move them and do recruitment/summons.  It's watching the battles that takes time and I'm not sure how that's handled in multiplayer - it may just shoot straight to the results.

It's Friday again and the weekend is ahead!  The game playing goodies for me include Warlock and Civ IV BTS MP.  I'm looking for something else to AAR and should wrap up my current one sometime on Saturday.  So I'll be searching through my games to see what I can find.

I did succeed in not doing anything very interesting in the world of games.  The Son Bridge scenario (complete with Easy company all set to
rout out of Nuenen) was a bit too wasy to imagine so  I started working on a scenario that starts with the 101's drop north of Eindhoven and goes from there.  Hopefully figuring out when the Guards Armoured actually reached the area north of Eindhoven won't be too hard to fit into the scenario.

How does CoE compare o Warlock? They sound similar.

**************

I mentioned a multi-player game earlier because it seems to be rather popular (even relatively so on Steam for such a game) and only played via direct IP.  I don't think it lends itself to a PBEM format because each turn can be finished so quickly but there can be a lot of them.  Even with three our four armies wandering around, it usually only takes me 10-15 seconds to move them and do recruitment/summons.  It's watching the battles that takes time and I'm not sure how that's handled in multiplayer - it may just shoot straight to the results.

One of the great features is that even though you might play the same race every game, the spells your casters know are randomized so you'll almost never end up with the exact same spells.  This really can adjust your strategy.  For example in the past Mum, my troll shaman, had a variety of summon spells like frogs, wolfs, great boars, but this game she has none and instead has one's like plague, fear, polymorph.  It really keeps the replayability very high.
