This one kind of came out of the blue, unless I have just missed it before...

you probably missed us talking about it elsewhere here...  I mean, Cap'n Darwin is only one of the designers/coders on it! ;D

Any links to more information on it?  Looks like it has some good potential...coming out anytime soon?

Grim,

We are still waiting to get bumped up in the Matrix queue to get an "official" coming soon announcement and new forum area. We are fielding questions on the sly down in the old FPG section of the forum at Matrix or I'll be happy to answer anything that shows up here as well. As soon as things get a bit more official I hope to do a preview article with LB to put up here.

Thanks.

I was anticipating the Middle East one.  Now what happened to that?
Title: Re: Flashpoint Campaigns: Red Storm - Where did this come from?

Simple answer is it had too big a scope for a two man team and certain game code functions were not working as we wanted. Red Storm is built off of a number of things we had started in ME. If RS sells well and there is still interest in the game we may pursue it again, but in smaller chunks.

So Red Storm is a limited interim game?  FPG port to the new game engine?

No. And no  A from the ground up new game. Based on what we learned from working the ME project.

Is it based on several different years of a Soviet attack or just on one year ie. 1975,1985 etc. or just 1985?

Two questions, if I might:

1.  MP options?

2.  MMP options, i.e., any chance of more than two players?

My thanks and best with the continued development.

Answer: The current scenarios and campaigns are set in 89 to mimic the original game, but I'm hoping we can get a number of other scenarios or variants in for other years. The Red Storm Module covers the 1980s (1979 to 1989) for equipment and formation data for US, UK, West Germany, and the Soviets. Work has already started getting data and art for an add on with Poland, East Germany, Netherlands, and Belgium. We would like to get a number of others in the game as well like Canada, France, Denmark, Sweden to name a few for the Red Storm Module. With the built in ability to make scenarios, and the ease of editing/creating data and other assets, I think there will be a good sized Community Source for new things.

Answer: The game can be played either side versus the AI, Hot Seat, PBEM, and PBEM++ via the Matrix servers at the moment. Number of players is 0 to 2. We may have to ponder the 2+ arena down the road. That would make for some interesting games if players held various HQ functions or nationalities.

I've been watching this and really, really want it.  The screenshots and discussion of the game have robbed me of any desire to fire up the original FPG.  I hope Matrix stops dragging their feet on this.  I'll buy this the instant it's available.

@Dredd,

Same here, but it did give us a major leg up in the game engine design. We will be able to leverage the FPC:RS code now if and when we head back into the Mid-East Theater. Also, nothing stopping a 3rd party effort to do some small ME style stuff with the new game.

Will there be an editor? Easily moddable? Middle East was a major plus for me...I love cold war but I love the ME conflict also.

Anyway, if it's easy enough to create scenarios then that may be a plus...but if it gave you a headache, I'm not sure what modders could do?
Title: Re: Flashpoint Campaigns: Red Storm - Where did this come from?
Post by: Capn Darwin on April 15, 2013, 03:25:42 PM
RS was built from the ground up to be a much more mod friendly game. Data is in spreadsheets. A good number of art and sound assets can be modified or replaced (or added to in some cases). In game scenario editor. In game campaign editor (linking a series of scenarios and setting up core forces, etc.). In game map values editing. Maps can be made using third party software and a paint program for sizing and scaling. We will have a modding guide to help the masses make stuff. We really want to have a thriving user generated content community this time.

We knock out scenarios for testing and such in a couple of minutes. Very easy to do. There are a number of ways to set the scenario up for different types of engagements. You can also go in an adjust certain values of units and even remove single squads or vehicles. There are setting for adjusting the training level, morale, ammo level, etc. Many, many, other things you can set, add or adjust.

Granted - and I get the "making it easy to mod" thing - it's cool and a definite good point.

I'm just disappointed ME was dropped (and I'm sure you and others involved were disappointed too when having to do so)...but my point was specifically about the Middle East.

If the developers can't make it - regardless how easy it is to create scenarios - how would modders be able to?

If all goes to plan, we should have our new forum later today in the "Coming Soon" section of the Matrix forums. I hope you all get a chance to stop in, check things out, ask a question or two or just take a look. Thanks!  8)

Not true.  There will be separate infantry counters in this game.  At least, that is what I have been led to understand.
Title: Re: Flashpoint Campaigns: Red Storm - Where did this come from?
Post by: RooksBailey on April 23, 2013, 09:00:22 PM
According to Capn Darwin:

QuoteInfantry come in two flavors. Discreet leg units of many subtypes and mechanized infantry units, again of various types, with various types of carriers (APCs and IFVs). Individual squads are tracked for combat loss as are the carrier vehicles. We will make more information available in the new forum when it goes live.

Been checking to see if the new Matrix forum is up yet because this does sound like it is going to be a great wargame.  Reminds me of a new TACOPS (I never played Flashpoint: Germany, would this be off the mark?).
Title: Re: Flashpoint Campaigns: Red Storm - Where did this come from?
Post by: Capn Darwin on April 23, 2013, 10:51:54 PM
magnus,

This initial release covers the 80s. The bulk of the scenarios and the campaigns with be 89 to match FPG's time period. We do plan on having other scenario in the time period and with the large number of maps and units and easy to mod formats I would think the User Generated Content will be aplenty.

Along with any support issues we will also be working on add on content for Red Storm. We want to get countries like Poland, East Germany, Canada, Belgium, Netherlands, to name a few in the game with more official maps and scenarios too.  8)

Good to hear that we will have pure leg troops. Though
the lack of it in the original game did not bother me at all.
Title: Re: Flashpoint Campaigns: Red Storm - Where did this come from?
Post by: Capn Darwin on April 24, 2013, 06:00:59 AM
Some folks really did not like the abstraction of the infantry as weapons that only work when "dismounted". I think we have a better combat model with the discreet squads this time around and the infantry units have a number of characteristics in a fight that make them much tougher to kill of in heavy terrain. You always need to have trade offs in a game based on the scale of the system too. At 500 meters per hex, squads are right at the level tracking. Another issue is having an AI that can work well with the mechanics you need.

Hey everyone - watch for some more / dedicated forum space for this as it gets closer to launch.  Since we're fortunate enough to have one of the designers here among us, we're going to take advantage of it and put him to work talking about it!  :)

Nefaro - Yes. We will be supporting Matrix's PBEM++ system.

Brant and Cyrano - One place is good right now and I am working on data, code and sfxs right now. If someone...cough...Brant. cough...had a real computer he could play and review the game for folks and do an AAR or two. Maybe LB can save the day.  ;D
